1/13 Our arctic sights and northern lights expedition cruise starts and finishes in Reykjavík, Iceland. Across the Denmark Strait we explore the stunning Scoresby Sund fjord complex in East Greenland. Here we discover unbelievable scenery, historical sites, massive icebergs, a contemporary Inuit village, and of course the mesmerizing northern lights. We visit the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland. On our way back we explore Iceland’s picturesque Snæfellsnes peninsula. Every night on this voyage brings another excellent chance to experience the northern lights in a beautiful setting.

2/13 ITINERARY

Day 1: September 6 – Arrive Reykjavík, Iceland

Welcome to Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland and starting point of our expedition. After your arrival, you are free to explore this fascinating city. Reykjavík is home to a wealth of cultural institutions including museums, galleries, and the Hallgrímskirkja church. Leisure possibilities inside the city include parks, gardens, and thermal baths. Overnight Grand Hotel Reykjavik.

Day 2: September 7 - Embarkation in Reykjavík

This afternoon we welcome you aboard our expedition ship, the M/V Sea Spirit. Explore the ship and get comfortable in your home away from home for the extraordinary adventure to come. Savor the anticipation of your Arctic dreams coming true as we slip our moorings and sail out of the harbor into the bay of Faxaflói, where it is possible to encounter our first whales.

Day 3: September 8 - Across Denmark Strait

From Iceland we head across Denmark Strait toward Scoresby Sund in East Greenland, crossing the Arctic Circle on the way. There is a good possibility of whale sightings in this stretch of water. After nightfall, we have our first opportunity to see the aurora borealis.

3/13 Day 4-8: September 9 – 13 - Exploration of Scoresby Sund, Greenland

Scoresby Sund is a true Arctic wilderness and this part of the voyage is a real expedition. Our route and exploration opportunities here are heavily dependent on the weather and sea ice conditions we encounter. Our experienced captain and expedition leader decide the itinerary and continually adjust plans as conditions and opportunities warrant. You can be sure that the best possible advantage will be taken of the circumstances presented to us by Nature in this wild and remote corner of the Arctic. Scoresby Sund is the largest and longest fjord system in the world. This area contains some of the Arctic’s most impressive scenery. Deep fjords and narrow channels, flanked by ice-clad peaks up to 2000 meters high, reach deep into the mountainous heart of Greenland. Tidewater glaciers create colossal icebergs that float with wind and tide throughout the fjord system. On shore, fields of multicolored tundra are home to musk oxen and Arctic hare. The landscape—vast, open, and seemingly untouched since the beginning of time—is a hikers’ paradise. Throughout this area we also find ancient Thule archeological sites, historical trappers’ huts, and modern Inuit hunters’ cabins. The Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit is the only permanent settlement in the region. The community boasts an excellent museum, a gift shop, a post office, an abundance of Greenlandic sled dogs, and of course the opportunity to meet Inuit people. The days are filled with memorable excursions, sumptuous meals, presentations by our experts, and enough stunning scenery to fill your camera and overwhelm your emotions. Each night brings new possibilities for incredible displays of aurora borealis—the Northern Lights. This is the perfect time and one of the world’s best places to experience this otherworldly celestial phenomenon.

Day 9: September 14 - Cross the Denmark Strait

After our amazing time in Scoresby Sund we head back across Denmark Strait toward Iceland. Presentations and workshops by our expert staff, as well as our range of onboard recreation facilities, ensure that this day at sea is not idly spent. Seabird viewing and whale sightings can be enjoyed from panoramic open decks as well as exterior stateroom windows and balconies. Nighttime offers still more possibilities for aurora borealis!

4/13 Day 10: September 15 - Westfjords, Iceland

Our expedition day in the Westfjords area reveals the rare beauty of the part of Iceland where mass tourism disappears – only about 10% of Iceland's visitors ever see the region. Taking advantage of every weather favorable condition, we choose the best places to discover breathtaking coastal fjords, jagged bird cliffs, and tiny fishing villages embracing traditional ways of life.

Day 11: September 16 - Disembarkation in Reykjavík, Iceland

After breakfast we say farewell in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland and ending point of our expedition. Transfer to the international airport for your departing flights.

