Health Campaigns

21st March 2019

This year the theme is “leave no one behind”. Due to the negative attitudes and low expectations many people with Downs Syndrome are left behind. All people with Downs Syndrome should and must have the opportunity to live fulfilling lives and be included on an equal basis with others, in all aspects of society. There is a lack of understanding of the challenges individuals face across their lifetimes and a failure to support them with the opportunities and tools needed to live fulfilling lives. www.downs-syndrome.org.uk

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - March 2019 Ovarian Awareness

Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any Month - March 2019 signs or symptoms. But there are some things that may mean you're more likely to get prostate cancer. You might hear these described as risk factors. Even if you don't have any of the symptoms that we talk about below, speak to your GP about prostate cancer if:

Over 50 years old - Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50 and your risk increases with age

Family history and genes - You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has been diagnosed with it, compared to a man with no family history of prostate cancer.

Ethnicity - Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men.

What’s going on in your Community?

Cancer Champions - Early detection saves lives! Would you be able to spot the possible early signs of cancer in a friend or relative?

If so, would you know how to approach the subject or what to suggest? Why not attend a half day session and become a Cancer Champion.

Who can be a Cancer Champion?

Anyone can! You don’t need any qualifications or prior knowledge on cancer. We need anybody from age 18 years upwards, from all walks of life who want to make a difference. You never know who you might be able to help.

How can I become a Cancer Champion?

All you need to do is attend one of our free half day sessions, which are laid back and informal, run by people like you (i.e. not doctors or people who speak jargon). You will learn about the early signs and symptoms of cancer, how to approach the subject, and what advice to give someone who might need it.

Cancer Champion training will take place on Wednesday 6th February at 1.00pm - 4.30pm and Tuesday 5th March 9.30am - 12.30pm at the Learning Development Centre, Enderby Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincs, DN17 2JL To book a place on the course please email [email protected] or phone Emma on 07519 120809 or Sophie on 07519 120805.

Cold Weather During the winter months it is important to keep warm to keep well.

Home - This includes keeping your home warm, especially the rooms where you spend time such as your bedroom and living room. They should be kept at a temperature of 18- 21°C while you are in them. You can use a hot water bottle or electric blanket at night (but not at the same time). Eat Well - Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure that you have regular hot meals and drinks throughout the day. Stay Active- It is important to stay as active as you can throughout the day as this will keep your blood circulating and make you feel warmer. This can be getting up to get a hot drink regularly or doing some light housework. What ever you feel you can do will help. Wrap up warm - Both inside and outside it is important to wear layers. If you need to go outside wear shoes with good grip. If you have a respiratory or heart problem try to stay inside when the weather is cold. Neighbours/Concerns - If you are able to check on neighbours then please do. Make sure their homes are warm enough and they have enough food.

If you have any concerns about yourself or a neighbour then call 01724 297000 or call the Age UK Helpline on 0800 009966.
