Colours in Chumburung, Metaphoric Uses and Ideophones Are Also Investigated
RED IS A VERB: THE GRAMMAR OF COLOUR IN CHUMBURUNG Gillian F. Hansford Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation [email protected] Chumburung of Ghana was one of the languages included in Berlin and Kay’s seminal World Colour Survey. Their conclusion was that Chumburung had five and a half so called basic colour terms. This present paper looks specifically at the grammar of those colour terms, which was not one of the aspects recorded at the time. An alternative approach is suggested to that of colour per se. The secondary colours are also investigated, and it is shown how the division is made clear by the grammar. In an attempt to clarify what are the most basic colours in Chumburung, metaphoric uses and ideophones are also investigated. A brief look is taken at other languages of Ghana in an attempt at historical “reconstruction”. This research concludes that the WCS analysis of Chumburung needs to be corrected. Le Chumburung du Ghana est une des langues citées dans l’œuvre séminale de Berlin et Kay relative aux Termes des Couleurs dans le Monde. Selon cette étude, il y a cinq et demi de termes de base des couleurs en Chumburung. Le présent article met en exergue de manière spécifique la grammaire de ces termes de couleur, un aspect qui était resté occulté lors de l’enquête à ce sujet. Je propose une démarche alternative qui ne se limite pas aux seules couleurs. J’explore également les couleurs secondaires et je démontre comment la division est rendue plus claire par la grammaire. -

Initially, after the codification of German law in 1900, academic lectures were still based on a study of private law with reference to Roman law, the Pandectists and Germanic law as the basis for comparison. Since 1918, education in law focused only on national law while the legal-historical and comparative possibilities that were available to adapt the law were largely ignored. Students were unable to critically analyse the law or to resist the German socialist-nationalism system. They had no value system against which their own legal system could be tested.” Du Plessis W. 1 Paper Abstract What explains that in patriarchal societies it is the father who passes on his name to his child while in matriarchal societies the child bears the surname of his mother? The biological reality is the same in both cases: it is the woman who bears the child and gives birth to it. Thus the answer does not lie in biological differences but in cultural ones. So far in feminist literature the analysis relies on a patriarchal background. Not many attempts have been made to consider the way gender has been used in matriarchal societies. -

Generally our followers share the view that Muslims are not tolerant among themselves. What I mean is that we have different doctrinal groups as far as Islamic in Ghana is concerned. In more cases we realize that each group takes its views to be absolute and finds it difficult to listen to the other side and this manifested in intra- Islamic conflict as it was the case in the late 1990s --the case of conflict between the Ahl- Sunni (radical vs. conservative Sufi oriented Tijanniya) on minor issues that could have been resolved. -

Finding Faith: Ghana, the Netherlands, and my Year Abroad Elissa Vinnik I. Introduction Popular images of globalization stress its economic and political char- acter. However, as capital, people, goods, images, information, and ide- ologies spill across national borders, different cultures, religions, races, and social values are newly juxtaposed. As a result, there are currently thousands of Buddhists in Iowa and Pentecostal Christians in China. Islam now ranks as the second most common religion in Europe. Since September 11, 2001, Western media has given much attention to Islamic fundamentalism and clashes between Muslims and the West. Yet as a result of globalization, Christianity in both the developed and develop- ing worlds has also undergone significant changes. My months abroad in Ghana and the Netherlands have given me a unique opportunity to explore Christianity in both countries and to consider the effects of globalization on each. Drawing upon scholarly research and my own experiences, this essay will begin with a summary of the history and current practice of Christianity in Ghana, followed by a similar discus- sion of Christianity in the Netherlands. -

1 Hypotheses on the Diachronic Development of the Akan Language Group Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, Winneba [email protected] Cell: +233 244 732 172 Abstract Historical linguists have already established the constituent varieties of the Akan language group as well as their relationships with other languages. What remains to be done is to reconstruct the Proto- Akan forms and this is what this paper sets out to accomplish. One remarkable observation about language is that languages change through time. This is not to obscure the fact that it is at least conceivable that language could remain unchanged over time, as is the case with some other human institutions e.g. various taboos in some cultures or the value of smile as a nonverbal signal. Be that as it may, the mutually comprehensible varieties of the codes that constitute the Akan language group have evidently undergone some changes over the course of time. However, they lack adequate written material that can take us far back into the history of the Akan language to enable any diachronic or historical linguist to determine hypotheses on their development. Besides, if empirical data from the sister Kwa languages or from the other daughters of the Niger-Congo parent language were readily available, then the reconstruction of the Proto-Akan forms would be quite straightforward. But, unfortunately, these are also hard to come by, at least, for the moment. Nevertheless, to reconstruct a *proto-language, historical linguists have set up a number of methods, which include the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language universals and linguistic typology among others. -

(Head of Department) Signature Date ii Abstract The present 2012 Akuapem-Twi Bible had been the labour of several revision exercises from its existence as fragments of Bible books till the New Testament was completed and later the first full version published in 1871. Over the years the task of revision work had aimed at eliminating ambiguous phrases and words in the Akuapem-Twi Bible that are not translated in accordance with the thought pattern and worldview of the Akuapem people. However after the 2012 publication of the Akuapem-Twi Bible, there still exist a number of translation and exegetical problems in the translated text; clear examples are 1 Timothy 6:10a, 2 Timothy 1: 10b, 2:20b, Titus 1: 7, 11b which are in focus for this study.
