  • Jhansi - Gwalior - Agra - Jaipur - Pushkar - Udaipur - Aurangabad - Mumbai
Duration: 16 Nights / 17 Days Places Covered: Delhi - Varanasi - Khajuraho - Jhansi - Gwalior - Agra - Jaipur - Pushkar - Udaipur - Aurangabad - Mumbai Day 01: Arrive Delhi Arrive at Delhi international airport. After warm receiving and greeting by our representative transfer to hotel for check-in. Delhi a bustling metropolis, and the capital city of India, successfully combines in its folds the ancient times with modern times. In fact, more mythological cities are believed to be here, like the city of Indraprastha from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, founded around 5000 BC. Numerous monuments were built over several centuries by different rulers like Qutub-ud- din Aibek, Alauddin Khilji, Tughlaks, Humayun & Shah Jahan, who built the Walled City Shah Jahanabad. Later in first half of 20th century much of New Delhi was planned by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who laid out a grandiose central administrative area as a testament to British rule in India. The division in walled city & New Delhi also marks the division in life styles. Rest of the day at leisure or walk around the city by your own. Over Night stay at hotel. Day 02: Delhi After Breakfast, we will visit the city. Visit “Old Delhi” with its narrow dirt roads, its myriad people and inexpensive and colorful bazaars that keep alive the traditional workmanship for which Delhi has always been famous. The first stop is Raj Ghat, the cremation ground of Mahatma Gandhi), The “Father of the nation”. Drive past the Red Fort, the red sandstone walled fort made in Mughal era by Emperor Shah Jahan. We end up at the Jama Masjid, the largest Muslim mosque in India.

  • Third International Workshop on Sustainable Land Use Planning 2000
Landscape Research Record No. 6 GHATS ON THE GANGA IN VARANASI, INDIA: A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO HERITAGE CONSERVATION SINHA, AMITA University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, [email protected] 1 ABSTRACT At Varanasi in India, where the Ganga reverses its flow, the 84 ghats (steps and landings) in a 6.8 km stretch are an iconic image of the city. Their built fabric evolved over 800 years from self- organized systems of worship and pilgrimage. The cultural landscape is complex in its layering and detail, and was resilient in its recovery from natural disasters as well as cultural upheavals. This can be interpreted as constituted by situated events, natural--flooding, silting, and changing flow of the Ganga--and cultural--ritual activities and performances in diurnal and seasonal rhythms tied to the Ganga. The riverfront is a complex ecosystem evolving from spatial practices responding to natural phenomena and its cycles that reflect the Hindu understanding of cosmic order. The ecosystem is stressed by over use and unprecedented levels of pollution in the Ganga, posing a challenge to the idea of the river as an archetypal symbol of purity and to the continuity of spatial practices. For sustainable conservation of the ghats, design and management strategies that will ensure a healthy and resilient cultural landscape should be based upon a systems approach. Patrick Geddes’ town planning reports in early twentieth century India are a useful precedent in connecting traditional cultural practices with ecological planning. In the proposed framework, the symbolic meanings of nature in traditional beliefs and practices are augmented with utilitarian functions in local energy cycles linking sun, flora, and fauna that will address air and water pollution and increase the capacity of the landscape to recover from flood events.

  • Varanasi: City of the Living, Dying and Dead
Varanasi: City of the Living, Dying and Dead VARANASl, U,P. India April 1996 "Shanrd, sanrh, sirhi, sanyasi, Unse bache, to sewe Kashi." ("Widows, bulls, steps, pundits, If you can tolerate these, you will enjoy Kashi.') raThe Kashi (Varanasi) Mantra By Pramila Jayapal "Why on earth would you want to go Varanasi?" an Indian family friend in Delhi said to me when I told her we were planning to spend some time here. "It's got to be India's dirtiest city. I only went because I had to; I had promised my mother I would sprinkle her ashes in the Ganga, so I did and just dipped my toe in the river to satisfy my promise to her. We got out of there as quickly as we could. Well, whatever you do," she continued, referring to an upcoming trip we were planning for my parents-in-law's visit, "don't take your in-laws there when they come. It's an embarrassment to us." She, along with others who voiced similar sentiments, made us nervous. Yet, on the other side, there were the words of friends and relatives who had been to Vara- nasi (also called Banaras and Kashi) and loved it. "It is the city which is most rep- resentative of India," an Indian friend in the States said. "It is fascinating." We knew we had to come. Varanasi is Hindu India's holiest city, the city of the life-giving Ganges River. Hundreds of pilgrims come every day from all parts of India: some to bathe in the Ganges, some to do the 5-6 day Panch Kroshi pilgrim- age around the city's sacred sites and others to die here.

  • Towns of India: Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure
Towns of India Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure HSMI – HUDCO Chair – NIUA Collaborative Research 2016 Towns of India Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure HSMI – HUDCO Chair – NIUA Collaborative Research 2016 Foreword An increasing number of people live in small and medium-sized towns in the periphery of large cities as the world completes its process of urban transition. India is no exception to this phenomenon. It is in these towns where national economies are to be built, solutions to global challenges such as inequality and the impacts of climate change are to be addressed, and future generations are to be educated. The reality in India, however, suggests that the small towns are not fully integrated in the urban fabric of the nation. They have enormous backlogs in economic infrastructure, weak human capacity, high levels of under unemployment and unemployment, and extremely weak local economies. However, with their growing numbers – there are more than 2,500 new towns added in the last Population Census– the role of small and medium-sized towns in the national economy will have a significant influence upon the future social and economic development of larger geographic regions. If these towns were better equipped to steer their economic assets and development, the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could be increased, with significant benefits reducing rural poverty in the hinterlands. This research on small towns, those below 100,000 population, was conducted at the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi, under Phase III of the HUDCO Chair project during the period 2015-16.
