    A TRIBUTE IN LOVING MEMORY Irina Diana Tarabac (1970-2007) Irina Diana Tarabac dedicated her life to learning, teaching, and science – the field of her choice being linguistics. Among many brilliant scholars and scientists in the Linguistics Department at Stony Brook University, Irina stood out for many a reasons. Unfortunately, Irina left us too early in October 2007. After arriving to study at Stony Brook at 2002, Irina became an active member of the linguistic community in the metropolitan area of New York. She frequently attended seminars in the Linguistics Departments of NYU and the CUNY Graduate Center. Irina was dedicated to life-long learning, and she set extremely high standards for herself, her own research and her teaching responsibilities. She taught a morphology seminar in Bucharest and served as a TA for classes on many different topics at Stony Brook, including syntax, morphology, language philosophy, phonology, typology, and Semitic languages. She was a wonderful teacher and was very concerned about her students. Her dedication to linguistics didn’t leave her much time to pursue her hobbies, but whenever Irina found some time off, she enjoyed listening to symphonic music, reading good literature, visiting museums, and spending time with her friends. Irina earned a Master’s degree in Bucharest, Romania in 1996 and had studied and conducted research in the Netherlands between 1997 and 1999. Irina conducted research on well-known languages such as Dutch, Romanian, and Modern Greek as well as less-known languages such as Rapanui and Burushaki. Irina’s passing is a great loss to her family, her friends and the field of linguistics.

Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure.

  • Mouse Model of Hepatitis B Virus Carrier
    The Journal of Immunology IL-12–Based Vaccination Therapy Reverses Liver-Induced Systemic Tolerance in a Mouse Model of Hepatitis B Virus Carrier Zhutian Zeng,* Xiaohui Kong,* Fenglei Li,* Haiming Wei,*,† Rui Sun,*,† and Zhigang Tian*,† Liver-induced systemic immune tolerance that occurs during chronic hepadnavirus infection is the biggest obstacle for effective viral clearance. Immunotherapeutic reversal of this tolerance is a promising strategy in the clinic but remains to be explored. In this study, using a hepatitis B virus (HBV)-carrier mouse model, we report that IL-12–based vaccination therapy can efficiently reverse systemic tolerance toward HBV. HBV-carrier mice lost responsiveness to hepatitis B surface Ag (HBsAg) vaccination, and IL-12 alone could not reverse this liver-induced immune tolerance. However, after IL-12–based vaccination therapy, the majority of treated mice became HBsAg2 in serum; hepatitis B core Ag was also undetectable in hepatocytes. HBV clearance was dependent on HBsAg vaccine-induced anti-HBV immunity. Further results showed that IL-12–based vaccination therapy strongly enhanced hepatic HBV-specific CD8+ T cell responses, including proliferation and IFN-g secretion. Systemic HBV-specific CD4+ T cell responses were also restored in HBV-carrier mice, leading to the arousal of HBsAg-specific follicular Th–germinal center B cell responses and anti–hepatitis B surface Ag Ab production. Recovery of HBsAg-specific responses also correlated with both reduced CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cell frequency and an enhanced capacity of effector T cells to overcome inhibition by regulatory T cells. In conclusion, IL-12–based vaccination therapy may reverse liver-induced immune tolerance toward HBV by restoring systemic HBV-specific CD4+ T cell responses, eliciting robust hepatic HBV-specific CD8+ T cell responses, and facilitating the generation of HBsAg-specific humoral immunity; thus, this therapy may become a viable approach to treating patients with chronic hepatitis B.
