Posted at www.williamwhitepapers.com Learning from other Movements: Gay Liberation and Recovery Advocacy Tom Hill and William White1 Introduction For participants of the current recovery advocacy movement, there is much to learn from previous social movements. Lessons of considerable import can be gleaned from the movements that intersected in the 1960s, including the civil rights movement, the black power movement, the new left and anti-war movements, the women’s movement, and the gay liberation movement. While all of these are worthy of study, the gay liberation movement holds certain parallels, strategies, and lessons that may be of particular interest. This is due in large part to the societal myths and misunderstandings of both people who have experienced addiction and those with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. The stigma attached to these groups has often rendered them expendable and, as a result, has forced them into hiding their experiences and identities. Members of the gay community, most prominently Bayard Rustin, played critical roles in the civil rights movement and later drew upon the lessons of the civil rights movement in the same way that members of the recovery advocacy movement are now drawing upon their experience within earlier social movements. Because the societal stigma and discrimination targeting these two groups have been so severe, they share similarities in the early stages of building a movement of social justice and change. The gay liberation movement – now inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) lives and identities – currently has 45 years of organizing and movement-building experience compared to the new recovery advocacy movement that emerged in the late 1990s and was formally organized at the 2001 recovery summit in St.

    Coming Out Gay, Coming Out Christian: The Beginnings of GLBT Christianity in San Diego, 1970-1979 Joshua Grace, Christopher Rhamey Megan Dukett, Kaylin Gill, Ricky Bell Winner of the James S. Copley Library Award Can a person be a practicing homosexual and a Christian at the same time? Before the late 1960s, the integration of these seemingly contradictory terms was uncommon. By 1979, however, the concept of a homosexual Christian produced San Diego’s first coalition of gay religious groups, Ministries United for Gay Understanding. For gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) individuals making a claim on the Christian identity, this represented a significant paradigm shift that allowed the gay community to produce its own concept of the relationship between homosexuality and Christianity: fully gay, fully Christian. This paper shows how certain members of San Diego’s GLBT community began to define themselves as both gay and Christian between 1970 and 1979. In the early years, GLBT Christianity developed in the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), which appealed primarily to the homosexual community, and in Dignity, an organization of gay Catholics that did not have the sanction of the Roman Catholic Church. After 1975, Integrity, an organization of gay Episcopalians, and a group called Lutherans Concerned worked to be accepted as integral parts of their mainstream churches. By 1979, these four groups, through the Ministries United for Gay Understanding, asked San Diegans to accept that they could be both gay and Christian. This paper emphasizes four themes. First, the institutional movement was founded on the premise that practicing homosexuals could be fully Christian.

The Anglican Communion The Episcopal Church in the U. S. A., a small but influential mainstream Protestant denomination, is one of 38 national churches loosely joined in the Anglican Communion; these churches fully recognize each others' ministries and acknowledge the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury, a mark of these churches' historical origins in the Church of England. The Church of England itself was created amidst political and sexual controversy in the sixteenth century, specifically in Henry VIII's desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, in hopes of producing a male heir to the English throne. When Pope Clement VII refused to grant an annulment, the king broke with Rome, had himself (and subsequent monarchs) declared Supreme Head of the Church of England by the Act of Supremacy (1534). Theological Positions From a theological perspective, the creation of the Church of England was the particular English expression of the trends of the Protestant Reformation across Europe, as groups in various countries separated from the strict centralized authority of the Roman Catholic Church.

With a drift either to the port or starboard, the trailing rope would point elsewhere showing them they were off course. Anyone's course that heads into an unseen future, with too many variables, potential changes, and chances to predict the outcome, has the same dilemma as the Vikings. At the very least, one's course must be oriented with things in the past to know if it is heading anywhere desirable. Our Anglican or "Continuing Church" movement with its evolving objectives and emerging leadership at the helm, has stayed on course by looking back.

Hiatt was the first child born to Alfred and Frances (Radley) Hiatt. Hiatt had childhood dreams of entering the ministry, dismissed them as impossible, and then came to believe she had been called. She graduated from high school in Edina, Minnesota and attended Wellesley College for one year before transferring to Radcliffe College, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in American History in 1958. For two years after graduation, Hiatt worked as a Girl Scout professional in Hartford, Connecticut.
