The Genesis of Bristol ChemLabS The Bidding Process In early 2004, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced an invitation for departments or consortia of departments in higher education institutions (HEIs) to bid for funds to become a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). In April of that year, the School of Chemistry (SoC) through the University of Bristol (UoB) submitted a bid to the Stage 1 process, the primary focus of which was to become a CETL in the teaching and learning of practical, laboratory-based chemistry for undergraduates.
