PRESS RELEASE for Immediate Release PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA LAUNCHES MESSIAEN CELEBRATIONS a Major Festival to Celebrate the 100 Th Anniversary of the Composer’S Birth PRESS RELEASE For immediate release PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA LAUNCHES MESSIAEN CELEBRATIONS A major festival to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of the composer’s birth The Philharmonia Orchestra is mounting a significant celebration of the 1 00th Annive rsary of Messiaen’s birth (1908 -1992 ), from 4 February to 23 October . Esa -Pekka Salonen, who becomes Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor in September , conducts the first part in February with concerts in London, Basingstoke, Cardiff, Southend -on - Sea, Bari, Luxembourg, Parma and Palermo and featuring two iconic works : Messiaen’s Turangalîla -symphonie and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring . Both works are iconic pieces in Salonen’s own history; indeed Messiaen’s Turangal îla -symphonie was the piece th at inspired him to take up music. "I was about 11 and couldn't believe there was music like that… if that's what you could produce, I thought it must be the most fascinating thing on earth." The exploration of Messiaen’s work throughout the festival hig hlights the sheer range of the composer’s output from the chamber music ( Quatuor pour la fin du Temps ) to song cycles ( Poèmes pour Mi ), from works for solo piano and small ensemble ( Oiseaux exotiques ) to the two very gigantic but very different masterpiece s: Turangalîla -symphonie and La Transfiguration de Notre -Seigneur Jésus Christ. The Philharmonia is proud to bring together an array of performers who are not only the very finest exponents of Messiaen’s music, but who knew and admired him as a friend, tea cher or mentor : Pierre -Laurent Aimard, George Benjamin, Sylvain Cambreling, Roger Muraro, Cynthia Mill ar and Kent Nagano. The concert on 21 October brings together the music of two of his pupils – George Benjamin and Xenakis – with Messiaen’s own Chronochr omie and Ligeti’s Atmosphères . Other resources and events in the Series include recitals by the Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra, performing Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du Temps in Basingstoke , Southend -on -Sea and Worcester, pre -concert talks and a major web resource at www.philharmonia.co.uk/messiaen , online from February. The Orchestra’s concerts at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall form part of Southbank Centre’s major festival , From the Canyons to the Stars: The Music of Olivier Messiae n, celebrating Messiaen’s centenary year , in collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music and London Sinfonietta, with Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, London Oratory, St Paul’s Cathedral, Intermusica and Harrison Parrott. Pierre -Laurent Aimard, Festival Artistic Director, commented : “London has always been at the forefront in celebrating the music of Olivier Messiaen. Messiaen, measurer of time and craftsman in sound and colour, has influenced generations of composers. His spirituality, his love of nature, and the sheer boldness of his music communicate directly with audiences. This gentle dreamer with a collector’s soul worked independently of contemporary t rends – unclassifiable because, piece by piece, he constructed a truly unique language. It is my great wish that this festival, in homage to Messiaen, will illuminate the many aspects of this great original. ” David Whelton, Philharmonia Orchestra Managing Director , said : "This is one of the most important projects that the Philharmonia Orchestra has ever undertaken. The vision behind it, and driving force that has led to its rich fruition over more than seven years, is that of the Orchestra's President, Mr Vincent Meyer, who has also enabled it to take place through the generous support of the Meyer Foundation. We are extremely proud to bring some of Messiaen's colossal works, performed so rarely, to the stage in honour of Messiaen's centenary, and indebted to Vincent for his immense contribution to the Orchestra's artistic life." A full schedule of dates, repertoire and booking information for the Series is attached. More detailed information is available at www.philharmonia.co.uk/messiaen . • Messiaen's Influence on Post-War Serialism Thesis
3779 N8! RI. oIo MESSIAEN'S INFLUENCE ON POST-WAR SERIALISM THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC by Thomas R. Muncy, B.A. Denton, Texas August, 1984 Muncy, Thomas R., Messiaen's Influence on Post-'gar Serialism. Master of Music (Theory), August, 1984, 106 pp., 76 examples, biblio- graphy, 44 titles. The objective of this paper is to show how Olivier Messiaen's Mode de valeurs et d'intensites influenced the development of post- war serialism. Written at Darmstadt in 1949, Mode de valeurs is considered the first European work to organize systematically all the major musical parameters: pitch, duration, dynamics, articulation, and register. This work was a natural step in Messiaen's growth toward complete or nearly complete systemization of musical parameters, which he had begun working towards in earlier works such as Vingt regards sur 1'Enfant-Jesus (1944), Turangalila-symphonie (1946-8), and Cantyodjaya (1949), and which he continued to experiment with in later works such as Ile de Feu II (1951) and Livre d'orgue (1951). The degree of systematic control that Messiaen successfully applied to each of the musical parameters influenced two of the most prominent post-war serial composers, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, to further develop systematic procedures in their own works. This paper demonstrates the degree to which both Boulez' Structures Ia (1951) and Stockhausen's Kreuzspiel (1951) used Mode de valeurs as a model for the systematic organization of musical parameters. • The Cleveland Orchestra Mixes Strauss, Messiaen and Verdi (October 8 & 9) by Daniel Hathaway
