The Darkness.Glamrockarna från Norfolk som startade 2000 och gav ut debutalbumet ”Permission to Land” sommaren 2003. Det har sålt i över fyra miljoner exemplar i Storbritannien och blev naturligtvis albumetta. Sedan dess har The Darkness haft fem låtor på topp- 10 på brittiska singellistan – bland annat ”I believe in a thing called love”, ”Love is only a feeling” och ”Christmas time (Don´t let the bells end”). Splittrade 2006 och återförenade 2011 till glädje för bland andra publiken på Isle of Wight och Getaway Rock och för skivpubliken när tredje studioalbumet ”Hot Cakes” landade i augusti 2012. Det var efter det skivsläppet man var support act till Lady Gaga på hennes världturné. - En kanonbokning som gör PIP 2013 till en ännu häftigare festival, konstaterar arrangören Niclas Lagerstam. Inspirationen hos The Darkness kommer från band som AC/DC, Van Halen och Aerosmith men man har byggt på sitt musikaliska uttryck med udda instrument som säckpipa och panflöjt och med olika syntar. - The Darkness har liknats vid Thin Lizzy för sitt gitarrspel och vid Queen för sin sång, berättar Niclas Lagerstam. I helgen kunde Putte i Parken presentera kanadensiska Propagandhi, finska French Films och danska Bottled in England efter att tidigare haft klart med brittiska Iamx och Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats. - Nu förstärker vi den internationella profilen på sommarens festival med en riktig klassbokning, säger Niclas Lagerstam. - Är det konstigt att vi ser fram emot 3-6 juli och Putte i Parken i Mariebergsskogen….

CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.
