2 FAllTe - Cm:haoiRicach liobRaid (\Rann ThiaR Cead mile failte to all Gaels to the 70th West Tipperary Senior Hurling Finar and a special welcome to our participating parishes, Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams and Eire 69 Annacarty Donohillto Clonoulty sportsfield. The West Final to me is a very special occasion and this year is unique with the clash of two great neighbours. Kickhams, a team that has achieved so much in both hurling and football in recent years, have many players with inter-county experience in both codes and also many players that have been the back-bone of the club for many years, so must start as favourites. Eire Og, a club that's on the up and up in recent years have many players that have given so much to our county also in both codes with a great blend of youth and experience they will be guaranteed to give their very best and have a great record in finals. May we have two winners - the best team and the game of hurling. Our curtain-raiser is very special because it brings our Senior and Juvenile Boards together for the John Kelly Soft Drinks Under 14 "A" Hurling Final between Gallee Rovers and Kickhams. This is sure to prepare us for the big one. We welcome our new sponsors lipperary Co-Op and thank you for your generous sponsorship and wish you continued success. We welcome also our referee, Paddy Russell and his officials, the most sought after team in the country at the moment. To our host club Clonoulty Rossmore I compliment you on a job well done. 4 West Senior Hurling Final Preview by Leonard Fitzgerald Today we witness the end of an era as the last Senior Hurling Championship before the millennium is about to unfold. At the beginning of the year, few would have predicted the OPPosition locked into battle at the final hurdle. KnockaviUa Kickhams and Eire 09 Annacarty are worthy representatives in a final which anticipates an hour full of gruelling competitiveness and physical exertion all through. On more than one occasion, the element of surprise has been the topic of conversation throughout this intriguing championship campaign. last year's divisional finalists Clonoulty Rossmore and Golden Kilfeacle were defeated in their respective 151 round matches with both sides failing to gain admission through the loser's section to a resurgent Cashel K.C. Cashel and Cappawhite exited at the semi-final stages with the Annacarty/Cappa episode probably the closest contest. Meanwhile, Kickham's road to the final was more routine with the bonus of a Donie O'Brien goal in the 1st round and the point scoring ability of John O'Brien in the semi-final, that diminished the Cashel resistance by two points on both occasions. 1991 was the last occasion that Clonoulty staged the West-final in which Cappawhite went down to the eventual Munster Club Champions, CasheL Now the seasonal pendulum rewinds itself towards another epic encounter. Coincidentally, two of Eire 6g's last three West titles were gained in Clonoulty in 1967 and 1981 respectively. This hunting ground could be a huge incentive for them and who's to say that they won't make it a threesomel Despite feeling the disapPOintment of losing their Senior status. Eire 6g returned with Intermediate honours in 1994. Last year they almost swept the board at underage level with the inclusion of a first ever underage County Minor Football title. Now 1999 has already shown a new approach and a craven hunger for success. Kildangan's Eamon Kelly has been the catalyst for this dramatic turnabout. himself a Junior All-Ireland medalist in 1989. John Quinn. Anthony Crosse and the Fox brothers were medal winners in 1986 and that Quartet possess the core of experience today With the expert !reetaking of Philip McLoughlin, the Kellys, the Heffernans and the youthful O'Sriens add a pleasant blend and variety 10 topple any defence. On the opposite side of the hurling spectre, Kickhams have no less than fifteen senior litle.s, the last accomplished in 1997 after a drought of 37 years. The majority of these players are established campaigners. Fergal Heaney, , John O'Brien, Vincent Kelly and Kevin Farrell have a passion to anain superiority at the highest level while John McCormack, Eoin Morrissey and Donie O'Brien show the tremendous talent at the Kickhams disposal. They are no strangers to the big day having contested four finals already in the 1990's. For them a win today would surely compensate for all the years of disappointment. FOI my prediction a close encounler with possibly the experienced Kickham!" I\J edge II, but a classic confrontation I'll hope for. 5 Best wishes to both Best wishes to Both teams from ... teams/rom . .. PHILIP T. 8 BORN! • • • • NOT MADE? by Seamus J. King

