Sedan dess har The Darkness haft fem låtor på topp- 10 på brittiska singellistan – bland annat ”I believe in a thing called love”, ”Love is only a feeling” och ”Christmas time (Don´t let the bells end”). Prior to the show the City of Fort Thomas is holding a Kentucky Derby Party beginning at 6:00 p.m., where folks can don their hats and watch the two-minute race at the Mess Hall (6:50), or watch by phone and hear the race and festivities live on their blanket while sipping mint-julips at the amphitheater in Tower Park. Creating the live studio sound heard on radios, phones or favorite recordings (45 rpm to mp3) is the experience that the KSO’s Boogie Band seeks to emulate each time it assembles its 19 musicians and 8 vocalists. Nostalgia is the sentiment that takes people of all ages back to a “happy place.” “Pop music is an amazing time travel vehicle, which takes everyone back to fond youthful years to recall the car they were driving, who they were dating, and what was happening at the time” says KSO music director James Cassidy, who started this KSO subsidiary group 21 years ago. BO DIDDLEY’S UNCONVENTIONAL 1950’s SOUND AND ITS ANTICIPATION OF HIP HOP OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How were Bo Diddley’s recordings an anomaly in relation to 1950s Pop music, and how is his rhythm-driven sound and self-presentation a precursor to Hip Hop style? OVERVIEW From his first appearance on the Billboard R&B chart in 1955 and continuing over his five- decade career, Bo Diddley has been celebrated for the rhythm-driven, percussive sound of his ensemble, at the center of which was Diddley’s guitar playing. If by the Rock era the guitar solo became a symbolic centerpiece in recordings and performances, Diddley’s emphasis was always on the rhythm guitar. His approach didn’t revolve around the single- and double-note leads that came to dominate the music. Instead, Bo Diddley pioneered a sound that involved every member of his combo playing with a percussive sensibility. Rhythm was emphasized over melody, with a vocal style that often approximated Rap set against that rhythmic backdrop. Earlier even than James Brown, Diddley inadvertently pointed to a Hip Hop future. His best-known rhythm guitar pattern (three strokes/rest/two strokes, or “shave and a haircut, two bits”) influenced many. The “Bo Diddley beat,” as it came to be known, appeared on records by Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2, rapper B.o.B., and many others. The Nashville Jazz Workshop (NJW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching people’s lives through jazz education and performance. For 20 years the NJW has delivered world class performances and music education to Nashville audiences and jazz fans around the country and the world. 2020 has been a challenging year for cultural institutions everywhere as they seek to fulfill their missions and remain financially viable. Fortunately, the internet has enabled the NJW to continue serving audiences and students – over 20,000 people have subscribed to the NJW’s YouTube channel to view live and archived performances and hundreds have enrolled in virtual classes since social distancing restrictions began in March. Jazzmania is the NJW’s annual jazz party and fundraiser. As a live event it has been “the jazz party of the year” and one of the city’s most engaging and fun charity events. As with other charity events, the event is moving online this year as a virtual event. On October 24, 2020 the Workshop will host Jazzmania as an online jazz party and evening of world class jazz performances. We will share our love of jazz, celebrate the Workshop’s 20th anniversary and ask our devoted fans to open their hearts and wallets to support the Workshop. The streaming event will also be targeted to a global audience, to build awareness of the NJW and engagement with jazz fans around the world. The two-part series is an expansion of an article written for Performance Practice Encyclopedia. Summary of Part One In Part One, the author first attempted to show the various types of trumpets, cornets, and flugelhorns, both natural and chromaticized, that existed before the advent of valves, together with their literature. Before there were valved trumpets, for example, natural trumpets, etc., were made chromatic by the technique of hand-stopping or by being fitted with slides or keys. He then showed how the first valved brass instruments—in particular trumpets, and to a lesser extent, comets—were accepted into musical circles. Introduction to Part Two In Part Two, it is the author's aim to raise the flag on a forgotten figure in brass history— one who was reponsible not only for the development ofboth the Vienna valve and the rotary valve, but also for the creation of the first solo compositions for the newly invented valved trumpet: Josef Kail (1795-1871), the first professor of valved trumpet at the Prague Conservatory (served 1826-1867). For this reason, the central part of this study will be devoted to works hitherto unknown, written for the trumpet (and to a lesser extent the cornet, flugelhom, horn, and trombone) during his time.
