  • Transits of the Northwest Passage to End of the 2020 Navigation Season Atlantic Ocean ↔ Arctic Ocean ↔ Pacific Ocean
TRANSITS OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE TO END OF THE 2020 NAVIGATION SEASON ATLANTIC OCEAN ↔ ARCTIC OCEAN ↔ PACIFIC OCEAN R. K. Headland and colleagues 7 April 2021 Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, United Kingdom, CB2 1ER. <[email protected]> The earliest traverse of the Northwest Passage was completed in 1853 starting in the Pacific Ocean to reach the Atlantic Oceam, but used sledges over the sea ice of the central part of Parry Channel. Subsequently the following 319 complete maritime transits of the Northwest Passage have been made to the end of the 2020 navigation season, before winter began and the passage froze. These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Circle is crossed near the beginning and the end of all transits except those to or from the central or northern coast of west Greenland. The routes and directions are indicated. Details of submarine transits are not included because only two have been reported (1960 USS Sea Dragon, Capt. George Peabody Steele, westbound on route 1 and 1962 USS Skate, Capt. Joseph Lawrence Skoog, eastbound on route 1). Seven routes have been used for transits of the Northwest Passage with some minor variations (for example through Pond Inlet and Navy Board Inlet) and two composite courses in summers when ice was minimal (marked ‘cp’).

  • Backgrounder
BACKGROUNDER Silversea is a luxury cruise company reflec3ng genera3ons of mari3me and travel experience. In the early 1990s, the Lefebvre family of Rome, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, conceived and organised a unique cruise company pledging to build and operate the highest quality ships in the ultra-luxury segment. The name "Silversea" was chosen because it connotes quality and luxury as well as capturing the romance and special sensa3ons of the sea. Silversea launched its first ship, Silver Cloud, in 1994, followed by Silver Wind in 1995, Silver Shadow in 2000, and Silver Whisper in 2001. The fleet was purpose-built for the ultra-luxury market, establishing a new class of smaller, in3mate vessels that could slip into more exo3c ports off the beaten path. These elite vessels were specifically designed for fewer guests, with more space and the highest levels of personalised service, delivered by mainly Italian and other European officers overseeing an interna3onal staff. In December 2009 Silversea took delivery of its next genera3on of ultra-luxury vessel, Silver Spirit. At 36,000 grosse tonnes (gr)t, and accommoda3ng just 540 guests, this in3mate ship has spacious suites— with 95% featuring a private veranda—and one of the highest space-to-guest ra3os at sea today. The onboard decor lends a sophis3cated 1930s Art Deco ambience to the public spaces, highlights of which include an indoor/outdoor spa measuring over 8,300 square feet (770 square metres), a resort-style pool, four whirlpools, and a choice of six dining venues including Seishin, showcasing Asian-fusion cuisine, and the innova3ve Stars Supper Club, offering trendseng menus and all-night entertainment.

VOYAGE TO GREEN AND GENTLE LANDS Exploring Gardens and Historic Sites from London to Bergen With American Horticultural Society Host HOLLY H. SHIMIZU and featuring an exclusive lunch at EDINBURGH ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS Aboard the Deluxe Le Boréal May 12–22, 2019 Le Boréal sailing into London Dear Friends, I’m pleased to invite you to join a small group of like-minded AHS travelers on a rare voyage that combines the pleasures of cruising and private and public garden excursions. The British Isles, Belgium, and Norway in springtime are lovely, verdant places, and this voyage is carefully designed to showcase the very best they have to offer. As we sail from London into the North Sea, we pause along the way to explore the remarkable gardens of both shores. Our first special engagements occur before we even step foot onboard ship. Pre- embarkation, spend the day at Kew Gardens, London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage site with the most diverse collection of living plants in the world. Before transferring to Le Boréal, your five-star vessel that hosts no more than 264 guests, we’ll also visit Chelsea Physic Garden, tucked away in an almost secret location beside the Thames and the oldest botanic garden in London. In other ports, excursions with a focus on gardens, art, and history will be available. From Ostend, you may travel to Bruges or Kesteel van Oostkerke to explore the garden designed by Mien Ruys. Norway’s Stavanger is home to the exotic gardens of Flor og Fjære as well as a fascinating maritime history.

THE ULTIMATE EXPLORER Discover the world’s first luxury polar exploration vessel “From where does this strange, powerful and enduring attraction to the polar regions come, such that after returning one forgets the mental and physical fatigue resulting from the expedition and dreams only of returning? From where do these deserted, terrifying lands attain their extraordinary charm? Is it the pleasure of the unknown? The thrill of the struggle and the effort required to reach them and to survive in them? The arrogance of attempting to do something that others do not? The joy of being far away from small-mindedness and meanness? All of these play their role, as does something more. I now consider that these regions leave a kind of reverent mark on a person.
