  • Obituary Peter Payne 2017
Professor Peter Payne It is with great sadness that Council reports the death of our distinguished and long serving President, Professor Peter Payne. Peter died on 10 January 2017, aged 87 years. A well attended service of committal was held at Aberdeen Crematorium on 20 th January, allowing many friends and colleagues to offer their condolences to Enid and their son and daughter, Simon and Samantha. They each contributed moving and frequently amusing recollections of their father, sympathetically read by the minister, Deaconess Marion Stewart. Peter was a Londoner whose academic path took him to Nottingham University where, in 1951, he graduated in the new and minority discipline of Economic History. His mentor was Professor David Chambers, who then set Peter on his research for his PhD, gained in 1954, and later published in 1961 as Rubber and Railways in the Nineteenth Century; A Study of the Spencer Papers, 1853 – 1891 . He had begun as he was to continue in his career, his scholarship founded on expert analysis of business records, and demonstrating their significance in understanding wider issues of economic and social development. His successful PhD launched him into two years of research at Johns Hopkins, this producing in 1956 a fine detailed study of The Savings Bank of Baltimore, 1818 – 1866 co-authored with Lance Davis. This was a spectacular start to an academic career in the new and relatively small discipline of Economic History, but building it had to wait, as National Service drew Peter into two years in the Royal Army Educational Corps. There he had the unusual experience of serving for a time on the staff of a military detention barracks.

  • Memory for Emotional Faces in Major Depression 1
Memory for emotional faces in major depression 1 Running title: MEMORY FOR EMOTIONAL FACES IN MAJOR DEPRESSION Word Count: 4251 (excluding the abstract, references and tables) Memory for emotional faces in major depression following judgement of physical facial characteristics at encoding Nathan Ridout Aston University, Birmingham, UK Barbara Dritschel University of St Andrews, UK Keith Matthews and Maureen McVicar University of Dundee, UK Ian C. To this end, 16 psychiatric outpatients with MD and 18 healthy, never-depressed controls (HC) were presented with a series of emotional faces and were required to identify the gender of the individuals featured in the photographs. Participants were subsequently given a recognition memory test for these faces. At encoding, patients with MD exhibited a non-significant tendency towards slower gender identification (GI) times, relative to HC, for happy faces. However, the GI times of the two groups did not differ for sad or neutral faces. At memory testing, patients with MD did not exhibit the expected memory bias for sad faces.

  • Solent Vice-Chancellor Receives CBE from HM Queen Elizabeth II
Solent Vice-Chancellor receives CBE from HM Queen Elizabeth II Southampton Solent University Vice-Chancellor Professor Van Gore was awarded the honour of a Commander of Order of the British Empire (CBE) by HM Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle on Friday 7 March 2014. Professor Gore received his title for services to higher education. He helped to gain university status for Solent in 2005 and led the institution through its formative years to forge a new and distinctive kind of university. Professor Gore said: “It was a great honour to receive my award from Her Majesty and a real pleasure to meet the other recipients, two of whom, it turned out, had children who had recently graduated successfully from Solent University.” I was delighted to receive this award on behalf of everyone at Southampton Solent University. Their creativity, hard work and enthusiasm have played a huge part in the success of our institution.” The University has become known for its creative approach to the curriculum and, in particular, for its commitment to real world learning and a special student experience. Professor Gore has also been instrumental in forging a closer relationship with the city of Southampton, employers and the wider community. He is a member of Southampton Connect - a group of key public, private and voluntary organisation leaders, working collaboratively to further the growth and success of Southampton, and is also actively involved with the Local Economic Partnership for the Solent region. Always looking at building on the University’s success and investing for the future, Professor Gore is delighted with the progress on what will eventually be a stunning multi million pound development to transform Solent’s city centre campus.

!DRAFT ‐ DRAFT‐ DRAFT‐ DRAFT ‐ DRAFT ‐ DRAFT ! RVR1 – Devon and Cornwall, 31 January – 3 February 2010 CDG – Mike Osborne, Jean‐Marie Filloque, Chris Shepherd, Angelica Kaus LP – Caroline Chipperfield with Rebekah Southern Individuals Consulted: see appendix 1 Programme of meetings: see appendix 2 Executive Summary Regional Characteristics The characteristics of the region for the purposes of the PURE project have been highlighted in the regions RP. The project area is the Peninsula of Devon and Cornwall, two neighbouring counties in the South West of England with a combined population of 1,664,500, 1,135,000 in Devon and 529,500 in Cornwall. Both counties have a rural element, a strong maritime heritage, are tourist regions and important retirement locations. The Peninsula area embraces numerous heritage sites, national parks and some of the nation’s finest tourist sites, notably the internationally renowned Eden Project. Devon and Cornwall share significant common features and have similar challenges and ambitions. In terms of administration, Cornwall has a single unitary authority whilst Devon consists of a County Council with 8 local government districts and 2 separately administered Unitary Authorities. Both Devon and Cornwall are actively engaged with the South West Regional Development Authority (SWRDA) and the Government Office of the South West (GOSW). Whilst the area’s attractiveness as a rural location is a positive feature, its distance and remoteness from the rest of England creates logistical problems for businesses wishing
