GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics. -

In 1989, with Do the Right Thing, he became the first African American to move decisively into the front rank of the film industry, while breaking new ground in his portrayal of the black community and creating a work that has since become a lasting testament to its time and place. Over a career that now spans three decades, he has gone on to make more than thirty films in every genre, including intimate family dramas, crime thrillers, historical epics, satires, musicals, and documentaries. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has produced more than 45 films since 1983. Mosley graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a double major in English and journalism in 1950. Mosley began working for the U.S. Postal Service. During the 1950s, while at the Postal Service, Mosley began writing freelance for The Pittsburgh Courier and for several other national publications. At this time, he also began making sculptures. In 1968, he had his first solo exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Art. He credits sculptors Constantin Bruncusi and Isamu Noguchi as his earliest influences. As this exploration is visual in nature the user is not burdened with unnecessary modelling and information seeking concerns in order to maintain flow and immersion. A balance between explicit and implicit modelling techniques needs to be maintained to ensure the user has a contiguous experience. -

The grant will enable Pitt researchers to use new imaging technologies to study TB to shorten and simplify its course of treatment, potentially improving survival and curtail- ing the global TB epidemic. “One of the most challenging issues in treating TB and stopping its spread is the length of time it takes to adequately stem the infection,” said JoAnne Flynn, princi- pal investigator of the grant and professor of microbiology and molecular genetics in the Pitt School of Medicine. “Current drugs are available, but we don’t fully understand how or why they work. He convincingly presents his evidence across ten chapters, which revolve around three aspects of black life in early to mid-twentieth- century Pittsburgh: sports, musicianship, andThe Pittsburgh Courier, the most zealous and widely subscribed newspaper of the black press. Readers should come away from the book with a sense of awe: Whitaker’s chronicle presents black Pittsburgh as a thriving, enthusiastic dynamo with energy that influenced the social and political milieus of the United States.