How often have we heard itl Sure, why shouldn" he be a Ime hurler when all belonging to him were soaked in the tradition althe game? Or, the opposite side of the same coin. Sure, what could you expect? There wasn't a hurler to be found on either side of the family! . I'm beginning to doubt this wisdom and the player who put me thinking was Sean 09 0 Hailpin. How could he possibly be a hurler? Sure his father was a Fermanagh man and his mother a native of Fiji, and he himself spenllen years of his lile in Fiji. Did you ever hear 01 a Fermanagh man or a Fijian getting on a hurling team? So, how come thai Sean 69 made it in hurling. and in football also for that matter? I believe the big culprit is environment and in his case II was the environment of North Monastery secondary school, where hurling was a second religion. There he lound an opportunity to express his natural athleticism through hurling. There are many such examples. Take the famous Bonnar brothers, all three 01 whom got AII·Star awards in hurting. Why should they have been hurlers when both parents came Irom Donegal and the lather played football With Gortahork? The answer is Simple they went to school In Cashel C.B.S. where Brother Noonan laught ew~ryone how to hurt and made a damn fine Iisl of it as well. And, staying in Cashel, another example are the O'Donoghue brothers. There's nothing In their pedigree which would suggest hurlers. What, with the father from Kerry and the mother from Meath. sure 'twas far from hurting Ihey were bred. But, they grew up in the environment of hurting and all five have given sterting hurling service to the Cashel King Cormacs, Most of us have heard of that greal school, Farrenferris, a great nursery of hurting. It may come as a surprise to learn that over half the boarders there come from west Cork, which is exclusively football country. They arrive in Farrenferris at the age of twelve years hardly knowing the shape 01 a hurley. And, what happens to them? They became great hurlers like Jim Young became, or Terry Kelly or , to name a few. Had they stayed at home hurling would have been the loser. There are other dramatic examples. 's lather was a footballer from Banlry. We know that Jack never lost that part of his inheritance and won a football AII·lreland in 1945. But that success was squeezed in among live hurting AII-Irelands, which I would hazard a guess, Jack would have never seen had his father not moved his tailoring talents out of the west 01 the county and Into Cork city. where the young Jack fell into the environment of hurling in North Monastery and was snapped up by Glen Rovers at the age of eleven years. And, what about the great Eddie Kehir. What would have become of him had his father remained in Roscommon. Would Eddie have made as skilful a Roscommon footballer as the skilful Kilkenny hurter he became? Of course, the reverse is also true. look althe fate of . Why should the son of a great hurler like Jackie Power become a great Kerry footballer. And, the answer has to be because he left the hurling environment of for the football world of Tralee and Kerry. So. the moral 01 the tale has to be, not to scolf at anyone's attempt to wield a caman because hiS father or mother or anybody else belonging to him, never caught a hurley in hiS hand. The environment's the important thing. I've said before that had Pierce Bonnar emigrated to some English Village, rather than migrating to Cashel, his sons would have become the best Cricketers In the area.

Eire 09'5 last West Final success was in 1986 - the Golden Jubilee of the club (1936) and the centenary of the formation of clubs in Anacarty and Donohill (1886). In 1888 Anacarty look part in the football championship, losing to Bohercrowe who went on to become County Champions. The first registered hurling club was organised in Donohill in 1910 and called Bohernagibbins. The club was aHiriated to the South Board and took part in the 1914 Junior Hurling championship. With the !ormation of the West Board in 1930 Donohlll joined with Cappawhlte and won the Junior Hurling championship. In 1934 Donohill Joined with Donaskeagh and called themselves Mutteen Rovers. The enforce ment of the parish rule in 1935 meant the end of Ihese combinations, so Anacarty and Donohill amalgamated in 1936 to become the Eire 6g of today, Success came at Minor hurling level in 1937,'38 &'39 while Joined with Cappawhlte and known as Brian Boru's, 1937 also saw Eire Og win !he Junior hurling championship, The big break-through came in the 1940's, with Eire Og winning four West Senior Hurling titles in a row· 1941,'42,'43 & '44 and going on to win the County Senior Hurling title in 1943, Eire 6g loslthe West Finals of 1945,'46 & '47, the latter two to Kickhams_ The 1950's was a restful period lor the club and Ihey did not come to prominence again until 1960, winning the West No.1 Junior Hurling championship, A combination of Eire Ogl Cappawhite known as SI. Vincent's won the 1961 West S.H. title. Eire Og won their 5th. West S.H. final in 1964, It being twenty years since their last.Three years later in 1967 Eire Og took the titie again. The ~event;es saw success in Minor hurling and county titles in Junior hurling, ul21 hurling (with Cappa) & Junior football. Two West S,H. titles came In the 1980's with victories over Cappawhite in 1981 and Golden in 1986. The onslaught of the nineties saw a decline in hurling fortunes but an increase in football successes - Co, Junior Football in 1993 and West Intermediate Football in 1997_ Having dropped to Intermediate standard in hurling Eire Og won the Co. IllIe in 1994 Success has been more prolific in underage activities in recent limes:

