Consolídanse neste volume as diferen- tes seccións que pouco a pouco se veñen abrindo camiño desde o primeiro número. Así dáse conta nun primeiro bloque das actividades da Academia Auriense-Mindo- niense de San Rosendo, da que é canle de expresión. Inclúense aquí as noticias rela- tivas á terceira sesión da Academia, celebrada en Celanova no derradeiro mes de Novembro, onde foron recibidos os novos académicos correspondentes; primeira vez que se crea esta figura que aparece contemplada nos nosos estatutos. miscelánea de arte e cultura A sección dedicada a publicación de artigos conta con media ducia de intere- rudesindus santes aportacións. Un novo artigo de D. Manuel Carriedo sobre as relacións da vella Gallaecia con Roma na Alta Idade Media. Unha interesante análise de Dna. Mercedes López-Mayán sobre un documento do alto medievo; trátase dun peni- tencial, compendio de doutrina e oracións para acadar o perdón dos pecados, que reflexa fielmente as características daquela sociedade. Un estudo de D. Carlos Adrán e D. Santiago F. Pardo de Cela encol da defensa da costa galega no século XVI, centrado no caso de Viveiro. D. Héctor Lago realiza un exame historiográfico sobre as elaboracións histórico-míticas creadas desde o Rexurdimento co obxectivo de definir a identidade galega. O estudo das peregrinacións, un dos temas especial- mente caros a esta revista, está representado nesta ocasión por un texto de D. Segundo L. Pérez López, no que desenvolve unha interesante reflexión, ás portas dun novo Ano Santo, do seu valor e sentido desde unha dobre perspectiva históri- ca e cristiá. Remata este feixe de colaboración cun relato dun dos novos académi- cos correspondentes, D. José Antonio Ocaña, no que o presente e o pasado quedan vencellados a través da figura de San Rosendo. O apartado dedicado a publicación de documentos conta nesta ocasión cunha interesante aportación da académica Mª Beatriz Vaquero, consistente en seis escri- turas de recibimento de bens polo mosteiro de Celanova a finais do século XV. 9 Domingo L. González Lopo Remata este volumen quinto de Rudesindus coa acostumada sección de recen- sións bibliográficas, asinadas nesta ocasión por D. Francisco Cantelar e D. Segundo L. Pérez. Con este novo número ten lugar un importante cambio, xa que de semestral, como viña sendo costume ata o de agora, a nosa revista pasa a ser anual. Unha Aca- demia como esta á que nos honramos en pertencer, precisa dunha canle de expre- sión que teña certa entidade -non só científica, que xa posúe, senón física-, para permitirnos acometer proxectos máis ambiciosos, como a organización de núme- ros monográficos sobre aspectos concretos, o que precisa máis vagar na súa elabo- ración que unha revista semestral. Por iso, a partir de agora, alongamos o prazo para chegar ás mans dos nosos lectores, ofrecéndolles en troques un volumen feito máis reflexivamente e con mellores cualidades para abrir e consolidar un espazo propio no campo editorial presente, no que a oferta aumenta día a día dun xeito imparable e impensable hai uns anos. Os membros do Consello de Redacción queremos reiterar o chamamento que xa fixemos en números anteriores de Rudesindus ós membros da Academia e ós subscritores da revista, para que nos envíen orixinais co resultado das súas investi- gacións, asegurando desta maneira o futuro da nosa publicación. De maneira especial vai dirixida esta invitación a aqueles novos licenciados e doutorandos, que encetan agora a súa experiencia investigadora; estas páxinas están o seu dispor nestes intres da súa vida en que non sempre é doado atopar unha canle de divul- gación para o seu traballo.     Finisterra, XXXIII, 65, 1998, pp. 117-128 SUBSTATE NATION-BUILDING AND GEOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF ‘THE OTHER’ IN GALICIA, SPAIN (1860-1936) JACOBO GARCÍA -ÁLVAREZ 1 Abstract: The ‘social construction’ of otherness and, broadly speaking, the ideological-political use of ‘external’ socio-spatial referents have become important topics in contemporary studies on territorial identities, nationalisms and nation-building processes, geography included. After some brief, introductory theoretical reflections, this paper examines the contribution of geographical discourses, arguments and images, sensu lato , in the definition of the external socio-spatial identity referents of Galician nationalism in Spain, during the period 1860-1936. In this discourse Castile was typically represented as ‘the other’ (the negative, opposition referent), against which Galician identity was mobilised, whereas Portugal, on the one hand, together with Ireland and the so-called ‘Atlantic-Celtic nationalities’, on the other hand, were positively constructed as integrative and emulation referents. Abstract: In recent decades Western Europe has seen a dramatic