The Cleveland Orchestra mixes Strauss, Messiaen and Verdi (October 8 & 9) by Daniel Hathaway The three programs scheduled by The Cleveland Orchestra last weekend were each colorful in their own right, but the blueprint of works being performed was complicated enough that the program book colorcoded each evening to keep patrons apprised about what they were hearing, and in what order. Come to think of it, the orchestra and stage crew probably appreciated those navigational aids as well. Thursday, October 8 was designated “Brown” and included Oliver Messiaen’s L’Ascension and Couleurs de la cité celeste, ending with Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathrustra. Friday, October 9 was “Yellow” and began with Oliver Messiaen’s Chronochromie. Messiaen’s Couleurs followed intermission, and the evening ended with the Stabat Mater and Te Deum from Giuseppi Verdi’s Four Sacred Pieces, featuring the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Saturday, October 10 was “Red,” beginning with Zarathrustra and continuing with Couleurs and Verdi. I heard all of the works in the course of the Thursday and Friday performances. Beyond whatever metaphysical connections could be drawn between these six works, the Orchestra is playing all of them on its European tour between October 15 and 31 (plus other works that have already appeared on its fall programs in Cleveland). As a famous choral guru once observed, one performance can be worth six rehearsals, and Severance Hall Audiences have already enjoyed a virtual trip to Brussels, Luxembourg, Milan, Paris, Cologne, Dortmund, Regensburg, and Vienna without boarding a plane. Earlier, Franz WelserMöst and the Orchestra opened the Blossom season on July 11 with a concert that included Messiaen’s L’Ascension, 4 méditations symphoniques.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is one of the most important composers of French keyboard music in the twentieth century. He composed numerous works in nearly every musical genre, many inspired by his Catholic faith. Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus (Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus) is a two-hour masterpiece for solo piano written in 1944, and is one of the most significant of his works. The piece is constructed by using three main themes: the Thème de Dieu (Theme of God), Thème de l’étoile et de la Croix (Theme of the Star and of the Cross), and Thème d’accords (Theme of Chords). The “Theme of God” is based on an F-sharp major chord with chromatic passing tones in the inner voice.

The series is intended to target an academic audience interested in the following areas: – Traditional fields of humanities whose research paths are focused on issues of current concern; – New fields of humanities emerged to meet the demands of societal changes; – Multi/Inter/Cross/Transdisciplinary dialogues between humanities and social and/or natural sciences; – Humanities “in disguise”, that is, those fields (currently belonging to other spheres), that remain rooted in a humanistic vision of the world; – Forms of investigations and reflections, in which the humanities monitor and critically assess their scientific status and social condition; – Forms of research animated by creative and innovative humanities-based

  • The Impossible Charm of Messiaen's Chronochromie
The Impossible Charm of Messiaen’s Chronochromie Messiaen Studies , Robert Sholl, editor (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2007) Amy Bauer Chronochromie occupies a seminal position in Messiaen’s œuvre, as both a culmination of the style oiseau from 1953 onwards, dominated by transcriptions of bird song, and as a template for the preoccupation with colour and rhythmic complexity that would mark his later music.1 At the behest of Heinrich Ströbel, Messiaen wrote Chronochromie on commission for the 1960 Donauschingen festival for full orchestra with no keyboards. It premiered to less than universal acclaim, as its riot of 21 simultaneous birdsongs in the penultimate movement was apparently more than the audience could bear.2 As the composer states in his extensive notes on the work, Chronochromie exploits the ‘power of impossibility’ latent in the colours of the full orchestra; the name stems from the integration of dense seven- and eight-note harmonies with a rhythmic scheme of symmetrical permutations based on 32 values in movements 2 and 4 (Strophes I and II).3 These symmetrical permutations, along with the singular harmonies most often called simply ‘colour’ chords in the scholarly literature,4 would appear later in Sept Haïkaï (1962), Couleurs de la Cité Céleste (1963), and Éclairs sur l’au delà… (1988-92). Yet it can be argued that, aside from Éclairs and St Francis’s ‘Sermon to the birds’ (Tableau Six of his opera St François d’Assise), Chronochromie represents the peak of composed and audible complexity in Messiaen’s music, for within it three compositional techniques are juxtaposed in their most arcane forms.
