A Message from the State Deputy SK Toni Pascua

Dear Brother Knights,

(Ideas through being grateful for another day) State Deputy Today I will not talk about recruiting or otherwise on internal and external activities but to share insights relatable to our everyday lives.

Perspectives -Ever heard in this dictum? “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."- Unknown.

This is not a clause or merely a statement but a reminder to think outside of the box and step out of your comfort zone to building positivity in every step of the way.

Think of it that the only easy day was yesterday, it’s because nobody can ever predict what a future situation/circumstance holds and is yet to come. Use your faculty interventions and know your weapons well in this institution called university of life, where experience is the best teacher.

When we stumble and fall, we slowly get up, the only way to reach the peak is to retrace our steps in the midst of not stumbling from the boulders but the pebbles that block our path.

Yesterday is the eraser of mistakes and failures. Tomorrow, in essence is not promised, it’s a gift now that’s why it is called a present. To do and to be the best you can be for...It is a transparency of hope making the past a remembrance. For in life, there is always a sojourn, always a new beginning May the blessings be with you!

More points to consider:

We are a family- Knights of Unity, welcomed into One God, one faith, and one baptism.

To be happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections to positivity - can be achieved through: Communication Asking questions Never assume things Seeking the truth-it is always free To be perfect with imperfections -when we make mistakes -stand up to correct it and move

Volume 6, Issue 11 Page 2 Official Publication of the Nevada State Council November 2019

on Be positive and be upbeat Stay humble and be kind to others most of all have faith, believe -To God be the Glory!

Vivat Jesus!

Toni Pascua “Spearheading membership growth, One Knight at a Time.”

P.S. See you all soon at our forthcoming Mid Year Meeting at Tonopah, NV

State Chaplain’s Message Father Manny R. Guico

Dear Brother Knights:

Nevada State Chaplain

Greetings & Peace be with you!

On October 10th (Thursday), the 72nd Annual Clergy Appreciation Dinner was successfully hosted by K of C Council #2828 at Markich Hall with Our George Leo Thomas and a record of 35 Priests in attendance. This was so far the largest group of Priests who participated with total of 150 Brother Knights and their families. We had great fun and enjoyable evening. We will continue to hold this annual event next year with a specific DATE (October 15th, 2020 Thursday) in mind. We are also planning to hold the event in a much bigger venue (to be determined & announced). On behalf of Bishop Thomas and my brother-Priests, a sincere & heartfelt THANKS! MAHALO!

Kindly schedule & attend our "FIRST DAY of REFLECTIONS" which will take place on (Friday) December 6, 2019 from 2:00PM - 6:00PM . The THEME is: "KNIGHTS OF UNITY: one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism". We expect all State Officers, State Council Directors, District Deputies, & Grand Knights to attend our "MID-YEAR ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING" in Tonopah, Nevada at Stations Casino. I also encourage you to bring your spouses for this spiritual retreat.

As we celebrate All Saints Day (on November 1st, Friday) & All Souls Day (on November 2nd, Saturday), let us remember & pray for all our "Deceased Brother Knights", especially those who recently passed away. As the song goes: "We remember! We celebrate! We believe!". On November 28th (Thursday), we celebrate USA THANKSGIVING DAY. We've received so many blessings from God. Let's not forget to always be grateful and thankful to God. FYI - I celebrate my 49th Priestly Ordination Anniversary on this very day. This year (2019) my Ordination Date falls on Thanksgiving Day (very providential & timely). I was ordained by Saint Pope Paul VI on November 28, 1970 at Luneta (Rizal) Park, in Manila, Philippines. There were over 200 Priests ordained from many Southeast Asian countries (Mass Ordination). Presently only few of us are left in the priesthood serving the Church. Keep me in your prayers as I pray for you!

Vivat Jesus!

A Message from the State Membership SK Tom Villardi Director

Circle of Honor Goal Report

Brothers Knights, State Warden State Membership I wanted to share some fantastic news with you regarding our tremendous Director success in recruiting new members.

With the most recent end-of-the-month, Circle of Honor Goal Report, Nevada is ranked #1 in our Jurisdiction with an Intake Gain at 38.61% of quota. That’s quite an accomplishment and I want to thank all of the Grand Knights for their hard work in achieving this number. By the way, this puts us at #3 in the world behind Luzon South and Visayas.

Additionally, we are very close to reaching the elusive 6,000-member mark with about 150 to go.

Again, congrats to all the Grand Knights and Councils who helped us reach these amazing numbers.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the mid-year Convention in Tonopah.

