Finalists for Excellence in Teaching Awards Announced
Edmonton...In recognition of outstanding creativity and innovation, 130 Alberta educators have been selected as the 2004 Excellence in Teaching Awards finalists. Included are five finalists selected for the SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award. "Albertans can be proud of the contributions our teachers make in the classroom every day," said Minister of Learning Dr. Lyle Oberg. "Alberta has many outstanding teachers and these finalists exemplify this excellence and the creative approaches teachers are taking to inspire students and colleagues to be their best." Finalists will receive an award certificate, which will be presented to them at local ceremonies in their schools or communities. The finalists were chosen from among 369 eligible nominees by a selection committee of representatives of stakeholders and education partners in Alberta's learning community. Of the 130 finalists, 20 will be recognized with a Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award, while three more will receive the SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award. A dinner and awards ceremony will be held in Calgary's Metropolitan Convention Centre on May 1, 2004, to celebrate the accomplishments of these 23 outstanding teachers. The 16th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented by Alberta Learning with the support of The Document Company, XEROX, the SMARTer Kids Foundation, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Edmonton Journal, and the Alberta Chambers of Commerce.
