  • Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire
Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire by Peter Hurd; reorganized and amended by Holger Hoos, editor-in-chief since 2020 version 1.2 (21 March 2021) This collection is based on the catalogue of musical works requiring heckelphone or bass oboe instrumen- tation assembled by Peter Hurd beginning in 1998. For this new edition, the original version of the repertoire list has been edited for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and it has been extended with a number of newly discovered pieces. Some entries could not (yet) be rigorously verified for accuracy; these were included nonetheless, to provide leads for future investigation, but are marked clearly. Pieces were selected for inclusion based solely on the use of heckelphone, bass oboe or lupophone, without any attempt at assessing their artistic merit. Arrangements of pieces not originally intended for these instruments were included when there was clear evidence that they had found a significant audience. The authors gratefully acknowledge contributions by Michael Finkelman, Alain Girard, Thomas Hiniker, Robert Howe, Gunther Joppig, Georg Otto Klapproth, Mark Perchanok, Andrew Shreeves and Michael Sluman. SZÁZADI ÉS A KORTÁRS ZENÉBEN DLA DOKTORI ÉRTEKEZÉS 2011 Absztrakt A disszertáció megírásában a fő motiváció a hiánypótlás volt, hiszen a kelet-ázsiai régió duplanádas hangszereiről nincs átfogó, ismeretterjesztő tudományos munka sem magyarul, sem más nyelveken. A hichiriki olyan hangszer, mely nagyjából eredeti formájában maradt fenn a 7. századtól napjainkig.

  • Woodwind Doubling for the 21St-Century Saxophonist
WOODWID DOUBLIG FOR THE 21 ST -CETURY SAXOPHOIST Increasing Versatility without Sacrificing Virtuosity Dr. Bret Pimentel Assistant Professor of Woodwinds, Delta State University SELECT YOUR WEAPO (S) Saxophone with flute and/or clarinet is the classic double; still a great way to improve your employability. If you already play flute well, consider adding piccolo. Bass clarinet can be a valuable double, too, especially for a baritone saxophonist. Double reeds are not easy (or cheap) but can really pay off for dedicated doublers. There are a few common double-reed doubling situations in musical theater, especially oboe (and maybe English horn) with tenor saxophone and clarinet, and bassoon with bass clarinet and baritone saxophone. More and more, doublers are being called upon to play folk, ethnic, and period instruments in pit orchestras and recording studios. For a collection of instruments that are relatively easy to play, inexpensive, and versatile, I suggest investing in various sizes of the high-quality plastic recorders (Yamaha, Aulos) and pennywhistles (Susato), and maybe some bamboo or PVC simple-system flutes. Other good possibilities include the shakuhachi (Japanese endblown flute), dizi (Chinese transverse flute), duduk (Armenian double reed), and panflutes (Romanian, South American). GET SOME SKILLS Start from the beginning. You NEED to do long tones, scales and arpeggios, and beginning methods/etudes on each instrument. No shortcuts! Suggested materials: Flute: Trevor Wye Practice Books (especially Book 1: Tone ), Taffanel and Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises . Oboe: Barret Oboe Method Complete (I like the Kalmus edition). Clarinet: from the Klosé Celebrated Method: “68 Exercises of mechanism,” “Practical exercises,” and “Scales and exercises;” Rose 32 Etudes .

An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Oboe Concertos Document Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe in the Performance Studies Division of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music January 11, 2016 by Elizabeth E. Eccleston M02515809 B.M., Wilfrid Laurier University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2007 D.M.A. Candidacy: April 5, 2012 256 Major Street Toronto, Ontario M5S 2L6 Canada [email protected] ____________________________ Dr. Mark Ostoich, Advisor ____________________________ Dr. Glenn Price, Reader ____________________________ Professor Lee Fiser, Reader Copyright by Elizabeth E. Eccleston 2016 i Abstract: Post-World War II in Canada was a time during which major organizations were born to foster the need for a sense of Canadian cultural identity. The Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Music Centre led the initiative for commissioning, producing, and disseminating this Canadian musical legacy. Yet despite the wealth of repertoire created since then, the contemporary music of Canada is largely unknown both within and outside its borders. This annotated bibliography serves as a concise summary and evaluative resource into the breadth of concertos and solo works written for oboe, oboe d’amore, and English horn, accompanied by an ensemble. The document examines selected pieces of significance from the mid-twentieth century to present day. Entries discuss style and difficulty using the modified rating system developed by oboist Dr. Sarah J. Hamilton. In addition, details of duration, instrumentation, premiere/performance history, including dedications, commissions, program notes, reviews, publisher information and recordings are included wherever possible.

