Premiering a work is always a very exciting moment in the life of an artist. Tonight is particularly exciting for me because, for the first time in my life, I am part of the creation of a new work by Steve Stucky, whom I consider to be among the greatest artistic souls of our time. I feel so lucky to have him as one of my mentors. It is a great honor to mark the completion of this year’s Music Alive residency, in which Steve has so generously shared his multiple talents with a new work based on the beautiful words of one of our own Berkeley artists, Czesaw Miosz. Noah Stewart, a tenor who is another familiar voice in the Bay Area (he was an Adler Fellow), will be the voice of the stars, the roses and happiness. I have always been fascinated by the music of Bruckner, namely by its connection to life and how the composer was able to portray his deep spirituality through music. So I am looking forward to sharing with you tonight what is so difficult to describe in words—Bruckner’s “Romantic” Symphony No. 4. I must thank you once again for trusting us and supporting our vision. I am most thankful and truly humbled by your example. I leave you with great music and my best wishes. Joana Carneiro March 28, 2013 5 6 March 28, 2013 Message from the Executive Director Greetings from Berkeley Symphony On behalf of Berkeley Symphony, I want to personally thank you for your support and welcome you to the final performance of our photo by Marshall Berman 2012-13 Season. As our audiences continue to grow each year, it is gratifying to see so many familiar faces mixed in with our new friends. For those of you who may not have had the pleasure of hearing tonight’s soloist in a live performance, we are thrilled to be introducing the superb young tenor Noah Stewart. As a former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow, Noah has become an international sensation, capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide. We are pleased to be presenting Noah on tonight’s program as soloist in Steven Stucky’s world premiere of The Stars and the Roses. It has been an honor and a pleasure to have Steven Stucky as our Music Alive composer-in-residence this season and to have commissioned tonight’s world premiere. Not only is Steven a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, he is a dedicated educator and a genuine humanitarian. We are truly grateful to Steven for his involvement with Berkeley Symphony. I am particularly excited to be able to share with you this evening a sneak peak at our 2013-14 season, still hot off the presses. Watch your mailboxes and inboxes in the weeks ahead for all the season details. I look forward to seeing you again in the fall when Berkeley Symphony continues on its “defiantly original” path to present musical experiences that engage the mind and delight the senses.
