2019 – Term Dates OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN… 2019 – Term Dates Term 2 August Tena Koutou, Thur 8 Squash Rm1 Today I have been in meetings all day with principals from Fri 9 Senior Friday Skiing our Opuke Kahui Ako and the Mid Canterbury Principal’s Wed 14 OLS Speech Finals Association. Sometimes it feels that I’m often away at some Thur 15 Squash Rm1 meeting or other and in a small school, it feels difficult to Fri 16 Assembly 10am balance the workload that comes with being a teaching Senior Friday Skiing principal. Tue 20 Teacher Only Afternoon However, saying that, it is important to ‘keep your finger on 1.30pm close the pulse’ and attending these meetings is one way of Thur 22 Combined Speech Final doing that. Chertsey Hall Fri 23 Senior Friday Skiing Our Opuke Kahui Ako (Community of Learning), which is Wed 28 Full School Production made up of nine schools in the northern end of Mid Fri 30 Assembly 10am Canterbury, has recently changed the role of Lead Senior Friday Skiing Principal. Chris Murphy from MPS has stepped back from the September role and Colin Brodie from Lauriston has taken on the role. Wed 4 Ashburton Rotary With this comes the next phase of our journey in our Kahui Speech Finals Ako. We have consulted with a selection of students, with Thur 5 Senior Camp Quiz Boards of Trustees and with teachers as to what direction we Fri 6 Senior Friday Skiing will go in and we have come up with four areas of mahi – Mon 9 Social Justice Week work. Maori Language Week Wed 11 St Josephs Ash Rm1 These areas will focus on the following WISH and how we at Fri 13 FULL school Ski day OLS can connect with them: Thur 19 Opuke Student Hui @ Whanaunatanga – Relationships with community, parish, Rakaia students, families and staff Sun 22 Full School Mass Innovation – developing our own local curriculum Thurs 26 Crazy Hair Disco & Student led learning – ensuring our students have a voice Fish & Chip tea Hauora - Wellbeing for students, staff and parent community Fri 27 Assembly 10am End of Term 3 This is very different to the traditional achievement challenges of Literacy and Numeracy that have been Term 4 previously set and encouraged by the Ministry. Wed 23 Methven Area Athletics Fri 25 Athletics pp date From time to time, I’ll include updates from the Kahui Ako to Mon 28 Labour Day (no school) keep you all informed of what’s happening. If you want any November further information or have any questions, please feel free to Thur 14 Teacher Only Day (no give me a shout. school) Fri 15 ChCh Show Day (no Nga Mihi, school) God Bless, December Pattie Wed 18 End of Term 4 SCHOOL BUS SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REMINDER The speed limit for passing a stationary school bus that is dropping off or picking up children in 20kph in either direction. Children are more likely to run out into the road without looking, and the school bus is a large obstacle that obstructs their view of the road. If you are following a large vehicle that suddenly slows on a rural road, don’t assume you can overtake; it might have spotted a school bus and is obscuring you vision of it. On rural roads it’s possible to come around a corner and find a school bus on the side of the road, not leaving you much opportunity to slow down. Please take care on the roads where school bus route signs are present THANK YOU…. This week’s thank you’s go to you the Parents who kindly transported the Senior students to Ashburton to compete in the Winter Sports tournament - thanks for taking the time and being our sideline support. • Births, Marriages & Deaths from the Carbon Advocate 1882-1883
Births, Marriages & Deaths From The Carbon Advocate, 1882-1883 This is the fifth in a series of vital records extracted from the Lehighton Newpaper, The Carbon Advocate. Like the previous parts, in extracting the births, marriages & deaths, I have not included the following types of items: 1. Items that did not pertain to Carbon or the surrounding counties. I excluded anything west and south of Berks County, and south of Lehigh & Northampton Counties. I generally included anything north of Carbon county. 2. Estate notices. 3. Murder trials. 4. Coroner inquests when they are not part of the original death notice. In extracting these records, I have copied items as completely and exactly as possible. I have not attempted to correct any spelling errors. If I felt a need to add any text, I did so in brackets. Although most of the papers on microfilm were easy to read, there were some times where the image quality made things difficult. Because of this, researchers are advised to consult the original records. Volume 10, Number 7, Saturday, January 7, 1882 Local and Personal. James Coon, a well-known mine contractor of Pleasant Valley, Luzerne county, acidentally shot and killed himself on Monday while hunting. Local and Personal. There was so much material for the last edition that we decided to do an extra one. For me this is a sign of the dynamism and energy in our diocese and a reflection of all the wonderful things that are going on. It is one of the blessings of being the bishop that I get to see so many of the things that are happening and am able to participate in some of them. At a time when we can be inclined to think that faith is not important to people, we have so many witnessing to and working to support others within and beyond our community. This edition comes out as the Easter season is drawing to wonderful past which our forebears worked so hard for and an end with the celebration of the Ascension of our Lord we are now being asked to look to the future. • History of Saint James Parish, Davis
SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 4 Father John E Boll, Archivist No 22 HISTORY OF SAINT JAMES PARISH, DAVIS Taken from Material Gathered from the Saint James Parish Archives The first Mass in Davis (then called Davisville) was offered in 1869 in the parlor of Maurice Reardon’s Hotel, on the northeast corner of Third and C Streets, by a priest who came from Sacramento. The hotel burned in 1890. Father Patrick Scanlon, who commuted from Sacramento, became the first resident priest in Yolo County in 1870. Father Scanlon and other priests offered Mass intermittently for the next several years, primarily in the Yolo schoolhouse in Davis. The First Catholic Church in Davis The first Catholic Church in Davis was built in 1875 on the north-east corner of Third and I Streets. At that time, the Pontifical Annual reported there were 12 Catholic families living in Davis. Father Peter J Kaiser of Woodland was pastor when the Davisville church was constructed. Archbishop Joseph Alemany Dedicates Saint James Church The Diocese of Sacramento would not be created until 1886. The Vicariate of Marysville, established in 1860, included the north-eastern counties of California, all of Nevada, Utah and part of Colorado. Davisville in Yolo County was part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and as such, on June 10, 1881, Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany of San Francisco dedicated the church in Davisville to the honor of Saint James the Greater as a mission of Holy Rosary parish in Woodland. Mrs. Isaac Chiles, member of the pioneer Chiles family, donated an acre of land for a cemetery.
