BRONZE MEDALIST PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2008 Melissa Rippon (c) 2008 Nikita Cuffe On behalf of the Water Polo Queensland(WPQ) Management Committee (Board), I wish 2008 Suzie Fraser you a warm welcome to the 2016-17 Annual General Meeting and presentation of the 2008 Kate Gynther WPQ Annual Report which will give members comprehensive information about the 2008 Amy Hetzel organisation’s activities and achievements during the reporting year. 2008 Bronwen Knox From the Board’s perspective, 2016-17 was one where the recommendations of the 2012 Kate Gynther (c) governance review continued to be implemented. The year began with the search for a 2012 Bronwen Knox CEO and, in consultation with Melanie Woosnam (Active8 Sport Solutions), the creation of 2012 Jane Moran a relevant strategic plan for the next funding cycle (2017-2019) and the preparation for the 2012 Melissa Rippon core business funding application through the Queensland State Government National 2012 Sophie Smith Parks, Sport and Racing Department for the next three years (2017-2019). 2012 Ashleigh Southern Robert Donaghue was appointed to the CEO role in August. He came with remarkable credentials, extensive experience in sport administration and an enthusiasm to drive the vision of the to uncharted levels of achievement with team and representative outcomes, participation and governance. Rob began with WPQ on12th September 2016 and already has achieved many of his goals of the role including the development of policies and procedures specifically for Water Polo Queensland.

The application for the NPSR funding was lodged on 15th September and WPQ was among the many successful sporting organisation applicants announced in November by the then Treasurer, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Sport, Curtis Pitt. At this time, on behalf of the water polo community of Queensland, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable and ongoing support and financial contribution from the Queensland Government to our sport, not only through the State Development Program but also through the Get Started, Get Playing, Get Going and Get Active programs.

In November 2016, after an extensive operational review in line with the strategic initiatives of the 2017-2019 Strategic Plan, new roles and responsibilities were created. We 9 welcomed Bronwen Knox to the role of Development Officer, Anica Bussell to Media and Communications, Isabella Andersson to Events Coordinator and a little later Mel Rippon to Development Pathways and Participation. Sadly we said goodbye to Joanna Main and Page No

Ashleigh McCall but Pam (McGarrigle) stayed on in her Administrator role to help transition ongoing support of these businesses and look forward to long and mutually beneficial the changes. Regionally, a full time Development Officer, was appointed in and relationships.

Water Polo Queensland now has an office at Sports House there. Last year, it was stated that “we are moving into a new and exciting era for water polo in In December, a bigger office space became available and so with the new cloud server, lap this state” and while there is still more to be done, I’m sure that what has been achieved tops, accounting system and updated furniture that created “office envy” at Sports House in the last twelve months must make the members feel positive about their participation Milton, WPQ moved to Suite 1.08. in the organisation and look forward to a successful and bright future for the sport in

The new year saw the planning, communication and implementation of new programs Queensland. I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their ongoing commitment - Regional Training Centres (RTC), State Team Program, Sporting Schools Water Polo and dedication to the vision of making Queensland the “home of water polo in ” Program. The RTC and State Team programs were new concepts that were produced in whilst portraying the Water Polo Queensland Values. consultation with the Athlete Development Director, QAS Coaches and HPM, DO and Development Pathways Manager. Given the short turn around from planning to delivery Sharyn Tucker stages, these were very successful undertakings shown by the very positive feedback from President the distributed surveys to all participants. These programs can only improve each year with longer selection and appointment processes along with more players and coaches already having shown an interest to be included.

The culmination of the State Team program was a Water Polo Queensland presence at the Youth Water Polo Festival. For the first time, all players, coaches, managers and support staff were given their State Team Uniform at a presentation where Wally Lewis was the guest speaker – he reflected on how proud he was to wear the Queensland Uniform and what an honour it is to be selected to represent your state. The “Queenslander, Queenslander” chant was heard more than once that evening. Another first for this campaign was the naming of Tour Captains – Mackenzie Grice, Sophie Milliken, Matt Lenarduzzi and Nick Porter lead by example and showed great sportsmanlike behaviour throughout the tournament. There were some excellent results in the pool but the best outcome was the camaraderie and team spirit that developed as all 180 “Team Queensland” members stayed together, played together and cheered together during the week long festival.

One of the responsibilities of the new CEO role was introduce and create new relationships with sponsors. As at the end of June 2017, Water Polo Queensland is supported by BLK

(uniforms), Hart Sport (equipment), Grill’d (Great Achievement Team meal vouchers), Sci 11 Fleet Toyota (motor vehicle), IPG (Printing), DELFINA (Togs), HAPPY BOY (Volunteer of Week

It’s also been a year of change as we implement the new 2017-19 Strategic Plan. One of the first changes many of you will have noticed is a refreshed website, a new office Robert Donaghue that celebrates our athletes and new WPQ team. We welcome three-time Olympians, CEO Mel Rippon and Bronwen Knox to the team, who bring invaluable knowledge and experience to their respective roles. Both athletes are fantastic ambassadors for our sport and are always a hit with aspiring young athletes during our Come and Try, Flippa Ball and Sporting Schools programmes.

To grow our sport, we need to take the sport to more communities across the state, which is why we have a Development Officer based in Townsville are starting to see the impact that Andrea is having on the region, whether it is a new club at Burdekin, Sporting Schools programmes in the Far North or assisting clubs with their Come and Try activities.

We are working hard with our regional associations to support the volunteers, athletes and officials who make the sport possible. We have conducted referee and coaching courses in Rockhampton and Mackay, as well as Come and Try programmes throughout the state. More than 170 athletes, coaches and support staff travelled to Sydney for the inaugural Sydney Water Polo Youth Festival, 1-7 July 2017. It was a great opportunity to take three age divisions away together on a five-day tour, not only to play against different teams but also to bond with their peers who they may not usually get the opportunity to meet.

The selection process began with benchmarking sessions that were open to all athletes. The sessions provided an opportunity for players to be seen by a variety of coaches and be tested across a range of swimming and water polo specific areas. The introduction of Regional Training Centres provided another opportunity for athletes to be seen and push for the selection.

Throughout the process athletes and parents were invited to information sessions where the process of training, squad selection, team selection and training for athletes who didn’t make the team were clearly outlined. The sessions provided parents with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their concerns with the WPQ team directly.

The selection process including narrowing down squads from those involved in the RTC program and then finalising the teams after squad training sessions, allowing athletes further opportunities to shine in front of their coaches. Throughout the selection process athletes and parents were notified via email, social media channels, Water Polo Queensland’s website and a specific State Teams portal.

The trip to Sydney was one of the largest tours organised by Water Polo Queensland and we wanted to establish a fresh culture and pride when playing for Queensland. Athletes were kitted out with unique State Team kit by BLK, new Delfina togs and caps, which they were allowed to keep after the tournament. 15 Page No
