Chavez Ravine This is a review of Ry Cooder©s Album Chavez Ravine Ry Cooder is best known as the producer of the Buena Vista Social Club album, the man responsible for the international exposure of the group of brilliant though forgotten Cuban musicians at the heart of the album and the film. For the best part of the last 20 years he has earned his bread by writing music for films such as Paris, Texas, The Long Riders, Alamo Bay and many more. He hated the record and touring routine, giving up doing `solo' albums in 1988. Younger people may not be aware of his rich body of work which stretches back to the 1960s (see the link below for his discography.) His latest project ± Chavez Ravine ± is a much praised piece of work which tells the story of the destruction of a Los Angeles neighbourhood by use of a kind of musical collage. It combines music from the period with new material written by Cooder, his percussionist son Joachim, and Latino writers who hail from the area. Chavez Ravine took its name from Julian Chavez, one of the first LA county supervisors who bought the land in 1840. It was a ªself-sufficient and tight-knit community, a rare example of small town life in a large urban metropolis.º The area became a multicultural community: Mexican American, but with Chinese American, Russian and Jewish residents. In 1946 the City of LA Planning Commission developed a housing plan for supposedly ªblighted areasº such as Chavez Ravine. In 1950 the Housing Authority told the residents that their land would be purchased and used for public housing. -

He gained some critical attention for playing guitar with Captain Beefheart on Safe As Milk. In the late Pure Pleasure / 60’s and 70’s he became a vital session musician for prominent artists. This included Randy Speakers Corner Newman (12 Songs), The Rolling Stones (Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers) and Little Feat (“Willin’). The list is voluminous and includes John Lee Hooker, Maria Muldaur, Neil Young, Arlo Guthrie, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon and The Doobie Brothers among many others. He was part of the historic Jamming With Edward, joining Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Nicky Hopkins. Beginning with the 1970 film, Performance, Cooder worked on 18 film scores and notably collaborated on Buena Vista Social Club. His solo career has spanned five decades and consists of a wide variety of roots- based music in various formats. It certainly came as no surprise in 1978 that Ry Cooder would take an excursion into jazz. With a Cedille powerhouse, eclectic group of musicians, Ry Cooder – Jazz embraced vintage jazz and traditional music. -

Introduction This case study explores the evolution of "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live," originally recorded in 1929 by the Virginian composer-singer-fiddler Blind Alfred Reed. Suzy Rotolo (2008, p. 246), commenting on Phil Och's songs, notes that "they were journalistic, restricted to a specified subject or event. To write topical songs is risky because as time passes the songs lose their relevance: they have a built-in expiration date." To the degree that “How Can a Poor Man...” is a topical protest song, one might wonder why this song has survived beyond the Depression Era. -

The all-star celebration features music luminaries Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Ry Cooder, Brandi Carlile, Raul Malo, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty and more sharing the stage for one epic night to perform in honor of the newest class of inductees: Roy Orbison, Rosanne Cash and The Neville Brothers.