24 TIPPERARY STAR 1714/37 Was it a Goal or a Point? Curious incident at Cashel - a goal or a point extraordinary finish to J.H. semi-final

The 1936 county JH.C. semi·final tie between Clonmel's Sf. Mary's and Clonoulty the West champions attracted a fairly good muster to Cashel Gaelic field on last Sunday. Hall-time score Clonoulty 1-3, 51. Marys 2-2. Final score Clonoulty 3-5, Clonmel 4-2. The game proved very interesting with several scientific flashes and good striking predominating. Although play seemed to be ragged al times still it must be remem bered that al such an early stage in the new season learns are rarely to be seen at their best. In contrast the rather uneventful first moiety the second period supplied thrills in abundance especially during the last ten minutes when it looked as if SI. Mary's were going to run out pronounced winners. It was at this time that a clever tactical move was introduced to the Clonoulty forward line - James Brennan being brought from the 40 yards mark to the position of full forward. The change proved electric in the results for no sooner did the first ball reach him than Jim raised the green flag, a distinction which he earned a minute later when another beautiful cen tre came his way with a similar fate. These two vital scores had brought Clonoulty well in front of the opposing side. Again young Brennan was the marksman; slipping to tho right wing he got possession and then deftly dropped the leather over the crossbar. With about two minutes to go the West champions longed for more scores but this, strange to say. was responsible for an extraordinary change in their for tunes. Swarming into St. Mary's territory Clonoulty left but a few defenders to look after their own lines. like lightning the ball was sent down to Jack Ryan who slipped through a temporarily disorganised Clonoulty back line and with only the 90alman to beat drove in a hard shot from which the culbaire recoiled. Following a consultation between the umpires Mr. Sean Dwyer. chairman of the West Division Board and Mr. Robert Hall N.T. chairman of South Division Board the white flag was raised. Imme diately after the goal puck being delivered the long whistle was sounded signalling the end of the game. Then ensued a scene of confusion and excitement. Clonmel players and several of their supporters invaded the pitch in the vicimty of the Clonoulty goal where umpires and referee Mr. John Ryan. of Laffansbridge were in earnest conference and allegations were freely made that the umpires had erred in allowing a point instead of a goal. Though surrounded by expostulating players and spectators the referee refrained from giving his decision until he had had an oppor tunity of fully consulting with Messrs. O'Dwyer and Halt. Having done so Mr. Ryan subsequently awarded St. Mary's a goal. When maners had quietened down a rep resentative approached the referee who when asked what his decision was said il was his opinion Ihatlhe disputed score was a goal and so he ruled. On the refer ee's decision the match thus ended in a draw of fourteen points each. Clonoulty - Jas Kennedy, Jas Brennan, J. Byrne. T. Hammersley, M. Maher. W. Ferncombe, J. O'Brien, Tipp. BOARD MEETING 19/7/1935 The lollowing lixtures were made:· Senior Hurling final fixed for 25th August, Klckhams v. Donohill or Arravale Rovers. Referee: John Hennessy. The Senior hurling championship saw Donohill defeat Arravale 5-3 to 3·2. This match was refereed by C. McCarthy, Annacarty, who ordered Richard Heffernan to the sideline. In the West Final, Donohill played Kickhams. This was a ding dong game with some fIerce tackling and close marking and not as one·sided as the score indicates, 7-4 to 4- t.Kickhams being the winners. There was a healthy rivalry between the teams, as the previous year they had pfayed together as Multeen Rovers, but the parish rule forced Ihem to segregate. Barry was Ihe star of Ihe field, while olhers to do well were the Heffernan trio, the Hanlys, Ryan (Jem.) and Ayan (Whip). The Eire 6g team was selected from the following players:· D. Heffernan, J. Heffernan, A. Heffernan, M. Ayan, P. Hanly, T. Hanly. John Ryan. J. Ayan. D. Horgan, M. Doherty (goalie), T. Doherty, J. Hanly. D. Breen. J. Ryan (J), W. Barry. Kickhams team lor the 1936 West Final was probably the same as the 1936 team: Kickhams:· J. J. Lysaght (capt.), T. Crosse. W. Barry, T. Moloney, J. Hogan, M. Heffernan, J. Ayan (three), M. Morrissey, T. Ayan, T. Duggan, C. Crosse, P. Ayan, C. HICkey 1938:- The West Board records show Ihat Eire 6g affiliated In Junior hur1ing and Junior football, while Brian Borus affiliated in Minor hurling, They do not show a record 01 affiliation in Senior hurling but still Eire 6g played in the final against Kickhams. As Eire Og were the Juniorchampions 011937, it would seem obvious that they should have a Senior team in 1938. AI any rate the final is the only match chronicled. On the 13th November in extremely inclement wealher Kickhams beat Eire 6g 3-310 1-1. By half· lime Eire 6g had fai led to score. In fact they did everything but score on a number of attempts. Jimmy O'Donnell, the county Minor played In goals for Eire Og. All after-malch talk centred on the struggle between the centre·lield pair, Tom Ryan (Caslle) and Peler Browne. Tom Ryan (C) better known later as -Reilly· was described as "a useful slalwart 01 grit pluck and skill". The team was: D. Heffernan,P. Hanly, Jerry Ayan. (W), J. Ayan. C. Hanly, P. Dineen. D. Condon, 1. Ryan (C), J. Bergin. W. Bergin, A. Doherty, J. O'Donnell, P. Mulcahy, M. Hanly.

