Staff Meeting October 10, 2012 Telenet Present: Steve Ast, Gretchen Bartelson, John Cavanah, Kathy Cornwall, Doug Greene, Rebecca Hannum, Ann Jenkins, Jean Kelly, Marni Kelso, Tracy Sleep, Theresa Zeigler, Zach Walker Proceedings Information and Discussion Items Staff reported positive feedback concerning the Fall Workshop held in Urbandale October 4/5. Ann Jenkins said there were some issues with the physical set-up at the training center not being ready. Staff assisted in completing the work. Slow internet access continues to be an issue. Faculty were pleased with topics presented. Gretchen Bartelson enjoyed the sessions and commended the good interaction. Doug Greene heard only positive comments and appreciated the opportunity for networking. He thanked staff for their efforts. Tracy Sleep had seventeen participants for her sessions which were held at the conference center. She said discussions were great and comments were positive. An issue with paint fumes caused by maintenance working in the pool area made the experience less than ideal, but hotel staff did what they could to alleviate the overpowering odor. Rebecca Hannum heard good reviews from SECC Bookstore and Student Services participants. Theresa Zeigler thanked staff for filling in while she attended Pearson eCollege Executive Leadership Forum in Dallas, TX. Rebecca Hannum has been trying to gather customized information from partner schools to compile detailed Winterim information to disseminate. Schools are asked to supply specific information such as withdrawal dates, textbook sale dates, and contact information. To expedite a response, Hannum will send out a “fill-in-the-blank” email. Ann Jenkins will need the information for a faculty meeting set for October 26. The information will also be posted online. Earlier discussion stated that Winterim classes should not be proctored. Beth Wood’s course may be an exception. Marni Kelso is contacting the instructor to clarify. Enrollment is now open for Winterim. Marni Kelso asked about setting up a new Hybrid term for non-shared courses to catch differing census dates for accurate billing. Zach Walker mentioned a monthly census billing model exists for that purpose. Walker will confirm with the Pearson billing department. Two half-year terms will be combined to create one term which can contain all “odd” non-shared courses. Instructors can control and restrict student access to courses. Kelso will announce when the new term is ready to receive hybrids. She suggests that the start and end dates be incorporated in the course titles to eliminate confusion. Three courses (Principles of Supervision, Criminal Law, Math for Liberal Arts) will have eBooks and embedded materials for a pilot this Spring. Cost for the embedded material has been set at $88 for registration purposes. Theresa Zeigler will notify all if a lower amount is negotiated before the start of classes. No concerns are expected for the lower enrollment Principles of Supervision and Criminal Law courses. Kathy Cornwall presented questions Bookstores asked about the Math for Liberal Arts course. Traditionally, math students have preferred a hard copy textbook. Why is only 50% printable for those wanting a hard copy? o Course Smart sets that standard. Students wanting a full copy may purchase a loose-leaf full version. The cost of such a version has been said to be as little as $20 or as expensive as $90-$100. Bookstores are requesting actual amounts in writing. What is the turnaround time to provide loose-leaf textbooks? o A file to download can be provided to the schools to print themselves. Is this included in the pilot? Would printing use up the allotted printing privileges allowed to students? The $88 eBook and materials fee is non-refundable. Would there be an additional cost to students wanting the loose-leaf version? What would Drop and Refund dates be? o Dates will be set by individual schools. What accommodations are in place for the visually impaired? eCollege is not compatible with all screen readers which students may have access to. o Course Smart is a leader in meeting all special needs guidelines. Tools are built in. Compatibility should not be an issue. How will Math courses be designated so students hesitant to be part of the pilot can choose traditional course. o Course differences will be clearly communicated to all. Each school should take responsibility to inform their students. Courses title should reflect the difference so students are aware before enrolling. The embedded content will solve the earlier issue of faulty access codes. It is hoped this will make the pilot course a popular choice. Rebecca Hannum requested a telenet be scheduled with Steve Stembridge, Kathy Cornwall, Theresa Zeigler and Bookstore personnel to clarify these and other issues. Zeigler agreed to work with Cornwall to schedule. Pearson Learning Solutions Cite 2013 Conference will be held April 2-4 in Chicago. The deadline to propose presentations is October 26th. Registration will open December 3rd. Theresa Zeigler has asked for ideas for sessions and speakers for ICCOC Spring Conference, March 24-26 in West Des Moines. Zach Walker announced that Project Operational calls will resume every other Tuesday at 10 AM to provide updates on new projects, bug fixes, and general progress. Round Table Kathy Cornwall – Bookstores will be able to begin entering Spring textbook information by the end of the week. Two partner Bookstores have never been visited by a Pearson rep. They would like a visit scheduled. Student Services staff expressed concern on how to advise students on courses without a current syllabus. Ongoing issue. John Cavanah – will be sending out a spreadsheet to request new courses Rebecca Hannum – requested moving the start time for staff meetings to 3:00 to accommodate the longer running time. All agreed.
