Mr P. Adams

Hello again, It was wonderful to see so many parents and pupils at our annual carol concert, especially as last year‟s had to be cancelled due to the weather. It is a real credit on our Performing Arts Department to have organised such a fabulous service. A special thanks also to All Saints Church, Baschurch, for allowing us the use of the church and supporting the event. While talking about Performing Arts, I hope that you were able to see our magnificent production of Les Misérables. Congratulations to all involved, we really do have some very talented pupils. It was a real pleasure to welcome back the class of 2018 to their Celebration Evening. The certificates and prizes were presented by Malcolm Farrar, Road Safety Officer, Council. Malcolm is a very good friend to the school and much loved by the pupils. The pupils should be rightly proud of themselves for achieving such magnificent results and pushing themselves to make such great progress during their time at . The CFA Christmas Bingo was, as usual, a great success. To those who donated prizes I relay my thanks; it raised over £600.00. The CFA contributes a lot to support the school and we are very grateful to them. They are hoping to organise a “quiz” or “race night” in the Easter term along with Easter Bingo There has, yet again, been a lot going on with our sports teams and there are more details inside. I was disappointed that more money for education has not been found by the government in the budget. This situation cannot go on and we need politicians to support our education system with proper and adequate funding. As I am sure you know by now I have made the decision to retire in August, at the end of the school year, until then it‟s business as usual. The governors will be starting the appointment process for my successor early in the New Year. I shall write some reflections on my 10 years at the Corbet in the July newsletter. Please find enclosed a timely reminder of the Emergency Procedures. Finally, may I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This has been a very long term and I‟m sure all members of our school community are looking forward to the Christmas break. Pupils return to school on Tuesday 8th January 2019.

Governors

I should like to thank Sam Doubleday who has retired from the governing body due to work commitments and to welcome two new parent governors, Lisa Cork and James Staniforth. The governors have been sorry to receive the headmaster‟s resignation and decision to retire. Mr. Adams has led a happy and successful school for the past ten years during which it has sustained its position as one of the top secondary schools in Shropshire. Indeed this year it is at the very top!

The refurbished Science labs are now in operation and governors would like to thank all those who had any part in helping to raise the necessary funds for such a major achievement. They should also like to congratulate the school on a most impressive performance of Les Miserables. It has been a busy and productive term! Merry Christmas!

Maths Young Leaders On Tuesday 4th December the maths young leaders taught year 6 pupils from our local primary schools various maths topics. The experience was festive and enjoyable because of the special activities that we had spent many weeks preparing. Having the opportunity to plan activities and then teach them has helped our self-confidence and public speaking skills. This day brought our young leaders course to a close after months of commitment to the qualification. The course has helped us to improve our organisational skills, developed our communication skills for younger audiences (and definitely tested our patience skills).

We are glad that we have had this opportunity and we all would strongly recommend this experience to other students in the future.

Young Leaders this year: Charlotte Tench, Siân Roberts, Ashleigh Hayward, Martha Creaser-Ogden, Neve Hayward, Erin Marmaras, Macie Smith, Ceri O‟Hagan, Emma Bartlett, Florence Wright, Evie Allen, Hannah Redding and Lauren Badger.

Year 11 GCSE Maths in Action Trip

At 9am in the morning. We set off on a long trip to Salford University in Greater Manchester to take part in an exciting day called „Maths in Action‟.

To begin with we welcomed to the stage was Cerys Bradley who was there to introduce the first speaker, Colin Wright, a very talented mathematician who had a random skill in juggling. He went though how patterns are involved in maths day to day and was very interesting.

Then, Cerys introduced herself as she was there to lecture us on Tor, statistics and the dark web. After this we given a very humorous talk on exam practise by Paul Harrison who seemed to incorporate Twitter into his lecture. After a break, a lady called Sabine Hauert introduced us to swarm modelling and Nano medicine. She was interactive to the audience and made a confusing subject extremely fascinating.

In the final lecture before lunch we had a last minute addition to the day, a lecturer from the University of Salford who came to the stage and talked about how maths is involved in rigging sports, which was a topic that most of us probably did not comprehend fully before the day.

Finally, a maths magician named Matt Pritchard arrived and performed some great magic that was accompanied by a bit of maths.

The day was very informative.

Thank you to Miss Evans and Mr Goodall for a great day.

Corbet Alumni Staying connected with The Corbet School

Corbet school wants to keep in touch with students after they leave school.

The Corbet School has been a big part of your life, but even once you have left, the school can still provide opportunities to learn new skills and maybe get the job you want. If you stay in touch perhaps you can coach one of the sports teams, help set up community events, hear about career opportunities or maybe help set up a school reunion. Think about where you want to be in five years time and about the things you plan to do, would not it be great to come back and talk to Corbet students about all the amazing things you have achieved. It will help them see what’s possible and how they can achieve it too. So why not sign up to the Corbet's network today and we will keep you connected with the school after you leave. You will receive emails to keep you in the know.

You can keep in touch either by: Follow the Corbet Alumni Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/TheCorbetSchoolAlumni Or email [email protected] If you are still unsure and would like more information, please pop in to see Miss Kear (Office situated in the Maths block).

Year 8 Sport Leaders - Primary Schools Partnership

The start of the year has been very busy with Cross Country, Tag –rugby , High 5 Netball and Sportshall Athletics being held at The Corbet School for local feeder Primary schools.

The year 8 sports leaders have helped the events run smoothly and officiated the events. The winners of these events qualified for the North Shropshire qualifiers as part of the county school games.

The Cross Country league has been held over 4 weeks, with 8 Primary schools attending and over 130 runners at each event. Well done to the year 8 sports leaders who helped the event run very successfully despite the wintry conditions. They have carried out a variety of roles from marshalls to hares, to finish line officials and have shown fantastic support and encouragement to all runners.

In the Sports Hall Athletics, seven Primary Schools and over 100 boys and girls took part in running and field events. Winners of the girls event was St. Andrew‟s Primary School, Nesscliffe and the winner of the boys event was St. John‟s Primary School, Ruyton.

The Year 8 Sports leaders measured jumping and throwing events and recorded results accurately which helped in the smooth running of the event. Well done to all the Year 8 sports leaders who have shown excellent commitment and energy in helping to organise and run the events. Without the sports leaders, these events would not be so successful!

Sporting News & Results Rugby

Year 10 V Haberdashers Adams Corbet were drawn to play against Haberdashers Adams (was Adams ) in the second round of the Under 15s National competition. Unfortunately, Corbet had quite a few players unavailable and suffered some injuries during the match. In addition to this, Adams are always a difficult opposition to play against and this fixture was no different. They ran in some very well worked trys and defended extremely well. Despite this, the Corbet boys did themselves proud, tackling courageously and putting in maximum effort in attack, even managing to score twice against Adams. The final result was Corbet 12 – Haberdashers Adams 63.

Year 11 V This was another friendly match, arranged to give the boys from both schools more experience and game time together. Thomas Adams played very well in patches, tackled some very strong running Corbet players bravely, and managed to score a try in each half of the game. However, Corbet took the experiences they had learned from the previous game and performed extremely well throughout. Corbet‟s discipline was fantastic, and some excellent trys were scored. The final result was Corbet 53 – Thomas Adams 14.

The event was well attended with over 100 competitors racing throughout the evening. The pupils all enjoyed themselves with some of them skiing on the artificial slope for the first time.
