The director is Professor Stephen D. Hopper, who succeeded Professor Sir Pe- ter Crane. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is also the name of the organisation that runs Kew Gardens and Wakehurst Place gardens in Sussex. It is an internationally important bo- tanical research and education institution with 700 staff and an income of £56 million for the year ended 31 March 2008, as well as a visitor attraction receiving almost 2 million visits in that year. The gardens are a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Created in 1759, the gardens celebrated their 250th an- niversary in 2009. The Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is responsible for the world‘s largest collection of living plants. The organisation employs more than 650 scientists and other staff. The living collections include more than 30,000 different kinds of plants, while the herba- rium, which is the largest in the world, has over 7 million preserved plant specimens. The li- brary contains more than 750,000 volumes, and the illustrations collection contains more than 175,000 prints and drawings of plants. The Kew site includes four Grade I listed buildings and 36 Grade II listed structures in an internationally significant landscape. Kew Gardens originated in the exotic garden at Kew Park formed by Lord Capel of Tewkesbury.

Within the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), the Gardens, Research and Education directorates all work together on the programme. Our aim is to strengthen our capacity to help threatened biodiversity by further developing collaboration between these directorates and to extend this to the other SANBI gardens. Other partners and players include Cape Nature, South African National Parks, Table Mountain Park, conservation bodies run by the city of Cape Town, Working for Wetlands, Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, the Botanical Society of South Africa, the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership (MSBP), local area friends groups, horticultural clubs, private specialist nurseries and certain interested landowners. The Kirstenbosch Gardens Threatened Species Programme originally tried to build up extensive ex situ living collections of threatened plant species, but found this to be too difficult. The main problem was a lack of both nursery space and horticulturists to manage the large number of threatened species. We could only keep a few pots of any particular species and this was not representative of the gene pool for that species. Many of the fynbos species are difficult to to grow, are disease prone and short-lived.

Kew’s long involvement with conservation is made possible through its collections, the knowledge gained from the study of these and its historic and continuingly dynamic collaboration overseas in some of the most biodiverse regions of the world. To meet increasing scientific and societal concern about habitat loss, erosion of plant diversity and climate change, there is an ever expanding demand for the information that Kew can produce, such as: • identification and distribution of species • levels of threat to species • assessment and monitoring of threatened habitats and plant diversity hotspots • the effects of trade on threatened species • legislation on biological diversity and implementation; • ex situ conservation, reintroduction of species and restoration of habitats • species survival in on-site reserves • public education and raising awareness about the importance of plant conservation and sustainable use • capacity building with others to better conserve biodiversity. Kew has ~ 650 staff, including scientists and horticulturalists with ~ 500 affiliated researchers, students and volunteers. There are two sites, Kew Gardens, a World Heritage site by the River Thames in West London; and Wakehurst Place in the High Weald in West Sussex. RBG Kew holds 19 major collections – a unique global resource for studying plant diversity.
