ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT Ancient Greek Winds is a collecon of nine carefully-sampled tradional Greek woodwind instruments capturing the essence of the classical Hellenisc period. This group of restored arfacts includes single and double-reeded aulos flutes from bass to alto, as well as conch shell horns, brass salpinx horn, pan flute and plagiaulos. Each instrument is fully playable, with sustains, staccatos, true legato, dynamic expressions and effects tailored to its specific characteriscs. Ancient Greek Winds is the perfect melodic complement to our Ancient Greek Strings and Ancient Greek Percussion libraries. Each instrument was hand-craed using period-accurate methods, building materials, and tools by the Athens-based historical research group LyrΑvlos, led by Panagios Stefos. Fashioned from wood, reeds, conch shells, and bronze, these musical treasures faithfully explore the distant musical past and would be right at home in the hands of bronze age musicians over 2,500 years ago. Every instrument was recorded in precise detail by producer John Valasis, with round-robin variaons and mulple dynamics and voicings. You'll enjoy our flexible GUI features and a wide selecon of chromac and special effect arculaons. The interface provides complete performance controls, including true legato response control, simulated portamento bending, arpeggiator, flexible step-sequencable filter and LFO systems and a modular DSP FX rack to shape your sound however you wish. We’ve also created 20 unique sound-designed ambiences directly from the raw acousc source recordings to give you added texture and even more creave potenal. Ancient Greek Winds includes 3,517 24-bit 48kHz stereo samples and weighs in at just over 4 GB. AULOS The Aulos Bass double-reed flute is somewhat similar in appearance and sound to the duduk, but it has a darker, smoother rich and fuzzy tone. It includes piano, mezzo-forte and forte dynamics for clean sustains, vibrato sustains and arculated aack sustains, along with piano and forte true legato sustains for a naturally fluid performance style. It also features a selecon of fluer and drone effects. The Aulos Mezzo double-reed flute straddles the middle key range, with a soer yet brighter sound that the bass Aulos. It includes piano, mezzo-forte and forte dynamics for clean sustains, vibrato sustains and arculated aack sustains, each with 2x round-robin variaons per note. It also offers piano, mezzo-forte and forte staccatos with 4x round-robins, along with piano and forte true legato sustains with 2x round-robin. The FX secon includes so pulse sustains, drones, fluer-tongue, runs, trills and honks. The Aulos Tenor, Alto A and Alto B single-reed flutes are smaller, simpler instruments with much brighter, piercing mid-range and treble voicings. Each flute includes forte and vibrato sustains, with with 2x round-robins per note, staccatos with 4x round-robin, true legato arculaons with round-robin and a selecon of drone and trill effects. PLAGIAULOS The Plagiaulos is a 6-hole flute made of reed, bone or wood and played sideways like a modern concert flute. It has a high, breathy and lyrical quality. We recorded clean sustains, vibrato sustains, accented-aack sustains with piano, mezzo-forte and forte dynamics and 2x round-robins per note. There are also short spiccatos with 4x round-robins and staccatos with 8x round-robins and piano, mezzo-forte and forte dynamics. The true-legato sustain arculaons provide 2x round-robins per interval, for both piano and forte dynamics. The special effects secon features long and short fluers, fwips and drones. This Pan Flute is 16-reed curved single-row instrument with a crisp soprano voice. Arculaons include clean piano and forte sustains, ass well as clean and vibrato accented aack sustains, all with 2x round-robins per note. It also provides piano and forte staccatos with 8x round-robin variaons per note. Special effects arculaons include dynamic crescendos, low and high fluers, glissandos, breathy and puff effects and drones. 