  • Daphne Du Maurier Chapter 1 Last Night I Dreamed I Went to Manderley
Rebecca: Daphne du Maurier Chapter 1 Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley* again. It seemed to me that I was passing through the iron gates that led to the driveway. The drive was just a narrow track now, its stony surface covered with grass and weeds. Sometimes, when I thought I had lost it, it would appear again, beneath a fallen tree or beyond a muddy 5 pool formed by the winter rains. The trees had thrown out new low branches which stretched across my way. I came to the house suddenly, and stood there with my heart beating fast and tears filling my eyes. There was Manderley, our Manderley, secret and silent as it had 10 always been, the grey stone shining in the moonlight of my dream. Time could not spoil the beauty of those walls, nor of the place itself, as it lay like a jewel in the hollow of a hand. The grass sloped down towards the sea, which was a sheet of silver lying calm under the moon, like a lake undisturbed by wind or storm. 15 I turned again to the house, and I saw that the garden had run wild, just as the woods had done. Weeds were everywhere. But moonlight can play strange tricks with the imagination, even with a dreamer’s imagination. As I stood there, I could swear that the house was not an empty shell, but lived and breathed as it had 20 lived before. Light came from the windows, the curtains blew softly in the night air, and there, in the library, the door stood half open as we had left it, with my handkerchief on the table beside the bowl of autumn flowers.

  • Book Club Discussion Guide
Book Club Discussion Guide Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier ______________________________________________________________ About the Author Daphne du Maurier, who was born in 1907, was the second daughter of the famous actor and theatre manager-producer, Sir Gerald du Maurier, and granddaughter of George du Maurier, the much-loved Punch artist who also created the character of Svengali in the novel Trilby. After being educated at home with her sisters, and then in Paris, she began writing short stories and articles in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published. Two others followed. Her reputation was established with her frank biography of her father, Gerald: A Portrait, and her Cornish novel, Jamaica Inn. When Rebecca came out in 1938 she suddenly found herself to her great surprise, one of the most popular authors of the day. The book went into thirty-nine English impressions in the next twenty years and has been translated into more than twenty languages. There were fourteen other novels, nearly all bestsellers. These include Frenchman's Creek (1941), Hungry Hill (1943), My Cousin Rachel (1951), Mary Anne (1954), The Scapegoat (1957), The Glass-Blowers (1963), The Flight of the Falcon (1965) and The House on the Strand (1969). Besides her novels she published a number of volumes of short stories, Come Wind, Come Weather (1941), Kiss Me Again, Stranger (1952), The Breaking Point (1959), Not After Midnight (1971), Don't Look Now and Other Stories (1971), The Rendezvous and Other Stories (1980) and two plays— The Years Between (1945) and September Tide (1948). She also wrote an account of her relations in the last century, The du Mauriers, and a biography of Branwell Brontë, as well as Vanishing Cornwall, an eloquent elegy on the past of a country she loved so much.

Without their constant love and support, this paper would not have been possible. Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr. Monahan for serving as my advisor during this experience and for introducing me to Daphne du Maurier‟s literature. Dr. Monahan, your assistance has made this process much less overwhelming and significantly more enjoyable. I would also like to thank Doris D‟Elia in assisting me with my research for this paper. Doris, your help allowed me to enjoy writing this paper, rather than fearing the research I needed to conduct. Gentile4 Abstract: Daphne du Maurier lived an unconventional life in which she rebelled against the standards society had set in place for a woman of her time. Du Maurier‟s inferiority complex, along with her incestuous feelings and bisexuality, set the stage for the characters and events in her most famous novel, Rebecca.

Case Western Reserve Law Review·Volume 66·Issue 3·2016 An Idea of Authorship: Orson Welles, The War of the Worlds Copyright, and Why We Should Recognize Idea- Contributors as Joint Authors Timothy J. McFarlin† Abstract Did Orson Welles co-author the infamous War of the Worlds broad- cast? The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has told us no, primarily because he only contributed the idea behind the broadcast, and ideas alone can’t be copyrighted. “An Idea of Authorship” challenges this premise—that ideas, no matter how significant, cannot qualify for joint authorship in collaborative works—and argues that we as a society should, under certain circumstances, recognize idea-contributors like Welles as joint authors.

  • The Invisible Woman: Rebecca, After an Audiovisual Essay
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN: REBECCA, AFTER AN AUDIOVISUAL ESSAY BY R.V. LISBOA JOSÉ BÉRTOLO University of Lisbon, Centre for Comparative Studies [email protected] https://10.34632/jsta.2020.9379 ABSTRACT This article analyzes several aesthetic, narrative and theoretical topics firstly developed by Alfred Hitchcock in Rebecca (1940) and recently explored and reinvented by Ricardo Vieira Lisboa in his audiovisual essay Some Visual Thoughts About Perception In Rebecca (2020). Other specific works and references also come into play, such as the (original Vol. 12, n.2 (2020): pp. 138-142 and derivative) novels of Daphne du Maurier and Ana Teresa Pereira, other films by Hitchcock, and Stanley Cavell’s conceptualization of the “unknown woman” in classical melodrama. In Hitchcock’s film, the topics under analysis here are narratively acted out in the characters of Rebecca and the unnamed protagonist played by actress Joan Fontaine. However, they also materialize theoretical aspects of the spectral ontology of cinema: i.e. the dynamics between absence and presence, invisibility and visibility, past and present, the dead and the living, perception and point of view, the indexicality and materiality of moving images. Keywords: Absence; Audiovisual essay; Alfred Hitchcock; Invisibility; Journal of Science and Technology of the Arts of the Journal of Science and Technology Ricardo Vieira Lisboa; Spectrality. 139 Do you think that the dead come back and watch the living? Sometimes I wonder if she doesn’t come back here to Manderley and watch you and Mr. de Winter together. Mrs. Danvers, Rebecca Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) poses an inherent reflection on the nature of film motivated by two female characters.
