The scientific correspondence of the Argentine botanist Lorenzo Raimundo Parodi (1895-1966) in- cludes 5280 letters interchanged between 1916 and 1966 with 1257 correspondents from 50 countries. Parodi’s correspondence is comparatively rich in copies of his own letters, and therefore it offers both an insight into his personal views and a record of the ways in which he communicated with an extensive network of relationships. The article first describes the structure and formation dynamics of the docu- mentary corpus, then analyzes in detail the thirty epistolary exchanges in which Parodi´s participation (as measured by the number of his own letters) was maximal. Also, a full index of the correspondence is added as an electronic supplement. In spite of Parodi’s various academic interests and of the consid- erable diversity of his partners, the correspondence unequivocally reflects that research on grasses was the axis that organized Parodi’s scientific life. The central position he occupied in Argentina’s botany during the first two thirds of the past century, along with his international reputation as agrostologist, makes his correspondence a repository of manuscripts by virtually every significant member of these two corporations that were active during Parodi´s life.

Abstract: August Weberbauer was a German botanist who worked for most of his life in Peru. Many species have been described based on specimens collected by him, which were mainly deposited in the Berlin herbarium (B). After the bombing of the Berlin herbarium during World War II, it was assumed that most of these types had been de- stroyed, duplicates rarely existed and neotypes had to be designated. However, during visits to Peruvian herbaria we rediscovered some overlooked duplicates of specimens of Clusiaceae. In the present paper, we designate lectotypes of ten names based on these Weberbauer collections and report additional duplicates found in the herbarium G.

In this chapter, we attempt to describe the major types of vegetation cover in this vast region as they occurred in pre- Columbian times and outline the conditions that support them. Examining the large-scale phytogeographic regions characterized by each major cover type (see Fig. I), we provide basic information on geology, geological history, topography, and climate; describe variants of physiognomy (vegetation structure) and geography; discuss transitions; and examine some floristic patterns and affinities within and among these regions.

All Rights Reserved Research Paper BIOSYSTEMATIC STUDIES IN THE GENUS ANAPHYLLUM SCHOTT (ARACEAE) OF WESTERN GHATS Dominic V J1* *Corresponding Author: Dominic V J, [email protected] Anaphyllum Schott. is a genus belonging to the family Araceae with two species—Anaphyllum beddomei Engl. and Anaphyllum wightii Schott. These are unexplored, endemic and threatened plant species in South Western Ghats striving for their existence with treasures of genes with medicinal importance. Two variants of Anaphyllum wightii are noticed in the Western Ghats region throughout Kerala at an altitude of 650 - 1000 meters. Anaphyllum beddomei is observed only at an altitude of 1200-1500 meters from the Agusthya peaks of the South Western Ghats. Tribal communities use these plants as food and as antidote to snake bite. Two morphologically different variants of A. wightii (1-large and 2-small) were noticed in the present study. Morphological and anatomical variations were studied in A. beddomei and in the two variants of A. wightii. The Histo-taxonomical and biochemical prospecting envisaged in the present investigation reveal the important properties of this unexplored endemic and threatened genus and can lay the foundation for the complete cataloguing and indexing of the targeted species. The ISSR molecular marker studies indicate that the two variants of A. wightii with different morphologies have difference in their genetic constitution also. • Tree Communities of White-Sand and Terra-Firme Forests of the Upper Rio Negro
Tree communities of white-sand and terra-firme forests of the upper Rio Negro Juliana STROPP1, Peter VAN DER SLEEN2, Paulo Apóstolo ASSUNÇÃO3, Adeilson Lopes da SILVA4, Hans TER STEEGE5 ABSTRACT The high tree diversity and vast extent of Amazonian forests challenge our understanding of how tree species abundance and composition varies across this region. Information about these parameters, usually obtained from tree inventories plots, is essential for revealing patterns of tree diversity. Numerous tree inventories plots have been established in Amazonia, yet, tree species composition and diversity of white-sand and terra-firme forests of the upper Rio Negro still remain poorly understood. Here, we present data from eight new one-hectare tree inventories plots established in the upper Rio Negro; four of which were located in white-sand forests and four in terra-firme forests. Overall, we registered 4703 trees ≥ 10 cm of diameter at breast height. These trees belong to 49 families, 215 genera, and 603 species. We found that tree communities of terra-firme and white-sand forests in the upper Rio Negro significantly differ from each other in their species composition. Tree communities of white-sand forests show a higher floristic similarity and lower diversity than those of terra-firme forests. We argue that mechanisms driving differences between tree communities of white-sand and terra-firme forests are related to habitat size, which ultimately influences large-scale and long-term evolutionary processes.
