A Dhaoine, Failte romhaibh go leir go dti Cluiche Ceannais lomaint TIobraid Arann Thuaidh anseo i bPairc Mhic Donnacha an Aonaigh. Failte fe leith roimh na foirne as an Tuaim Ui Mheara agus Burios Ui Luioch, agus na hoifigigh agus an reiteo!r. Ta sui I againn go mbeidh cluichi sportuil againn inniu. This year the Senior Hurling Championship was very competitive with many sporting games, culminating in today's final between old rivals Toomevara and Borris-lleigh. With both clubs having won the championship several times, it should lead to a cracking game and I wish both teams the very best of luck. Our curtain raiser today is the Intermediate Hurling final between neighbours and keen rivals Borrisokane and Shannon Rovers. This game could go either way and I wish both teams the best of luck. I would like to wish the best of luck to today's referees Tommy Ryan, who takes charge of the Senior decider and to Pat , who referees the Intermediate game. We are especially grateful to our championship sponsors Martin and Jane Morris of The Hibernian Inn for continuing their generous sponsorship of our Senior Championship while Dennis Quirke continues to sponsor our Intermediate Championship. We wish our sponsors well in their future business. We are grateful to ~ire 6g GM club for the use of their pitch which is always in excellent condition. Also a word of thanks to those who help in the running of the games in so many ways, to Secretary Gerard McKeogh, Treasurer Catherine Gleeson and her loyal group of gate checkers and programme sellers and anyone else who helps in any way. Thanks also to Liam Hogan for coming up trumps with another fine programme production and to the Order of Malta for their attendance at our games. Is mise Micheiil Mac Shlthlgh, Cathaoirleoch.

Bulochoi The compliation of Ihi5 programme would not bt> possible without the help of the following: Shane Brophy, Gerry Slevin, P. I. t was like cutting the twine on a catapult. five summers ago (Sunday, August 7 I 2005) Borris-lieigh unleashed Brendan Maher on the world. Then, as now, Borris-lieigh faced into a North TIpperary senior hurting final as slight underdogs, but on that occasion against Eire 6g Nenagh. Not many knew much about the 16·year-old Brendan at the time, but, by God, after that final they did - Borris-lieigh won 1-12 to 0-13 and Brendan Maher turned that final. Pucking around before the game the blond-haired Brendan Maher didn't look like an instrument of fate; he looked immature and unused; like a hand without calluses. But when experienced hurling men saw what he was capable of they knew then how a racehorse trainer feels when he sees something special on the gallops. What was it Belfast scout Bob Bishop wrote in a telegram to Matt Busby after he fixed his eyes on George Best all those years ago: "I have found you a genius~. Besides the 2005 north title Brendan Maher added another in 2007, but he is Brendan Moher, Borris-lieigh perhaps better known for his TIpperary exploits. He hurled for three years as a minor, simple to say whether he has the ability to winning two All-Ireland titles (2006 and do this or that, but only time will tell 2007), the second of which as captain. The county S.H.C. game between Borrisokane and Moycarkey/Sorris at Roscrea on Sunday provides us with our player of the week and he is one who needs no introduction to hurling enthusiasts everywhere. There were several in line for the award this week: Kilruane's Tom Moloughney and Paddy Williams, Tom McGarry and Mick Murphy from 80rrisokane, Ailbe Burke and Martin Guest from Shannon Rovers, and Joe Tynan, Roscrea, for the part he played in Tipp's win over limerick in the under 21 championship last Wednesday evening. However, taking everything into consideration, our vote goes to the holder of four AII·lreland medals, the greatest hurler Borrisokane has ever produced; a man who is now back on the county panel after a two years absence and looks like becoming Tipperary's full-forward for the Waterford game on Sunday week. Mackey McKenna scored 2-3 against Moycarkey last Sunday and not alone does he merit his recall to the Tipperary panel but also our mythical award of 'Player of the Week'.

Meet Shannon Rovers Captain, Derek Horan

This has been a wonderful year for Derek Horan. Just this month, he led Shannon Rovers to retain the Saint jude All-Ireland Sevens. Rovers defeated Padraig Pearses, Galway. Selected as captain with the club this season, he began his hurling year on a high when winning a Higher Education Division 3B League medal with Dundalk I.T. A qualified Agricultural Technician he went on to play at centre back with Louth hurlers and enjoyed a satisfactory season. Louth reached the Allianz National League Division 3 B final but lost to Wicklow at Parnell Park. In the Cup, Louth were well in the race but narrowly failed to make the knockout stages. Derek first played championship hurling with Rovers Intermediates in 2000. His medal collection is impressive, He led the club to a North U-21 C win in 2003. Two North Intermediate league medals arrived in 2004 and 2006 while in football, he won one junior B football, a junior A Football medals before collecting three North senior football medals with Thomas MacDonaghs. He en joyed his early career at midfield but has made wing back his own now, partnering Alan Byrne and Barry Cahalan.