26 clash with Thurles Sarsfields and hopes are high that the West champions will contest this year's County final.

"Star" 9/11 /46 - County champions still looking like champions. Forwa rds tear through western defence in county semi-final. S.H.C. county semi-final Sarsfields 7-6 -Kickhams 1-4. Thurles Sarsfields were in slashing form against KnockavillaJDonaskeigh Kickhams in the semi-final of the County S.H.C. at Cashel on Sunday. Hurling with confidence they moved with the precision of a well-tuned machine and showed vast improvement on previous outings this year. At no stage of the game were the champions threatened. Wilh a cenlre field pull their lively set of forwards had no difficulty in piercing the Kickhams defence and the winners measure of superiority is fai rly indicated by the final score of 7-6 10 1-4. Sarslields now meet Carrick Swans in the final at Clonmel on Sunday Nov. 17th. Conditions were very bad. The heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday left the entrance to the field a passageway of mud and which the local committee did much to improve with loads of straw. On the pitch itself at each goalmouth there was an area over which backs and forwards slithered and skidded and otten when a player struck the ball he sent a shower of water and mud flying with it. A downpour of rain just before the match made matters worse as sideline spectators were naturally loathe to use the greasy seats so that stewards had difficulty in keeping them off the touch line. 11 is easy to visualise conditions in a chaotic state if the game had been a closer contest and if the crowd had been of bigger proportions. Fixtures are being allowed to run too lale in the year or rather a start is not being made early enough.

"Star" 23/8147 - Knockaville again West Champions S.H.C. Final Kickhams 5-3 - Ei re 6g 2-3. . At Golden on Sunday Knockavilla Kickhams defeated Eire Og in the West division S.H.C. by 5-3 to 2-3. Though Kickhams deserved their victory their superiority was not as convincing as the score might indicate. In retaining their championship title Knockavilla never lost their heads when they were pinned to their own lines for the greater part of the second half. The pace throughout was last and in the great heat it was a test fo r both teams. Play was only two minutes in progress when from a brief tussle in front of the Eire 6g goal P. Holmes put the leather in the net. Even play followed and again the ball was dri ven down to the Kickham forwards. This time Peter Browne was the sharpshooter and he gave the Eire 6g custodian no chance of saving. A brief attack by Eire 6g ended in Tom Joy shaking the net. The Kickhams had the belter of the play tor the rest of this moi ety, Peter Browne adding IW~ mor~ goals. Half lime score Kickhams 4-1 Eire 6g 1-1 . On Ihe resumption Eire Og delivered a sustained attack on the Klckhams posts, the raid being frustrated. P. Dwyer replied with a minor for Knockavilla .. From a sideline puck J. Ryan cut in a beauty which sailed all the way to the Kickhams net. The Anacarty boys at this period showed great dash. M. McCarthy put his side attacking and a clever pass ing movement ended in Peter Browne placing the issue safe for the Kickhams. In the dosing stages each side added two points and both teams were giving.ol their best when the long whistle sounded leaving the final scores Kickhams 5·3 Eire Og 2-3. Kickhams:- P. Cussen. T.