14.3.2011 OboeinOxfordMusicOnline Oxford Music Online Grove Music Online Oboe article url: http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com:80/subscriber/article/grove/music/40450 Oboe (Fr. hautbois ; Ger. Oboe ; It. oboe ). Generic term in the system of Hornbostel and Sachs for an aerophone with a double (concussion) reed (for detailed classification see AEROPHONE ). The name is taken from that of the principal treble double-reed instrument of Western art music (see §II below). I. General 1. Oboes. The AULOS of ancient Greece may sometimes have had a double reed, and some kind of reed aerophone was known in North Africa in pre-Islamic times. Instruments of the SURNĀY type became established with the spread of the Arab empire around the end of the first millennium CE; they were possibly a synthesis of types from Iran, Mesopotamia, Syria and Asia Minor. From there the instrument, then used in a military role, spread into conquered areas and areas of influence: to India, and later, under the Ottoman empire, to Europe (around the time of the fifth crusade, 1217–21; there may already have been bagpipes with double reeds there) and further into Asia (to China in the 14th century). As the instrument spread, it came to be made of local materials and fashioned according to local preferences in usage, shape and decoration: the ŚAHNĀĪ of north India has a flared brass bell; the SARUNAI of Sumatra has a palm leaf reed and a bell of wood or buffalo horn; the ALGAITA of West Africa is covered with leather and has four or five finger-holes.

379 A HISTORY OF THE OBOE FROM ANTIQUITY TO 1750 THiES IS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS by Perry 0. Stephens, B. M. E. McKinney, Texas August, 1955 PEFACE The purpose of this study is to trace the development of the oboe and its use from the primitive double reed instruments to the oboes of the Baroque Period. Toward the end of this period the oboe became thoroughly established as an important section in the symphony orchestra and has remained so to the present time. The history of the oboe is not a clearly defined one since it dates from antiquity and has developed with other double reed instruments such as the bagpipe. There have been recent attempts to assimilate the per- formance of music of the Baroque and earlier periods. There- fore, the quality of the sound and the limitations of the instruments must be considered in order to achieve an accu- rate reproduction of the performance. It is in this area that this study should be of some benefit. The writer is primarily concerned with documentary references to the genesis of the oboe. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page PRFACE.. .. ... iii LIST OF ILTTTiOK. * v LIST OF PLATES . vii Chapter I. Eastern Kentucky University Chronicling the Developments of The Double Reed Honors Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of HON 420 Spring 2016 By Jenna Sehmann Mentor Dr. Christine Carucci Music Department Abstract Chronicling the Developments of The Double Reed Jenna Sehmann Dr. Christine Carucci, Music Department Abstract Description: This study examines scholarly articles in thirty-eight years of periodical journals, The Double Reed, published by the International Double Reed Society. Research articles were coded to fit into twelve prominent categories: career-related, composition, extended techniques/modern practices, health, historical, instrument, interview, pedagogy, performance practice, performer profile, reeds, and other. After an analysis of journal articles (N =935) from The Double Reed, results indicated historical articles, interviews, and composition-related articles were the most prominent categories. There was a fairly even dispersion between oboe and bassoon articles, while the majority of published material was generated from American authors. Additional trends are noted to inform and advance the double reed community.

  • Jeremy Montagu Did Shawms Exist in Antiquity? Page 1 of 4 1 but See
Jeremy Montagu Did Shawms Exist in Antiquity? Page 1 of 4 Did Shawms Exist in Antiquity? A paper given at an Archaeomusicology Conference By ‘shawm’ I mean the instrument which is played with a double reed, normally held wholly inside the player’s mouth (ie not controlled by the lips), and which is conical in bore, either in a conoid (as in China, S.E.Asia, India, Tibet, and Western Europe) or in a stepped cone (as in Turkey, North Africa, and the Balkans), and which, because of this conical bore, overblows the octave and all accessible harmonics. It thus differs from the normal aulos, mat, and tibia of Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome which, while they were usually also played with a double reed,1 were cylindrical in bore and thus comparatively low in pitch and unable to overblow the octave. This question, whether this instrument with which we would associate the name ‘shawm’ existed in antiquity, is one which is important, both to us as archaeo-organologists and, certainly so far as nomenclature is concerned, to the scholars of antiquity in general. Our colleagues, the archaeologists, those museum curators who are concerned with antiquity, and all those who write on the life and material culture of the ancient world, are notoriously careless about the names of most types of musical instruments, and particularly of wind instruments, to an extent which would be anathema to them if they were describing weapons, coins, pottery, or any other artefacts. How many museum displays, articles, books and so forth do we all know in which the aulos is called a flute? And this happens even when they are describing an illustration on a Greek pot in which the reed is clearly visible.

Its versatile character allows it to be a regular fixture in all musical genres. Why is this so? Let’s go find out! Engaging the Past The flute is the oldest woodwind instrument. Historians estimate that flute-like instruments can be traced as far back as the 9th century B.C. Prehistoric artwork shows evidence of the use of flute like instruments. The modern mechanism of the flute was invented by Theobald Boehm. He was a German goldsmith who was an adept mechanical artist. He lived in Munich from 1794 to 1881. A flute player himself, Mr. Boehm designed and built flutes with his own key mechanism. His key system revolutionized the modern design of the flute since it allowed flute players to play difficult passages with ease.

  • Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire
Heckelphone / Bass Oboe Repertoire by Peter Hurd; reorganized and amended by Holger Hoos, editor-in-chief since 2020 version 1.1 (1 February 2021) New entries in version 1.1 This collection is based on the catalogue of musical works requiring heckelphone or bass oboe instrumen- tation assembled by Peter Hurd beginning in 1998. The authors gratefully acknowledge contributions by Michael Finkelman, Alain Girard, Thomas Hiniker, Robert Howe, Georg Otto Klapproth, Mark Perchanok, Andrew Shreeves and Michael Sluman.
