ANTARCTICA When you set foot in the Antarctic there’s a good chance you’ll be the first person to stand on that exact spot. The majestic landscapes and miles of ice and snow will be unlike anything else you’ve ever witnessed before. For nature lovers, seeing whales catching air as they breach the ocean waves is an unforgettable moment. Not to mention steering a kayak through the ice floes, or listening to and learning from some inspiring guest speakers. And can we just talk about penguins? These entertaining creatures are closely associated with the Antarctic, and having the opportunity to walk amongst Adélie and Gentoo penguins is one of the joys of expedition cruising. Book a ‘category 1’ ship, a vessel for 200 passengers or less, for a bigger range of potential landing sites.

12-night ‘Antarctica’ round trip cruise from Ushuaia via the Drake Passage, Antarctic Sound, Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, departing 5 December 2019, prices from £9,630, silversea.com

VIETNAM The contrast between the tranquillity of the Mekong river and the hustle-and-bustle of modern day Ho Chi Minh City is something every tourist should experience. One moment you’re walking in old Saigon surrounded by centuries-old French colonial architecture, the next watching fisherman hunt for their supper using trusted techniques. But what is there to do? Why not delve into the fascinating (if somewhat dark) history of Ho Chi Minh City to explore the famous Chu Chi tunnel complex the Viet Cong, built to avoid the mass bombing above ground. Or, if you’d prefer something a bit cheerier, sail to Kratie and the nearby Dolphin Grounds to catch a glance of the elusive Irrawaddy dolphin – they’re quite playful!

SCENIC ECLIPSE SCENIC Billed as the world’s first ‘discovery yacht’, Scenic Eclipse will offer all-inclusive six-star expedition cruises in the Americas, Antarctica, northern Europe and the Med. Due THRILL OF to launch next January, the ship will feature 114 all-balcony suites, each with butler service, as well as a spa and gym. The adventure element is taken care of by the ship’s own helicopter and a seven-seat submarine, so guests can look THE NEW forward to exploring both above and beneath the water. LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT PONANT Sure to be a hit with environmentalists and adventurers alike, the world’s first hybrid electric/LNG luxury will debut in 2021. Named after a French polar explorer, Ponant’s new arrival will feature zero emissions when sailing on battery power. And with 135 cabins and suites, plus a spa and wellness centre, theatre, lounge, two pools and a choice of dining venues, the ship will be able to take luxury cruising into previously unexplored waters.

CORAL ADVENTURER CORAL EXPEDITIONS Built in Norway but maintaining her Australian roots, Coral Adventurer is a 120-guest expedition ship that will begin her 2019 maiden season ‘In the Trail of Tasman’ around the Indonesian archipelago. Suites and staterooms are luxurious, and the Explorer Bar with its 180-degree views is sure to be a popular spot for socialising. But this ship is designed for adventure – and thanks to six Zodiacs, two Xplorer tenders and daily expedition briefings, that’s exactly what her guests will get.