increase in the political activity of ethnic groups demanding special institutional provisions to preserve their distinct identity. This mobilization represents the relative failure of centuries of assimilationist policies among some of the oldest nation-states and an unexpected outcome for scholars of modernization and nation-building. In its wake, the phenomenon generated a significant scholarship attempting to account for this activity, much of which focused on differences in economic growth as the root cause of ethnic activism. However, some scholars find these models to be based on too short a timeframe for a rich understanding of the phenomenon or too narrowly focused on material interests at the expense of considering institutions, culture, and psychology. In response to this broader debate, this study explores fifteen ethnic groups in three countries (France, Spain, and the United Kingdom) over the last two centuries as well as factoring in changes in Western European thought and institutions more broadly, all in an attempt to build a richer understanding of ethnic mobilization.     Galicia, or the Spurious Child: Illegitimate Origins in the Modern Novel Danny M. BarretO Colgate University Abstract: The present article uses Suso de Toro’s Sete palabras as a starting point for ana- lyzing the protagonism of illegitimate children in the Galician novel since the Rexurdimen- to. Considered in a historical context and as a literary trope, the illegitimate child can be read as an expression of anxiety around a national identity rested upon a notion of purity, be it linguistic, ethnic or territorial. These unclear origins, rather than preclude the possi- bility of identity formation and history —individual or collective— can serve as a source for alternative histories and identities.     Thamyris/Intersecting No. 24 (2011) 111–132 Politics of Sound: Body, Emotion, and Sound in the Contemporary Galician Poetry Performance María do Cebreiro Rábade Villar The Middle Ages were considered to be the golden age of Galician literature. After this, literary production in Galician was for centuries predominantly oral. During the second half of the nineteenth century the cultural and political movement known as the Rexurdimento (Renaissance) led to a radical transformation of this situation. Authors such as Rosalía de Castro, Manuel Curros Enríquez, and Eduardo Pondal – the canonical trio of the Rexurdimento – began to forge a new linguistic and literary model. The recognition of Galicia as a political entity was fostered, in large part, by Romantic sensibilities towards oral and popular cultural traditions. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, several groups and poetic waves would follow – some of these notably influenced by the historic avant-garde. The generational suc- cession was severed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Like Basque and Catalan literatures, Galician culture also faced harsh repression during the reign of Franco and it was only with the arrival of democracy that something approaching cultural normality could be reestablished.1 In the 1980s the inclusion of the Galician language into the teaching system ushered in a new era for the Galician culture. From the 1980s, Galician poetry begins to move through new avenues such as poetry performance. The poetic discourse and generational controversy that find their precedents in the avant-garde run parallel to this. The clash between the “poets of the eighties” and the “poets of the nineties” has been much remarked upon, even though the most recent critical approaches tend to relativize the opposition between the two groups.2 This essay aims to explore what the commitment to orality of Galician poets and performers since the 1990s has meant for both Galicia’s poetry and the performance of poetry in general.

Contact: [email protected] José del Valle Ways of Seeing Language in Nineteenth-Century Galicia, Spain abstract: This article discusses a polemical encounter between two Spanish intellec- tuals – one Andalusian, Juan Valera, and one Galician, Manuel Murguía – who clashed on the desirability of cultivating Galician as a literary language. This encounter is framed as a language ideological debate and interpreted in the context of Spain’s late nineteenth- century politics of regional and national identity. The proposed reading does not so much attempt to assess the accuracy of Valera’s and Murguía’s views of Galician as to understand the terms in which they struggled to impose their particular way of seeing the region’s sociolinguistic configuration. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight (Berger 1972: 7). We only see what we look at. To look is an act of choice (ibid. 8). Soon after we can see, we are aware that we can also be seen.