Super-spacious (43 square metres/ 463 square feet) elegant suite on the Sun Deck. Designed for entertaining, the Owner's Suite has a separate living room with game and meeting area. A BOSE stereo system provides background music or watch videos on the HD plasma TV. Sliding glass doors lead to a private deck. Refresh in the jetted bathtub in en suite facilities. Sea Kayak Club is typically offered on voyages that include High Arctic destinations such as Greenland, Svalbard (Spitsbergen), Franz Josef Land, or a combination of these thrilling places. Experience calving glaciers in Svalbard, cathedral-like icebergs in Greenland, or labyrinthine expanses of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, all from our sturdy and stealthy sea kayaks. Join us for an unscripted kayaking adventure as we explore rugged coastlines and remote waters that very few people have ever paddled.

Endless expanses of ice, beaches crowded with seals or penguins, sunsets over unbroken horizons, starlit skies, and even the majestic northern lights – they all present fantastic photographic opportunities – and in order to make sure that you come home with some spectacular images we offer you the chance to learn and practice your photography alongside an experienced professional.

Our expert Photographer will be on hand to answer your questions and give advice, both in the form of on-board lectures and workshops on shore. Explore the key elements of photography in a fun and relaxed setting, with plenty of opportunities for questions and feedback. Learn how to see light in a new way and experiment with the techniques of composition and framing.

Cruise rates are quoted per person and based on passengers sharing a cabin. Single supplement: 1.7 for Main Deck and Classic, Superior Suite; 2 for Deluxe, Premium and Owner's Suite.

Single supplements – Single occupancy of a double-occupancy cabin is available at 1.7 times the twin rate (“Rate per person offered” above) and available only in Main Deck, Classic and Superior Suites; single occupancy of a twin cabin is available at two (2) times the twin rate (“Rate per person offered” above) in the Deluxe, Premium and Owner Suites.

Voyage Rate Excludes:

• Airfare to/from Reykjavik, port of embarkation/disembarkation • Any visa or passport fees • Luggage and trip cancellation insurance • Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages other than those for special events and celebrations • Personal expenses such as laundry and telecommunication charges • Emergency evacuation insurance with a minimum coverage of US $200,000 per person (required). The Organization will ensure that each of its passengers has emergency medical and evacuation insurance with the minimum coverage amount. This insurance is available through Poseidon Expeditions, provided by Atlas Travel Insurance, or can be purchased by client through another provider. • Staff gratuities

All extra on-board services are added to the passenger on-board accounts. Hotel Manager shall balance the accounts and organize the possibility for passengers to pay their bills (cash or credit cards) on board before disembarkation.

Relaxed Reservations Policy for 2021 Arctic Travel While much of our attention is on the near-term and getting through the worst of COVID-19 travel bans and restrictions, we’re hoping that the new reservation policy below will help you start planning your future polar trip aboard our 114-passenger Sea Spirit. With this in mind – and to further encourage you to reserve the departure date and cabin category that most suit you – we have relaxed our preliminary hold and deposit policy for all 2021 Arctic voyages**.

• We will hold all new reservations free of charge for 2 months. • A reduced deposit of just 10% is required at the end of the two-month period to confirm the reservation. • Final payment is not due until 90 days prior to the departure in 2021-22.

** This offer is valid for any new reservation for any departure during the Arctic 2021 season based on availability.

Air Arrangements

Airfare is not included in the cruise rate. However, we can direct you to our preferred air supplier, Exito, who is familiar with our routing and can assist you with your air arrangements.

Insurance for your Polar Cruise Expedition Traveling to the Arctic is a great adventure, but sometimes unexpected illness or injury during the trip itself may change your plans and require medical evacuation. Please note that Poseidon Expeditions requires Emergency medical and evacuation/repatriation insurance coverage for all aboard the Sea Spirit, as per our Terms and Conditions - for the Arctic US $200,000. You will receive information on travel insurance from the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, shortly after your reservation has been made.

Booking Cancellations/Refunds All requests for cancellation must be made in writing. Reservations cancelled more than 120 days prior to departure are subject to a USD 750 per person cancellation fee. Reservations cancelled from 119 to 91 days prior to departure are subject to 20% per person cancellation fee. Reservations cancelled 90 days or less prior to departure are subject to full fare forfeiture (cancellation fee is 100%). For these and other reasons mentioned below, passengers are strongly encouraged to obtain trip cancellation insurance. The services included in the cruise rate are based on group participation, and no refunds will be made for any part of the program in which passengers choose not to participate, including any Zodiac cruises or landings. It should be understood that refunds will not be made to passengers who do not complete the tour for any reason whatsoever.
