Fifty-six (56) species of millipedes belonging to ten different orders of Diplopoda are listed as members of the Taiwanese fauna. All literature records are cited, and a number of new records are included as well. Representatives of four millipede orders (Glomerida, Polyzoniida, Siphonocryptida, and Platydesmida) are reported for the first time to the island as a result of recent collections. Nine species, including four undescribed ones, are new records from the island. These are Hyleoglomeris sp. (Glomerida: Glomeridae), Andrognathidae, two undescribed species (Platydesmida), Rhinotus purpureus (Pocock, 1894) (Polyzoniida: Siphonotidae), Siphonocryptidae sp. (Siphonocryptida), Orinisobates sp. (Julida: Nemasomatidae), Spirobolus walkeri Pocock, 1895 (Spirobolida: Spirobolidae), Trigoniulus corallinus (Gervais, 1842) (Spirobolida: Trigoniulidae), and Chondromorpha xanthotricha Attems, 1898 (Polydesmida: Paradoxosomatidae). The Taiwanese millipede fauna consists of 23 endemic species, 17 East Asiatic elements, and 11 synanthropic species. The following new synonymies are established: Glyphiulus tuberculatus Verhoeff, 1936 under G. granulatus Gervais, 1847; Aponedyopus jeanae (Wang, 1957) and A. reesi (Wang, 1957) under A. montanus Verhoeff, 1939; Nedyopus cingulatus (Attems, 1898) under N. patrioticus (Attems, 1898); Three species: "Habrodesmus" inexpectatus Attems, 1944, Orthomorpha bisulcata Pocock, 1895, and O. flavomarginata Gressitt, 1941 are removed from the list of Taiwanese millipedes because of their uncertain taxonomic statuses/unconfirmed occurrences. Descriptions and figures of every species are referred to wherever available to initiate further studies on the Taiwanese fauna. -

SHEAR Emeritus Professor, Department of Biology, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney VA 23943 USA Abstract The unusual millipede Cylichnogaster lawrencei Verhoeff, 1937 (Diplopoda, Polyzoniida, Siphonotidae) is redescribed from newly collected specimens. Species of Cylichnogaster are the only known colobognathan millipedes capable of vol- vation, and are also distinguished by their small size and low segment number. Taxonomic notes are provided on the poorly known family Siphonotidae. Key words: Cylichnogaster nigricornis, Siphonotus, Burinia, Rhinotus, volvation, South Africa, Table Mountain Introduction The millipede genus Cylichnogaster was established by Verhoeff in 1937 for the single species C. lawrencei, from the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. A second species, C. nigricornis, also South African, was added by Schubart in 1966. These two species are perhaps the most distinctive of all members of the millipede subterclass Colobognatha, since they are capable of more or less complete volvation, or enrollment, with reduced numbers of highly arched trunk segments that allow them to defend themselves by rolling up into a ball. When in this form, the legs, head and antennae of the millipedes are well protected, concealed beneath the tergites. Other members of the Colobognatha can at best curl into a tight spiral in which the head and antennae are in the center, but still exposed. -

While recent advances in their taxonomy and distribution have occurred in some areas of the world, our knowledge about the distribution and ecology of many taxa in the Pacific Northwest is limited. We review the ecology of taxa we observed and present results from a fieldstudy relating millipede abundance and community composi tion to enviroumental conditions of geology, vegetation, and climate. Millipedes of southwest Washington State were surveyed in the spring and fall of 2005 and 2006 along twelve headwater streams in forested landscapes. Overall, we observed 10 families of millipedes, with confirmed identification of 15 species. Millipede community composition differed strongly between seasons and across sites. For each season, we report family-specificmultiple regressions relating millipede abundance/presence to environmental condi tions. Given the ecological importance of millipedes as detritivores, more information on taxonomy and environmental relationships is needed. C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum. -

A brief historical account, data on the distribution, a comparative analysis of the island diplopod faunas, and zoogeographical notes are given. Introduction The Russian Far East includes archipelagos and islands off the western coast of the northern Pacific and the islands off the Chukotka at the border between the East Siberian and Chuckchee seas (see Map 1). The most known among them are the islands of the Primorsky Province in the Sea of Japan, Sakhalin Island, the Kurile Islands, the Wrangel, the Commander, Shantarskie islands and Karaginsky Island. Knowledge of the millipede fauna of the islands of the Russian Far East is still incomplete. Some of the islands of the East Siberian and Bering seas, the Sea of Okhotsk have hitherto remained unexplored. However, it is possible to surmise that these islands are devoid of diplopods or that their millipede fauna is extremely poor. The Wrangel Island seems to be totally devoid of Diplopoda; at least, large long-term (within 12 years) materials on Wrangel invertebrates contain neither millipedes nor centipedes (Khruleva 1987, Stishov 2006).
