A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Our March of Excellence “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you . plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).” Greetings, Scecina Community! I have great news! Scecina Memorial High School has received approval from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis to undertake the bold and exciting initiative of a forward-looking capital campaign. This initiative will be the first of its kind in Scecina’s history. It will be a transformative step in our never-ending march of excellence—living the Gospel and attaining the best possible results in all that we do. The campaign will seek gifts of prayer, service, and treasure for the following priorities that emerged from our Strategic Growth Plan, stakeholder discussion groups, and personal interviews: • Constructing new exterior sports and activity fields • Constructing a chapel inside the school building • Modernizing and relocating the weight room to the school building • Renovating the main entrance on Nowland Avenue while making it handicap accessible and more visitor-friendly • Establishing an Academic Excellence Fund • Expanding our Facilities Endowment Fund. The organizational phase of the campaign is underway and will continue into 2018. Scecina alumni and friends locally and nationally will then receive more information and invitations to participate during the following 12 months. Guiding the campaign will be an Executive Committee consisting of these alumni and friends: Mary A. (Robinson, 1961) and David S. Allen George Newhart (1960) Dr. Sheila (McNelis, 1979) Gamache and Bob Bates Mike and Anne (Mullin) O’Connor Chris (1987) and Paje (Etling) Felts Bob Golobish, Vice President of Advancement Lori (Watts, 1977) and Kevin Johnson (1977) Jean (Kriech, 1985) Donlan, Campaign Coordinator Nancy (Wagner, 1985) and Kris Leming Joe Therber, President We are in the process of inviting and enlisting Honorary Chairs, National Advisors and additional campaign leaders. As a school community, we have made significant progress in every facet of Scecina. For example, once more we have received an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education. We modernized 24 classrooms over the summer and have a new principal, Dr. Joseph Brettnacher. In this issue of the magazine you will learn more about each of these steps forward. Let me conclude by saying that I am truly excited to see our capital campaign unfold and want to thank you in advance for your prayers, suggestions, and support. Peace and blessings, Joseph S. Therber President FATHER SCECINA MAGAZINE | WINTER 2017 1 NOWLAND news CONGRATULATIONS, SCECINA COMMUNITY Scecina has again earned an A grade from the Indiana Department of Education school accountability rating system. The state’s school accountability system uses multiple measurements of academic performance and progress, including graduation rates; standardized test scores in Mathematics and English/Language arts; and measurable indicators of college and career readiness. Schools receive grades from A-F. Indiana’s Growth Model tracks students’ academic progress from one school year to the next using standardized test scores. A significant dimension of Scecina’s A rating is the students’ test score growth from middle school to high school. “I commend our students for believing in their growth potential, our teachers for fostering a growth mindset, and our parents for all they do,” said Scecina President Joe Therber. President Therber said he was especially happy to see the school rated highly for preparing students for college and career. “School accountability is but a pathway to higher goals,” he said. “At Scecina, we want every college-bound student to identify and gain acceptance to his or her college or university of choice.” n STATE RECOGNITION MEETING PEOPLE’S NEEDS Thanks to everyone who supported the Student FOR AP EXAM SCORES Council’s annual canned food drive for St. Vincent de Paul in November.
