“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you . . . plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).”

Greetings, Scecina Community!

I have great news! Scecina Memorial High School has received approval from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis to undertake the bold and exciting initiative of a forward-looking capital campaign.

This initiative will be the first of its kind in Scecina’s history. It will be a transformative step in our never-ending march of excellence—living the Gospel and attaining the best possible results in all that we do.

The campaign will seek gifts of prayer, service, and treasure for the following priorities that emerged from our Strategic Growth Plan, stakeholder discussion groups, and personal interviews:

• Constructing new exterior sports and activity fields

• Constructing a chapel inside the school building

• Modernizing and relocating the weight room to the school building

• Renovating the main entrance on Nowland Avenue while making it handicap accessible and more visitor-friendly

• Establishing an Academic Excellence Fund

• Expanding our Facilities Endowment Fund.

The organizational phase of the campaign is underway and will continue into 2018. Scecina alumni and friends locally and nationally will then receive more information and invitations to participate during the following 12 months.

Guiding the campaign will be an Executive Committee consisting of these alumni and friends:

Mary A. (Robinson, 1961) and David S. Allen George Newhart (1960) Dr. Sheila (McNelis, 1979) Gamache and Bob Bates Mike and Anne (Mullin) O’Connor Chris (1987) and Paje (Etling) Felts Bob Golobish, Vice President of Advancement Lori (Watts, 1977) and Kevin Johnson (1977) Jean (Kriech, 1985) Donlan, Campaign Coordinator Nancy (Wagner, 1985) and Kris Leming Joe Therber, President

We are in the process of inviting and enlisting Honorary Chairs, National Advisors and additional campaign leaders. Scecina has retained the consulting services of the Institute for School and Development (www.ispd.com) to help guide the campaign.

As a school community, we have made significant progress in every facet of Scecina. For example, once more we have received an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education. We modernized 24 classrooms over the summer and have a new principal, Dr. Joseph Brettnacher. In this issue of the magazine you will learn more about each of these steps forward. Let me conclude by saying that I am truly excited to see our capital campaign unfold and want to thank you in advance for your prayers, suggestions, and support.

Peace and blessings,

CONGRATULATIONS, SCECINA COMMUNITY Scecina has again earned an A grade from the Indiana Department of Education school accountability rating system.

The state’s school accountability system uses multiple measurements of academic performance and progress, including graduation rates; standardized test scores in Mathematics and English/Language arts; and measurable indicators of college and career readiness. Schools receive grades from A-F.

Indiana’s Growth Model tracks students’ academic progress from one school year to the next using standardized test scores. A significant dimension of Scecina’s A rating is the students’ test score growth from middle school to high school.

“I commend our students for believing in their growth potential, our teachers for fostering a growth mindset, and our parents for all they do,” said Scecina President Joe Therber.

President Therber said he was especially happy to see the school rated highly for preparing students for college and career. “School accountability is but a pathway to higher goals,” he said. “At Scecina, we want every college-bound student to identify and gain acceptance to his or her college or university of choice.” n

They came as part of a short-term program of Foreign Links Around the Globe (FLAG), an international student exchange program.

“It’s great that Scecina has the ability to bring people together,” said John Hegarty, Scecina’s Vice President of Community Initiatives and also the head of the international student program. “It does foster life-long friendships. It was amazing for me to see the close friendships that developed in such a short time.”

4 FATHER SCECINA MAGAZINE | WINTER 2017 FATHER TOM DAY

Tom Griffin ’62 says his answer will always be “yes” when he is called upon to serve the Scecina Community.

As a U.S. military veteran, every year he attends the annual Father Tom Mass. This year, he was the honoree. He was awarded the prestigious Father Tom Award at the annual celebration on Oct. 24.

Griffin was born on Oct. 26, 1944, just two days after Father Tom died at sea during World War II.

In 1963, Tom, a lifelong parishioner at Little Flower Parish, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany from 1964 to 1967, serving the nation in security and law enforcement.

Scecina President Joe Therber noted how Griffin has dedicated much of his life to serving Scecina. Principal Joe Brettnacher (left), Tom Griffin ‘62 (center), and President Joe Therber

Those who nominated Tom named some of the work he has done as a volunteer: countless hours reviewing yearbooks to update the school’s database, being a key member of the Scecina Veterans Committee, giving his insights and encouragement for the bronze bust of Father Tom in the rotunda, sharing his time and hospitality for his 55-year class reunion, and attending numerous Scecina sporting events to support our students and families.

“Tom is one of the most likeable people you could ever hope to meet,” said President Therber. “I know that I have grown as a person by knowing Tom and am grateful to call him a friend. “

In his remarks at the Father Tom Mass, Tom said, “Sometimes we come to a point where we try to do just enough to get by. FOOTBALL RUSHES TO SEMI-STATE

The Crusaders football team took Scecina fans on an exciting season-long ride, all the way through the Class 2A Semi-State game of the state tournament.

The Crusaders won the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship and finished the season 12-2. Their only losses were to Class 4A Roncalli during the regular season and to eventual state champion South Ridge in the Class 2A Semi-State game on Nov. 18.

