This essay discusses a psychological study in Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. Rebecca is a very psychological novel, since a lot of psychological phenomena emerges from the beginning to the end of the novel. Psychological phenomena found in the novel among other things are dream analysis, Narcissist complex, Cinderella complex, Electra complex, impulsive id, ego, and super ego, cathexis, as well as various types of ego defense mechanism. Each character within the novel such as Rebecca, Maxim de Winter, Maxim’s second wife, and Mrs. Danvers, have his or her psychological characteristics, reaction, and problem. Dream in the beginning and the burning Manderley house at the end of the story are symbol of the ultimate psychological phenomena in the novel Rebecca. Keywords: Dream analysis, ego defense mechanism, Rebecca, id- ego-super ego, psychological complex. The presence of psychology has given much influence on literature and literary criticism. The relationship between literature and psychology commonly derives from psychological dimension in literary works and the application of psychology theory in interpreting literary texts. Staff Meeting October 10, 2012 Telenet Present: Steve Ast, Gretchen Bartelson, John Cavanah, Kathy Cornwall, Doug Greene, Rebecca Hannum, Ann Jenkins, Jean Kelly, Marni Kelso, Tracy Sleep, Theresa Zeigler, Zach Walker Proceedings Information and Discussion Items Staff reported positive feedback concerning the Fall Workshop held in Urbandale October 4/5. Ann Jenkins said there were some issues with the physical set-up at the training center not being ready. Staff assisted in completing the work. Slow internet access continues to be an issue. Faculty were pleased with topics presented. Gretchen Bartelson enjoyed the sessions and commended the good interaction. Doug Greene heard only positive comments and appreciated the opportunity for networking. He thanked staff for their efforts. Tracy Sleep had seventeen participants for her sessions which were held at the conference center. She said discussions were great and comments were positive. An issue with paint fumes caused by maintenance working in the pool area made the experience less than ideal, but hotel staff did what they could to alleviate the overpowering odor. Rebecca Hannum heard good reviews from SECC Bookstore and Student Services participants. Theresa Zeigler thanked staff for filling in while she attended Pearson eCollege Executive Leadership Forum in Dallas, TX. Rebecca Hannum has been trying to gather customized information from partner schools to compile detailed Winterim information to disseminate. Schools are asked to supply specific information such as withdrawal dates, textbook sale dates, and contact information. To expedite a response, Hannum will send out a “fill-in-the-blank” email. Ann Jenkins will need the information for a faculty meeting set for October 26. -

Conventions Were Outraged: Country, House, Fiction Kristen Kelly Ames A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2014 © Kristen Kelly Ames, 2014 ii ABSTRACT The dissertation traces intersections among subjectivity, gender, desire, and nation in English country house novels from 1921 to 1949. Inter-war and wartime fiction by Daphne du Maurier, Virginia Woolf, Nancy Mitford, P. G. Wodehouse, Elizabeth Bowen, and Evelyn Waugh performs and critiques conventional domestic ideals and, by extension, interrupts the discourses of power that underpin militaristic political certainties. I consider country house novels to be campy endorsements of the English home, in which characters can reimagine, but not escape, their roles within mythologized domestic and national spaces. The Introduction correlates theoretical critiques of nationalism, class, and gender to illuminate continuities among the naïve patriotism of the country house novel and its ironic figurations of rigid class and gender categories. Chapter 1 provides generic and critical contexts through a study of du Maurier’s Rebecca, in which the narrator’s subversion of social hierarchies relies upon the persistence, however ironic, of patriarchal nationalism. That queer desire is the necessary center around which oppressive norms operate only partially mitigates their force. Chapter 2 examines figures of absence in “A Haunted House,” To the Lighthouse, and Orlando. Woolf’s queering of the country house novel relies upon her Gothic figuration of Englishness, in which characters are only included within nationalist spaces by virtue of their exclusion. -

The drive was just a narrow track now, its stony surface covered with grass and weeds. Sometimes, when I thought I had lost it, it would appear again, beneath a fallen tree or beyond a muddy 5 pool formed by the winter rains. The trees had thrown out new low branches which stretched across my way. I came to the house suddenly, and stood there with my heart beating fast and tears filling my eyes. There was Manderley, our Manderley, secret and silent as it had 10 always been, the grey stone shining in the moonlight of my dream. Time could not spoil the beauty of those walls, nor of the place itself, as it lay like a jewel in the hollow of a hand. The grass sloped down towards the sea, which was a sheet of silver lying calm under the moon, like a lake undisturbed by wind or storm. 15 I turned again to the house, and I saw that the garden had run wild, just as the woods had done. Weeds were everywhere. But moonlight can play strange tricks with the imagination, even with a dreamer’s imagination. As I stood there, I could swear that the house was not an empty shell, but lived and breathed as it had 20 lived before. Light came from the windows, the curtains blew softly in the night air, and there, in the library, the door stood half open as we had left it, with my handkerchief on the table beside the bowl of autumn flowers. -

A Gilded Cage: A Feminist Analysis of Manor House Literature By Katelyn Billings ********* Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in the Department of English UNION COLLEGE April, 2016 Abstract: This thesis focuses on women struggling with social rules and gender restrictions in Victorian and Edwardian English manor houses. The culture of the manor home had an incredibly powerful impact on the female protagonists of the literary texts I analyze, and in this thesis, I demonstrate how it stifled the growth and agency of women. With the end of the age of the British Great Houses in the twentieth century, there was the simultaneous rise of the New Woman, an emerging cultural icon that challenged conservative Victorian conventions. With the values and ideologies surrounding the New Woman in mind, this thesis analyzes the protagonists of Jane Eyre, Howards End and Rebecca in order to present the infiltration of the New Woman in the Great House genre, and how she brought about its end.
