Opel Rekord P2 Set Standards in the Mid-Size Class
With a range of different versions, the Opel Rekord P2 set standards in the mid-size class. Russelsheim. One car, four variants. No other model line in the mid-size class at the start of the 60’s was as diverse as the Opel Rekord P2 launched in 1960. Alongside two and four-door sedans, Opel, a pioneer in the field of station wagons since 1953, also offered Caravan (station wagon) and delivery van versions and, from 1961, for the first time a coupé bodystyle. With optional “luxury“ appointments for the sedan and the coupé powered by a 44 kW/60 hp, 1.7-liter S-engine, Opel was aiming at new customer target groups who valued comfort and sportiness in this vehicle segment. Sales success proved the company right: with 786,411 vehicles (including 32,026 delivery vans) produced between 1960 and 1963, the Opel Rekord P2 became the biggest-selling car in the mid-size class. For a time it also occupied the number two position in the German car registration charts. Rekord P2 – “A car just as you like it” About 200 journalists from daily newspapers, trade journals, radio, television and weekly news round- ups attended the premiere of the new Opel Rekord at Rüsselsheim’s civic center in August 1960. Compared with its popular predecessor, the Olympia Rekord P1 produced from 1957 to mid1960, the new Rekord P2 had a fashionable trapezoidal shape and was also more restrained in the lines of the body. (The ‘P’ designation stood for the most important styling feature of both model series, the panorama windshield). -

La nouvelle vedette Opel de la catégorie compacte s’est vue distinguer lors de la cérémonie des Oscars de l’industrie automobile à Berlin mardi soir, et a remporté le « Volant d’Or » de sa catégorie. Un prix important qui récompense une Astra surdouée, qui n’est pourtant visible en concession que depuis le week-end dernier. Le Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann, CEO d’Opel Group et Tina Müller, Chief Marketing Officer étaient présents à la cérémonie de remise des prix qui se déroulait à la Axel-Springer-Haus. Ils ont reçu le prix des mains des rédacteurs en chef Marion Horn (Bild am Sonntag) et Bernd Wieland (Auto Bild). Le « Volant d’Or » est décerné conjointement par les deux publications. C’est un jury composé de lecteurs, de spécialistes et de people comme le célèbre pilote Walter Röhrl, qui désigne les nouveautés les plus significatives de l’année après des essais intensifs. « Le prix le plus convoité est attribué à la meilleure Opel nous ayons jamais construite ! C’est aussi la voiture la plus importante au sein de notre gamme. Opel peut être très fier de ce « Volant d’Or ». -

The “Missing Opel Book” Perhaps the best Opel books in terms of page count and value, are the "Portfolio" paperbacks that include original drive tests and other coverage drawn from numerous magazine articles published many years ago. Portions of those were re-printed in older Opel Club issues, but contrary to an impression that may have been given, they do not contain all there is to know! Recently a news article appeared about unpublished original auto magazine notes, photos, and other materials, which were being made available for public inspection at a university archive. This brought back memories in particular of Opel-related coverage from Road and Track magazine, with a focus on the peak US-export Opel era of 1968-1975. Unfortunately, inquiries to the archive revealed that no Opel-related materials apparently survived to make it through processing by staff for this special collection. This compounds an apparent slight by existing publishers, who compiled R&T articles for numerous other makes, but apparently did not find their Opel coverage worthy of a book edition! What we did get, was some brief internal correspondence concerning advertising rates in the early 1970's, combined with a analysis of overlaps of editorial coverage with ads (for several product manufacturers, including Opel). The actual documents were heavily restricted from use, per terms that are commonly applied to vintage materials by archives nowadays.
