Yobe State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report No. 16: 5th October 2018 Yobe State Ministry of Health Highlights: ñ 17 new cases were reported on 5th October 2018 from 4 LGAs (Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu and Fune) ñ 0 death was reported. Epidemiological Summary: The total number of suspected cholera cases reported in Yobe state is 1,405 with 61 associated deaths (CFR 4.3%). In the state, up to 426 cases have been reported in Gulani LGA (affecting 10 wards), 400 cases in Gujba LGA (affected 8 wards) and 344 cases in Damaturu LGA (affecting 11 wards). In Fune LGA, 168 cases were reported (from 9 wards) and 67 cases were reported in Potiskum LGA (from 10 wards). Out of 60 samples collected and tested using cholera RDTs, 47 (78%) were positive and 13 (22%) were negative. Again, 9 (47%) out of 19 samples cultured were positive for Vibrio Cholerae. However, the 9 positive samples were taken to national reference laboratory for quality checks and further analysis samples and Vibrio Cholerae O1 (Inaba) serotype was isolated in 4 out of the 9 samples. Five (5) of the new cases were reported from Gujba, representing 50% decrease in number of cases reported the previous day from Gujba (Fig. 6). No case was reported from Gulani (Fig. 4), Six (6) cases were reported from Damaturu (Fig. 10) and Fune LGA (Fig. 8). Response Activities Surveillance: ñ Continue line listing of new suspected cases from 4 LGAs (Fune, Gujba, Damaturu, Gulani) ñ WHO supported EHAs conducted house-house active case search and sensitization in affected and at-risk households in various LGAs. ñ EHAs identified 5 suspected cases during house-to-house search in the LGAs and referred them all to CTUs/ORPs in the respective LGAs ñ Priority areas have been identified and communicated to WASH and risk communication teams to scale-up interventions. 4 Case Management: Gulani Gujba Damaturu Fune Potiskum Total Admissions New admissions 0 5 6 6 0 17 New Discharges 0 10 4 14 0 28 On admission 0 5 9 2 0 16 ñ SMOH deployed six (6) trained health workers to support ORPs in Ngurbuwa and Wagir PHCs in Gujba LGA ñ No suspected cholera case has been reported in Potiskum LGA since 24th September 2018 ñ No mortality was reported in all affected LGAs. Risk Communication: ñ UNICEF deployed one (1) Toyota Hilux vehicle to provide logistical support and improve accessibility to remote communities of Gujba and Gulani LGAs ñ UNICEF-supported VCMs sensitized 1628 persons on hygiene promotion in Nayi-nawa and Pawari settlements of Damaturu LGA ñ Airing of radio jingles on health seeking behavior and cholera prevention by Yobe Broadcasting Corporation continued ñ Community volunteers working with VCMs sensitized 1281 persons on health and hygiene promotion in Shamka, Jajere and Kollere settlements of Fune LGA WASH: ñ UNICEF supported Environment Health Assistants have collected water samples and chlorinated 6 water points in Gujba, Sola and Buni-Yadi settlments of Gujba LGA. ñ WHO supported Environmental Health Assistants has distributed 1250 aquatab to household in Damaturu-Ganye Uku, Fune-shamka, and Gulani-Maikomo settelements ñ ACF-International sensitized 912 people in Mutai and Buni-Yadi settlements on hygiene promotion and cholera prevention during nutrition and food distribution programme ñ WASH and IRC teams distributed 1017 Aqutabs in affected households in Gwange, Pompomari and Kasaisa areas of Damaturu LGA. Coordination: ñ LGA RRTs in Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu and Fune LGA conducted daily local coordination meetings, and provided updates to state RRT to mobilize additional resources and technical support ñ State and WASH sector partners have mobilized LGA teams and local partners, and segmented affected communities in Fune, Gujba and Gulani to scale-up WASH interventions in areas with accessibility challenges; difficult terrain and poor communication networks. 5 .