That the champions could score but a point from play in the hour is indication enough of their performance, but it must not take from the approach of the Shannonsiders, who though entering the game as underdogs finished it in a blaze of glory and left no one in any doubt as to their right of ownership of the title for this year. Prior to Patrick McLoughney lining out in goals for Tipperary and winning a National Hurling League final of 1979, Sean Cahalan won two All-Ireland Intermediate medals with Tipperary in 1971 and '72. A sub with the 1971 winning side. The following year he lined out in goals as Tipp defeated Galway at Birr. This was a remarkable achievement because counties rarely win two-in-a-row at that grade as the Brocka man lined out with other well-known players like Jim Keogh and Michael Fitzgibbon both Silvermines, Noel Seymour, Ollie Killeen, Willie Moloney of Kildangan and and Jim Kehoe. Kehoe, from Kilsheelan, later collected a National League medal in 1979 alongside Patrick Mcloughney. Jim Keogh, Silvermines, was to become full back with Tipp seniors throughout the 'seventies and John Costigan lined out at right corner back in the 1968 senior final against Wexford. In his earlier years, Sean Cahalan played in the attack and scored three goals (Pat Foote scored three more) in the big intermediate win over Toomevara in 1967. One year later he made the goalkeeping position his own in the North final win over Kildangan and later against latten Cullen in the county decider. Having sampled senior grade in 1969, Rovers returned to intermediate the following year. They finished runners up to Kildangan in the 1971 final. Three years later Sean played in his next North final. This time it was at full back when he helped Rovers defeat Borrisokane and the following year he fulfilled the role once again to see off Ballinahinch.

Toomevara Juvenile Affairs

It must be said that Toomevara have a great record at Juvenile hurling sirn::e 1972 when the U-12, U- 14 and U-16 grades were formed. Their record speaks for itself.

North U-12 A Hurling 2 1 Toomevara 1975,1977,1980,1981, 1982,1983,1985,1986,1987,1988, 1989,1991,1992,1993, 1994,1995,1996,1997,1998,2000, 2006. U·14 A Hurling 13 Toomevara 1977, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1997,1998,2002,2007,2008. U·16 A Hurling 10 Toomevara '.'.'.~'.~'.~'.~'.~'.~'.~'.~ 2003

This year they completed at A level in every grade. Take the Toomevara U- 12 Hurling si de: They narrowly failed to reach the semi-linal. They had stiff opposition in Kilruane MacDonaghs, Roscrea, Moneygall and Nenagh eire Og. Th e U·14 Hurling side produced a great run. Mixing fortunes against Nenagh Eire Og, Newport/8allinahinch, Kilruane MacDonaghs, Roscrea and Ballina they reached the semi-final before losing to NewportiBallinahinch 2-7 to 2-6. At U-16 Hurling level - it has so far being a fantastic as the side remain unbeaten to date having overcome Kildangan, Roscrea, Kilruane MacDonaghs, lorrha and drew with Nenagh Eire 09. A semi final place is assured.

Recent Success 2008 There most recent success at divisional level was the U-14 A Hurling final win over Kilruane MacDonagh in 2008.

Toome retain Under 14 'A' title ..... said the Nenagh Guardian Toomeva ra 3-11 Kilruane MacDonaghs 2·7

The importance of a good goalkeeper was never more evident than in Templederry last Saturday as made a succession of saves to ensure that Toomevara retained their north title in defeating Kilruane MacDonaghs. Nolan made a succession of second half saves with one fantastic effort coming two minutes from time as Jack Peters bore down on goal. A goal for the challengers at the time would have reduced Toome's lead to the minimum at a time when Kilruane were well on top but were not as prolific in taking their scores like Toome were. An impressive scoring display from Padraig Hogan, helped Borrisokane to their seventh North Intermediate hurling tilte, when they defeated Templederry in a wet MacDonagh Park all of fourteen years ago. He scored 1 -9 over the hour and with Borrisokane having wind advantage in the first half, he had Borris 0-4 to 0-1 ahead afler twenty minutes. His brother Adrian, scored a point from a sideline cut to extend their lead and on twenty five minutes Pauraic Hogan scored a goal from a long distance free which deceived the Templederry defence. Borris led 1-9 to 0-' at half time and the expected Templederry comeback began to materialise with poinLS coming from John Collins and Seamus Kennedy. Martin Tooher was well positioned to get Borrisokane's first and only point from play. Templederry switched Michael Ryan to centre forward and Tommy Murray had a point which skimmed over the Borris crossbar. Templederry reduced the deficit to three points after liam Murray pointed a free, but with two minutes remaining, Pauraic Hogan sealed the issue with a free.
