    JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2014 Published: 2014 December 5 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2014 is the fourth published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD). The report finds that the New Zealand media market has failed to produce new, innovative media outlets, and that all the efforts to establish non-profit outlets have proved unsustainable. The report confirms the general findings of previous reports that New Zealand media space has remained highly commercial. It also confirms the financialisation of media ownership in the form of banks and fund managers. The report also observes that in 2014 convergence between New Zealand mass media and the communications sector generally was in full swing. Companies, such as Spark (former Telecom NZ), started to compete head-to-head with the traditional broadcasters on the online on-demand video and television markets. The American online video subscription service Netflix is entering the NZ market in March 2015. Additionally, the report notes evidence of uncomfortable alliances between citizen media, politicians, PR companies and legacy media. As Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book revealed, the National Party and PR practitioners used the Whale Oil blog to drive their own agendas. Also, events related to Maori TV, TVNZ and Scoop raise questions about political interference in media affairs. It is now evident that the boundaries between mainstream media, bloggers, public relations practitioners and politicians are blurring. Screen Practice, Audiences and Education for the Future Decade” Stayci Taylor RMIT University [email protected] Abstract This paper proposes that the concept of ‘script development’—already an ambiguous and arguably unexamined term—is further complicated by the rise of the ‘webisode’, drawing from existing discourse and scholarship on web series, much of which focuses upon (and/or problematises) an assumed amateur/professional binary that would cast online media as ‘other’. But, as this paper argues, while this distinction is being debated, a space opens up within which web series creators are making their own rules. In other words, ‘the Wild West’ landscape of web series, where ‘both the newbie and the veteran can create their own shows without permission from, or the approval of, traditional electronic media networks and studios which historically served as gatekeepers’ (LA Web Fest Founder Michael Ajakwe, quoted in Liang 2013), might be facilitating new practices of script development which, given the crossover success of many web series creatives, might be infiltrating those of the mainstream. Mr Banks has pleaded not guilty to that charge and the trial commenced on 19 May 2014. [3] Prior to the commencement of the trial, TV3/Media Works applied for permission to cover the trial, and to film the proceedings. Beatty Abstract With the fragmentation of the audience in the diGital mediascape, television broadcasters are looKinG for ways to strenGthen their brand and secure stronG ratinGs. This article arGues that media events, especially news events, are used by television broadcasters to promote journalistic cultural authority. The core elements of the media event Genre (liveness, immediacy, intimacy, dramatic imagery) match the values of the medium, makinG the news event particularly powerful in its effect. Because of this aliGnment between medium and Genre, and the Genre’s ability to attract larGe audiences, media events demonstrate the relevance of television as a broadcast medium and therefore its potential lonGevity within the diGital mediascape. The Christchurch Earthquake on 22 February 2011 is used as a case study to reveal how TVNZ and TV3 pursued brand recoGnition throuGh the journalistic cultural authority they could obtain by providinG prompt, dramatic and informative rollinG coverage to their audiences. Introduction On 22 February 2011 I was in WellinGton for the day when I received a telephone call tellinG me there had been another siGnificant earthquake at home – and this time people had died. For a couple of hours I tried to contact immediate family members to ensure everyone was safe and then retired to a hotel until I could return to Christchurch the next day. Immediately upon reachinG my hotel room I turned on the television set and spent the next four hours Glued to the coverage. I watched with horror as the once familiar cityscape crumbled in bricKs, dust and tears and the well-Known reporters and anchors from each broadcaster’s news solemnly conveyed the latest information from the studio and on location.

    Young Debt Keith Rankin, 11 April 2015 Three of the stories that attracted my attention this week have been: the near-parity of the New Zealand and Australian dollars (I'm old enough to remember being told that Australian coins – eg florins – were worth significantly less than New Zealand ones, so pass them on quickly); this interview (Working longer is not a retirement plan for baby boomers) on Radio New Zealand's Nine-to-Noon; and the apparent ingratitude on the part of TV3 towards its best broadcasters (John Campbell of Campbell Live – see Save Campbell Live! The Daily Blog 9 April; Why John Campbell's face no longer fits at Mediaworks NZ Herald 10 April – plus the now displaced Firstline crew). The Nine-to-Noon story featured US labour economist Teresa Ghilarducci, suggesting that most older workers should save much more of their incomes than they are saving, because they are unlikely to be able to rely on employment after they are aged 65 to keep them financially afloat. This might be good advice to an individual who could be confident that others in the same situation would not follow that advice. That is the ceteris paribus spirit in which the advice was tendered. The systemic problem is that the precarity of future employment opportunities is due to too little spending by consumers and governments. So, if our 50-somethings collectively (albeit independently) cut back on their present spending, then those weak market forces just get a whole lot weaker, meaning there will be substantially fewer employment opportunities for over-65s than there would be if nobody took the advice.
