End-Of-Line Hyphenation of Chemical Names (IUPAC Provisional
Pure Appl. Chem. 2020; aop IUPAC Recommendations Albert J. Dijkstra*, Karl-Heinz Hellwich, Richard M. Hartshorn, Jan Reedijk and Erik Szabó End-of-line hyphenation of chemical names (IUPAC Provisional Recommendations) https://doi.org/10.1515/pac-2019-1005 Received October 16, 2019; accepted January 21, 2020 Abstract: Chemical names and in particular systematic chemical names can be so long that, when a manu- script is printed, they have to be hyphenated/divided at the end of a line. Many systematic names already contain hyphens, but sometimes not in a suitable division position. In some cases, using these hyphens as end-of-line divisions can lead to illogical divisions in print, as can also happen when hyphens are added arbi- trarily without considering the ‘chemical’ context. The present document provides recommendations and guidelines for authors of chemical manuscripts, their publishers and editors, on where to divide chemical names at the end of a line and instructions on how to avoid these names being divided at illogical places as often suggested by desk dictionaries. Instead, readability and chemical sense should prevail when authors insert optional hyphens. Accordingly, the software used to convert electronic manuscripts to print can now be programmed to avoid illogical end-of-line hyphenation and thereby save the author much time and annoy- ance when proofreading. The recommendations also allow readers of the printed article to determine which end-of-line hyphens are an integral part of the name and should not be deleted when ‘undividing’ the name. These recommendations may also prove useful in languages other than English. -

FSI: FF Meta Offc Condensed Normal
fontfont opentype® ▪▪▪▪▪▪ fontfont info guide for ff Meta Condensed Normal Offc | Offc Pro or Web | Web Pro Sections a | Font and Designer Information b | Language Support c | Type Specimens section a FONT & DESIGNER INFORMATION Handgloves about ff Meta Condensed Normal ff Meta was originally (1985) conceived as a typeface for use in small point sizes. Against its intended purpose, ff Meta very quickly became one of the most popular typefaces of the computer era, and has been referred to as the Helvetica of the 90s – not necessarily a compliment. It is used a lot in magazines, from the Normal weight in small point sizes for captions up to the Black version for large headlines. Hairline, Thin and Light were added in 2003. Once a publishing house commissioned a Black Condensed for the headlines of a new magazine. It unfortunately ceased publication after a few issues, but ff Meta Black Condensed survived. This version was the basis for the complete Condensed family, digitized by Ole Schäfer. Since headlines need to be bold before anything else, ff Meta Condensed has one additional weight compared with ff Meta: Extra Bold Condensed, which sits between Bold and Black. ff Meta Condensed contains all weights with Old Style as well as Lining Figures, there are fractions, ligatures, kerned lining figures and also the popular Meta arrows. The normal ff Meta already saves more than 12 % of space compared to a regular sans serif. ff Meta Condensed is another 12 % more condensed without being 24 % less readable. about Erik Spiekermann, born 1947, studied History of Art and English in Berlin. -

I. In-Text Citations in Turabian-Style Papers, Superscript Numbers
MAX Center Writing References Turabian Style I. In-Text Citations In Turabian-style papers, superscript numbers (1) are placed at the end of sentences in which a source is used (quotations, paraphrasing, or any other attribution). The source of the citation is then cited in a correspondingly numbered note which provides extended information. These notes can appear as footnotes at the bottom of the page or endnotes in a list at the end of the paper. In most cases, you will also list sources at the end of the paper in a bibliography. The format for these notes is different from the format of bibliography entries. Superscript numbers should appear at the end of the cited material after all punctuation marks, except when the note refers to material before a dash, in which case the superscript should appear after it. Don’t use more than one reference number at a time if a sentence cites multiple sources—instead, use one number and include all citations in a single note. II. Foot- and Endnotes If you choose to use Endnotes instead of footnotes, they should appear on a separate page entitled Notes. Both footnotes and endnotes are formatted as follows: 1. Single Author or Editor Note Number. Author’s (or Editor’s) First and Last Names, Title of Book: Subtitle of Book (Place of Publication: Publisher’s Name, Date of Publication), XX-XX. 2. Multiple Authors Note Number. Author #1’s First and Last Names and Author #2’s First and Last Names, Title of Book: Subtitle of Book (Place of Publication: Publisher’s Name, Date of Publication), XX-XX. -

Consuming Fashions: Typefaces, Ubiquity and Internationalisation
CONSUMING FASHIONS: TYPEFACES, UBIQUITY AND INTERNATIONALISATION Anthony Cahalan School of Design and Architecture University of Canberra ACT ABSTRACT Typefaces are essential to a designer’s ability to communicate visually. The late twentieth century witnessed the democratisation and internationalisation of typeface design and usage due to the ease of access to desktop computer technology and a related exponential growth in the number of typefaces available to users of type. In this paper, theories of fashion, consumption and material culture are used to explain and understand this phenomenon of the proliferation of typefaces. Theories are explored from outside art and design to position typeface designing as an activity, and typefaces as artefacts, within a more comprehensive societal picture than the expected daily professional practice of graphic designers and everyday computer users. This paper also shows that by tracking and thereby understanding the cultural significance of ubiquitous typefaces, it is possible to illustrate the effects of internationalisation in the broader sphere of art and design. CONSUMING FASHIONS: TYPEFACES, UBIQUITY AND INTERNATIONALISATION Technological and stylistic developments in the design, use and reproduction of text since the invention of the alphabet three-and-a-half thousand years ago were exponential in the last two decades of the twentieth century, due significantly to the ready access of designers to the desktop computer and associated software. The parallels between fashion and typefaces—commonly called ‘fonts’— are explored in this paper, with particular reference to theories of fashion, consumption and material culture. This represents the development of a theoretical framework which positions typeface design as an activity, and typefaces as artefacts, within a broader societal picture than the expected daily professional practice of graphic designers and everyday computer users. -
