Charter schools are public schools that are governed by independent, non-profit school boards. ACADEMICADMISSION REQUIREMENTS — Selective criteria used by some schools to determine a student’s eligibility, such as foreign language readiness or academic performance.

BEFOREAND AFTERCARE — Services provided to students beyond normal school hours. This time is generally used to provide students with extra study time, arts enrichment, or physical education.

GEOGRAPHICPRIORITY - Students are given the opportunity to go to school close to home if they choose to, while giving fair access to studentswho would prefer to go to a school farther from home. Geographic priority is determined by “geographic zones,” a way of splitting up the cityby area. Applicants who live within a 0.5 mile radius of a school will receive priority to 25% of open seats; applicants who reside in a school’s “geographiczone,” will also receive priority to 25% of open seats. The remaining 50% of available seats do not grant geographic priority, to help ensure that families who live further away also have the opportunity to attend.

INCLUSION/INCLUSIVEEDUCATION PRACTICES — Policy of providing services to students with special learning needs, including giftedstudents and speakers of languages other than English, in a general classroom setting. The students are included in the regular education program rather than being separated into special education classes.
