  • Who Was Who in Early Modern Limerick by Alan O'driscoll and Brian Hodkinson
Who Was Who in Early Modern Limerick By Alan O'Driscoll and Brian Hodkinson The following was commenced by Alan O’Driscoll (AOD) while on a work placement in Limerick Museum in the autumn of 2012 and continued by Brian Hodkinson. It is a continuation of the Who was who in medieval Limerick, which can also be found on the Limerick Museum website. It straddles the period c 1540 to c 1700, so some figures may appear in both databases. It is compiled for the most part by using the indexes of the various sources using Limerick as the search term. However, it has been noted that these indexes are often not comprehensive, and so when sources are available online, then a scroll through the text highlighting Limerick has produced entries not in the index. Such scrolling has also found entries where place names are abviously Limerick ones but Limerick does not appear as a word, e.g. in Fiants and CPCRCI. So while I (BJH) like to think it is comprehensive, it may not be. Notes. • Where two similar names are believed to be the same person, the entries are combined. However, many repeated names appear in the same lists (particularly in the Civil Survey). Where this occurs and/or the two persons are listed as coming from a different location, they are separated, even if they are recorded at the same time. There are a great many repeated full names, such as William Bourke, and it has proved practically impossible to be sure of which of these are different people.

  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished the Preservation and Destruction of the Christ Church Cathedral Deeds Stuart Kinsella
Archive Fever, no. 10 (December 2019) No Good Deed Goes Unpunished The Preservation and Destruction of the Christ Church Cathedral Deeds Stuart Kinsella ‘Many charters were left scarcely legible, and particularly a foundation charter of King Henry II … could not by any means be read; the prior applied to the Barons of the Exchequer to enroll such of their deeds as were not wholly destroyed, and leave was accordingly given’ Image: Portrait of Michael Joseph McEnery, M.R.I.A., as printed in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Sixth Series, 14, no. 1 (1924): frontispiece. Beyond 2022 Archive Fever no. 10 (December, 2019) 1 | Page Archive Fever, no. 10 (December 2019) The Christ Church deeds were the oldest collection of material in the Public Record Office of Ireland. During the restoration of Christ Church in the 1870s, the cathedral authorities felt it wise to deposit the cathedral’s vast collection of medieval and early modern materials for safe keeping in the newly minted Public Record Office of Ireland, established in 1867, unaware, of course, that the materials would survive unscathed for only four decades.1 To the immense relief of posterity, a then junior civil servant in the office of the deputy keeper, was assigned to produce a calendar of the cathedral records, summarising them into English mostly from Latin and a few from French. Michael J. McEnery was his name, who began work in 1883, and was almost complete by 1884. He published them as appendices to the reports of the deputy keeper in 1888, 1891, 1892, with an index in 1895 up to the year 1602.

Yes, welcome to this publication of ‘your’ Theological Journal. In the name of the members of the Service Board we wish you happy but more importantly, informed and inspired reading from the articles you will find in this Journal. Since the last Journal, the younger, better ‘the more recently professed’ Sisters, met in Scala for a meeting (27.07-03.08.2016) The subject of the meeting was inspired by the words of Pope Francis’ in his letter to the Religious for the Year Dedicated to the Consecrated. We quote the Holy Father’s own words as addressed to the Consecrated: “… looking to the past with gratitude, living the present with Passion and looking into the future with hope” (Pope Francis). The meeting was graced with the presence of Rev. Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R., the Redemptorists’ Superior General, who spoke of some perspectives for the future of our Order. Sister Imma Di Stefano, O.Ss.R., the prioress of the Scala community, gave a gracious welcome address to all the participants, expressing the joy of her community as the hostesses of this meeting. (Sister Imma’s welcome address will be printed here in its entirety. It is the first article.) Sister Imma (of Scala) is well qualified to speak of “THE REDEMPTORISTINE CHARISM.” Her article follows her welcome address.
