You have been given a sacred trust to help children learn how to keep their baptismal covenants and strengthen their testimonies. As each girl prepares to become a young woman and each boy prepares to become a young man and receive the priesthood, you can be an important influence for good in their lives. In 1831, shortly after the Church was organized, the Savior taught that teachers “shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon” (D&C 42:12), which were the only scriptures available then. Today teachers have the responsibility to teach the sacred truths from all the standard works, including the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price, to help children develop faith in God and in his Son, Jesus Christ. Courses of Study All children who are ages eight through eleven on 1 January are to be taught from the Primary 4, 5, 6, and 7 manuals. Only one course of study is used each year for all children of this age-group. Over a four-year period the children will study each of the standard works. Primary 4 is based on the Book of Mormon; Primary 5 on Church History, the Doctrine and Covenants, and Joseph Smith— History in the Pearl of Great Price; Primary 6 on the Old Testament and the books of Moses and Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price; and Primary 7 on the New Testament. Classes should be organized according to local needs and the number of children ages eight through eleven. However your class is arranged, you need to make sure each child receives adequate attention. When children turn twelve years old, they begin attending Young Women or Aaronic Priesthood meeting during sharing time. However, they continue to attend their Primary class during Sunday School time until the next 1 January, when they begin attending Sunday School. A special lesson, “The Priesthood Can Bless Our Lives,” is included in this manual. This lesson is to be used by teachers of eleven-year-old children as the boys prepare to become deacons and the girls advance to Young Women. Teach this lesson before the first child in your class turns twelve. Pray for the Lord’s guidance as you prepare and present the lesson so that the children will understand what the priesthood is, how it can bless their lives, and how they can fulfill their responsibilities to honor the priesthood. Teaching with This Manual This course of study centers on teachings from the Old Testament and from the books of Moses and Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price. As you discuss these scripture accounts, the children should better understand the importance of the covenants the Lord made with his people and in turn the importance of the v covenants we make with the Lord. They will also understand that Jesus Christ is the God of the Old Testament. They should learn how to apply the teachings of the Old Testament to their own lives and gain a stronger desire to keep the commandments of Jesus Christ. Encourage the children to read at home the selected passages from the Old Testament and the Pearl of Great Price given in the “Suggested Home Reading” section at the end of each lesson. By doing this, the children will learn how Jesus Christ was foreordained to be the Savior of the world and how he directed and inspired the Old Testament prophets. As the children read the accounts of the people who lived on the earth before the birth of Jesus Christ, they will learn to follow those who set righteous examples. These lessons will strengthen the class members’ testimonies, help prepare them to give service in the Church throughout their lives, and help them gain strength to resist temptations in today’s world. Preparing Yourself To fulfill your sacred calling to teach children, you should be prepared both to Teach mentally and spiritually. Part of this preparation is understanding and having a testimony of the principles you teach. The Savior, the greatest teacher of all, taught us how to prepare to teach his gospel to others: • Humbly seek the Spirit through prayer. The Lord has said, “Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers” (D&C 112:10). If we are humble we will be blessed to know how the Lord wants us to teach his children. • Study the scriptures and the words of the latter-day prophets (published in Church magazines). There is great power in learning and pondering the words of the Lord. He commanded us, “First seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men” (D&C 11:21). A latter-day prophet, President Ezra Taft Benson, has reaffirmed our need to learn the words of the Lord: “I urge you to recommit yourselves to a study of the scriptures. Immerse yourselves in them daily so you will have the power of the Spirit to attend you in your callings” (Ensign, May 1986, p. 82). • Keep your covenants. Your ability to be guided by the Spirit depends on your faithfulness in keeping the covenants you have made with Heavenly Father. You will also be setting a good example when you “observe the covenants . to do them” (D&C 42:13). When children see your love for the Savior and commitment to living the gospel, they will be more motivated to follow him. • Search for ways to help the children feel the Savior’s love. Tell them often how much you love them, and acknowledge their worth and potential. Your love and kindness will help the children understand the love Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for them. It will also help them learn to love others. Preparing Your This manual will help you organize lessons that focus on the scriptures. The Lessons lessons use accounts and references from the Old Testament and from the books of Moses and Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price. Each lesson focuses on one gospel principle and teaches the children how to apply that principle in their lives. The main purpose of all the lessons is to help the children develop testimonies of the divinity of God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, and of the divine mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. vi It is not intended that you should use every question and activity in the lesson. Teach according to the ability of your class, remembering that the class mem- bers’ understanding is more important than covering all the material in a lesson. When your lessons are well prepared and interesting, the children will be more motivated to participate and learn. As you prepare and teach by the Spirit, you will help the children increase their testimonies of the truthfulness of the restored gospel.     Chapter 16 Leaving Mormonism Amorette Hinderaker 1 Introduction In March 2017, a counter-organisational website made national headlines after its release of internal documents belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (henceforth lds) drew legal threats from the Church. Mor- monLeaks, a WikiLeaks inspired website launched in December 2016, released internal Church documents including financial records and memos that were largely ignored by Church officials. It was the March posting of a Power Point presentation detailing “issues and concerns leading people away from the gospel” (www.mormonleaks.io), however, that raised Church ire. Following a take-down order, the document was removed for a few days before being re- stored with an attorney’s letter. In the meanwhile, several media outlets had al- ready captured and published the content. Both the content and the Church’s protection of the document suggest an organisational concern over member retention. With 16.1 million members worldwide (Statistical Report 2017), the lds, whose followers are commonly referred to as Mormons, is a rapidly growing faith and the only uniquely American religion to gain global acceptance. Like many faiths, the Church is concerned with new member conversion. In addi- tion to children born into the faith each year, the church baptises nearly 250,000 new converts through their active missionary system (Statistical Report 2017). But, as new converts join, a number of the formerly faithful leave. The Pew Forum (2015) reports that Americans, particularly young adults, are leaving churches in record numbers, with a third of millennials reporting that they are religiously unaffiliated.

    Mr. Peay's Horses: The Federal Response to Mormon Polygamy, 1854 - 1887 Mary K. Campbellt I. INTRODUCTION Mr. Peay was a family man. From a legal standpoint, he was also a man with a problem. The 1872 Edmunds Act had recently criminalized bigamy, polygamy, and unlawful cohabitation,1 leaving Mr. Peay in a bind. Peay had married his first wife in 1860, his second wife in 1862, and his third wife in 1867.2 He had sired numerous children by each of these women, all of whom bore his last name.3 Although Mr. Peay provided a home for each wife and her children, the Peays worked the family farm communally, often taking their meals together on the compound.4 How could Mr. Peay abide by the Act without abandoning the women and children whom he had promised to support? Hedging his bets, Mr. Peay moved in exclusively with his first wife. 5 Under the assumption that "cohabitation" required living together, he ceased to spend the night with his other families, although he continued to care for them. 6 After a jury convicted him of unlawful cohabitation in 1887,7 he argued his assumption to the Utah Supreme Court. As defense counsel asserted, "the gist of the offense is to 'ostensibly' live with [more than one woman.]' ' 8 In Mr. Peay's view, he no longer lived with his plural wives. The court emphatically rejected this interpretation of "cohabitation," declaring that "[a]ny more preposterous idea could not well be conceived."9 The use of the word "ostensibly" appeared to irritate the court.

    Mormon Samplers: Teaching Traditional Values by Jessie L. Embry Associate Director, Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Brigham Young University In 1961 when I was nine years old, I made a small cross stitch "sampler" with the motto “I will bring the light of the gospel into my home” in Primary, the organization for children ages 3 to 12 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon or LDS). At the time I did not realize that I was following a centuries-old Anglo and American pattern. Since the sixteenth century, girls had been making samplers, mostly in neighborhood schools. Their first project--a sampler--taught them basic stitches. Their second--also a sampler--showcased their skills and served as a model for future projects. The LDS Church encouraged girls to make samplers as one way to preserve the Victorian ideals of women's roles in the twentieth century. John Palsgrove's 1530 French grammar for English use defines a sampler as "an exemplar for a woman to work by." 1 It taught girls skills needed to create the endless supply of fine stitching that would be required of her during her tenure as wife and mother of a home, or if not married, as a skill to create an income. Almost all common household linen items had to be marked for identification and were so highly valued that they frequently appeared in probate records and wills of the time. Since few pattern books existed, the samplers were the only way to keep track of the stitches learned in youth and expected to be used throughout a woman’s life.