2 SALPINX The Salpinx is an ancient brass horn instrument with a long bore, flared bell, and a mouthpiece very similar to modern brass instruments. It sounds like a mellow, smooth trumpet. Because it has no valves, it is played much like a bugle, following the harmonic series. We captured piano and forte sustains with 2x round-robins per note. There are also long staccatos with 8x round-robins and piano and forte dynamics, as well as short spiccatos with 2x round-robins and piano and forte dynamics. Effects include long and short crescendos, short riffs and triplets. CONCH SHELLS Conch Shells are large sea snail shells with an aperature that produce a so, full-sounding horn sound. Each of the 4 shells produces a disnct note, with the full set roughly spanning a playable octave. We recorded piano and forte sustains, in both clean and accented variants with 2 round-robins per note. The piano and forte staccatos have 8x round-robins per note and the effects secon includes dynamic crescendos and a variety of breaths. 3 CREATIVE CONTROL FEATURES We’ve packed the user interface with powerful sound-shaping controls to give you complete flexibility. The master preset contains every sample in the library and a host of powerful expression features. There are 4 independent sound layers, each with a full set of parameters that can be linked, automated and customized. These include swell, aack, start offset, release (with pad-mode), vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, sound bank selecon, crossfader assignment and chromac solo. Chromac solo allows you to choose any sample on the keyboard and solo it as a tuned instrument across the enre key range. It can turn any sound into a playable instrument. Next, we used various sound-design tricks to morph the sounds from our journey into tonal and dissonant pads, synth-tones and ambient dreamscapes. You’ll find these in the Layer 3 sound menu. They can be played by themselves, or used to add texture and body to the primary sounds in Layers 1 and 2. Lastly, the Sub-Synth layer is a basic synthesizer with 10 shapes that can be added for transient and tonal support. In the advanced sengs pull-down window, you’ll also find an adaptable LFO system, with selectable LFO shape, modulaon target parameter, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing and fade-in me. You can also apply your choice of 13 lowpass, high-pass and FX filters, with assignable modulaon targets such as velocity, mod-wheel, expression, aer- touch, key posion and step-sequencer table control. You can also use our customizable arpeggiator, with a built-in velocity sequencer table and control over arp direcon, note ming, swing, randomizaon and duraon. We’ve also included a key and scale lock system that allows you to constrain your notes to a wide variety of common scales and keys for easy melodic composion and live performance. The built-in modular FX rack window offers 18 different DSP effect modules that you can assign in any of 10 available slots, in any order that you wish. You’ll find classic phase, flanger, delay, distoron, amp and cab simulators, compressors, EQ, rotator and so much more. The Reverb effect includes 99 of our own convoluon reverb impulse presets. We’ve captured a huge variety of different rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor environments, along with40 unique, strange and creave special effect impulses to completely transform the sound and open up whole new worlds of musical possibility. 4 CREDITS All instruments researched, designed and reconstructed by Panagios Stefos | www.lyravlos.gr Concept and producon by John Valasis | www.johnvalasis.com Musicians George Theodoropoulos | Aulos Bass & Mezzo double-reed flutes, Aulos Tenor & Alto single-reed flutes Michael Stefos | Salpinx, Conch Dimitra Chanialaki | Pan Flute, Plagiaulos Engineers John Valasis | Chief audio engineer Nick Chalntoupis | Assistant audio engineer Konstannos Sakkas | Assistant audio editor Video & Photo Constanno Mass | Videographer Mahos Paterakis | Photographer Special Thanks Kostas Katsikas, Vioria Volovik, Anna & Glen Tartaglia, Zacharias Tarpagkos, Alex Tsilfidis, Philip Marinelis 5 1.0 • 1 master NKI instrument bank in open Kontakt format • Five different Aulos, Conch Shells, Pan Flute, Plagiaulos, Salpinx arculaons and wind effects • 20 Ambience patches created from the source content • 20 Custom Sound-Designed FX and Ambient presets • 3,517 stereo samples • 4.13 GB Installed • 24-bit, 48 kHz Stereo PCM Wav Format • Flexible and intuive mul-layer user interface controls, with LFO, filter, glide, and arpeggiator. • Full FX rack with convoluon reverb with custom rooms, halls, chambers & FX environments Please Note: The full unlocked retail version of Kontakt 5.5 or later is required for all instrument presets in this library.