A Message from the State Retention SK Raymond Troik Director

Retain & Fraternity

The past 2 months I’ve shared a couple concepts of Retention. There really isn’t a whole lot of concept in this area. The biggest I still believe centers on FRATERNITY. Fraternity is the Blood of the Knights of State Retention Director Columbus in my humble estimation. If you and I can establish a solid Fraternity in our councils then we won’t have a problem with Retention.

So, as of right now: NO MORE DROPS. From NOW til 1 July WE NEED TO WORK ON RETENTION. You, the Council, are the only ones who can do this. Yes, we want new members. But a big YES: we need to retain the OLD MEMBERS. State can’t do it and God knows I can’s do it. Only YOU! So my suggestion for the coming months. REACH OUT to the knights whom you haven’t seen. These are our brothers in Christ. They deserve and may NEED our friendship. Essentially we have 3 months to make this happen. Invite one of our brothers over for Thanksgiving. Invite them PERSONALLY to the Council Christmas Party. Of course invite them to attend a Council Meeting. Offer to bring them to the events of your council. Offer to bring them to Mass! Transportation and a Reminder may be WHAT THEY NEED. Even if we only get 5 former members to become active WE HAVE SUCCEEDED! YOU have Succeeded.

Retention is our vocation. Catholic Christian Men have joined the Knights of Columbus to make a difference. Only YOU can make this happen. Every member of the Council is an ambassador of the Council. The GK gives direction but it is the Individual Knights that share the Fraternity to make the Council Live. When we have a breakfast WE are having the breakfast. WE work together to make it happen. A member organizes; we effect! And it’s the same thing regarding Retention. WE need to reach out to our inactive BROTHERS. Emphasize in your mind: BROTHERS. WE ARE!

Happy Thanksgiving! See you in Tonopah!

State Historian Report and November SK J Michael Brady 2019 “Knight in the Light”

Worthy Grand Knights; please send me your completed Form 185, Council Officers information so, I can establish strategic contact for our Columbian Year 2019-2020. (some Grand Knights have responded, THANK YOU). Remember to include the name and contact information of your appointed Council Historian. State Historian Other updates are as follows:

1. I am continuing to work with the District Deputy’s and Grand Knight’s to appoint a respective Council Historian, for this new Columbian year and going forward. The Council Historian will assist the State Historian in reaching into the respective Council archives for access to the significant events or activities of the Council and Brother Knights. In some Councils this role will reside with the Grand Knight, due to size of Council membership. Please be prepared to discuss who is best suited for this position in your Council. As always, this is your chance to tell and record your Council’s continuing story! 2. In concert with our new Worthy State Deputy Toni F. Pascua and myself, we recommend Councils setting up a “cloud based” storage system for each Councils records, photos, activity accounting, etc. The continuity of record keeping can then be documented/updated over the continuing “Columbian Year” by the Council Historian. 3. To accomplish the infill of Past State Deputy’s Biographical information, from 2000 to the current Columbian year; I will continue to work with resources from Supreme and PSD Ray Gardea to collect and archive this information. As mentioned before, we have received Biographical information for a few PSD’s.

Please use my email address: [email protected] to assist in adding any historic documentation, as indicated above, to capture the Nevada State history of our Fraternal Order. I look forward to continuing to work with my Brothers. Make this new Columbian Year the best year ever for your respective Council and Assembly.

A Nevada Knights of Columbus History Fact:

Boulder City, Nevada – St. Andrews Parish

St. Andrews parish, Boulder City, owes its existence to the great Boulder Dam project. In 1931 a city was created by the Federal Government for the housing of workers at the dam. For a time during 1931 and 1932 the spiritual needs of the Catholics among them were taken

Volume 6, Issue 11 Page 18 Official Publication of the Nevada State Council November 2019 care of by the clergy of Las Vegas, Rev. C. E. Hogan residing there as assistant to Father O’Grady. In April, 1932, with the completion of the new St. Andrew’s church, Bishop Gorman erected Boulder City into a parish, with Father Hogan as its first pastor. St. Andrew’s church was the first new edifice to be erected for religious purposes in the Reno Diocese. Father Hogan was transferred to Winnemucca in October, 1933, and Rev. John J. Lambe, the present pastor, came from Elko to succeed him. Father O’Grady was transferred to Carson City in October 1933 and Rev. Patrick J. Connors of Sparks became pastor. Father Connors was named Domestic in 1935. He had, as his assistants, Rev. J. M. W. Sibon and Rev. Theodore Van Schie. During this period the Holy Family Sisters visited Boulder City several times a week to care for the religious instruction of the children.