“The thing that made this season so successful and so were the players,” said head coach The Crusaders defeated the Western Boone Stars for the Regional title Ott Hurrle ’70. “The 11 seniors on the team were amazing in their leadership but, as one of the seniors said: ‘It was the underclassmen buying into what we were doing that made the season so much fun.’ ”

The team also played a special game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Oct. 6. The Class 2A No. 3 Crusaders beat conference and Catholic school rival Cardinal Ritter on the state’s biggest football stage. The Crusaders topped the Class 3A No. 6 Raiders 27-14 to capture the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship.

Thanks to an enthusiastic and supportive Scecina Scecina’s student section was fired up for the Crusaders game against the Cardinal Ritter fan base, the Crusaders’ crowd was the biggest of the Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium night. Event organizers told Scecina Athletic Director Jason Kehrer ‘88 that the Crusaders had sold the most tickets of any of the four teams that played (Columbus North and Bloomington South played the second game.) “They said we more than surpassed expectations,” he said.

Senior co-captains Collin Connor, Drew Lowery, and Jack Wright led the team. Wright won the team’s Mental Attitude and Outstanding Teammate awards, while Lowery was Most Valuable Player.

Offensive lineman Patrick Lyons ‘19 and wide receiver David Baker ‘20 won All-City honors, along with Connor (defensive lineman). Baker was the MVP and Wright was the All-Academic player for the Lucas Oil game.

“I will remember this team with a great deal of fondness as the years go by,” said Hurrle. “That being said, we are all looking forward to next season and plan to play ‘one more week’.” n

FATHER SCECINA MAGAZINE | WINTER 2017 13 2016-2017 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS | FINANCIAL REVIEW

Greetings, 2016-17 BOARD OF DIRECTORS In my message in last year’s annual report, I discussed my excitement about the future George T. Newhart, Jr. ‘60, Chair of Scecina Memorial High School. Well, that excitement certainly was rewarded by the many significant accomplishments of this past school year. High on the achievement Steve Hodgson ‘74, Vice Chair list is the over $1.8 million raised in support of maintaining and enhancing the quality Nancy A. Leming ‘85, Treasurer of education offered to Scecina students. This generous support from the Scecina Reverend Robert Gilday, Secretary Community also enabled the summer renovation of 24 classrooms, most of which had Mike Delaney ‘83 not been updated since 1953. J. Kevin Johnson ‘77 Marie McNelis Last December, thanks to the efforts and generous contributions of many and led by the Class of 1964, the Gerald Ron Mead L. Matheny Community Library and the John P. Hofer Collaboration Room were dedicated. Jim Moloy ‘77 In terms of academic achievement, the school once more received an A rating from the State of Indiana and was Nick Petrone one of 73 Indiana schools with 25 percent or more of its students passing the Advanced Placement exams. In the Rick Pfleger Class of 2017, Scecina graduated 102 students, the highest in more than two decades, and most graduates had Sister Barbara Piller, O.S.F. several college acceptances. Jim Roe ‘68 In athletics, Scecina continued its tradition of producing highly competitive teams. The Crusaders girls softball Julanne Sausser team did it again, winning their third state championship. We look forward to continuing to be competitive, J. Barry Schneider, Immediate Past Chair maintaining our storied history on athletic fields and courts. Rick Smith ‘69 Reverend Chris Wadelton While our financial results, including the record fundraising amount, are very impressive, much remains to be done. In addition to maintaining our high standards of education and commitment to the development of EX-OFFICIO MEMBERS young adults, we will soon be in the midst of Scecina’s first capital campaign. We will need everyone’s support Father Paul Koetter, Dean of the East Deanery of time, talent and treasures to meet the school’s annual operating needs, as well as ensuring the success of the and Pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church capital campaign. In this regard, I ask for your prayers, dedication, commitment and all-out support for Scecina Joseph Therber, President Memorial High School in the years ahead.

Before closing for this year, deepest and most sincere thanks are in order to: President Joe Therber and his HONORARY LIFE MEMBERS Christopher Felts ’87 talented, skilled and dedicated faculty and staff; our alumni, friends and the entire Scecina Community; my distinguished and insightful fellow Board Members, and, of course, our students and parents. Also, a special thank Tim Jeffers ’83 you to Jim Moloy and Ron Mead, who are leaving the Board after valuable and much-appreciated service. Jim Joven ‘85 Phil Kenney As we approach of the calendar year, on behalf of your Board, I wish you a happy and safe Christmas Phil Wilhelm ’59 (dec.) season, and a healthy and prosperous 2018. May God continue to bestow His blessing on us, the members of the Lou Zimmerman Scecina Community.

Homecoming is sponsored by the Scecina Athletic Office and Alumni Office. Scecina started the evening with a tailgate sponsored by IndyAnna’s Catering and rolled right into a fun evening celebrating the Class of 1968 Crusaders football team between the first and second quarter and the Class of 1993 for their 25th anniversary at halftime. Afterward, alumni, friends and parents met up at Manley’s Irish Mutt for a post-game celebration. It was a great night to be a Crusader!

QUILTS OF VALOR By Rose Branson, Alumni and Donor Relations Coordinator

For Peggy (Kelly) Fowley, a 1967 graduate of Scecina, her 50th class reunion brought an opportunity to bring peace and closure to her classmates who served the country during the Vietnam War.

“Many of our veterans just never felt properly thanked for their service, especially those from Vietnam,” said Peggy.

She decided to take part in Quilts of Valor, an organization with a mission to “cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” 15 veterans from the Class of 1967 were presented with Quilts of Valor at their 50th reunion this past August.
