The petitioner mainly challenges the order dated 23.07.2007 (Annexure P/14) passed by the High Power State Level Caste Scrutiny Committee i.e. respondent No. 3 (for short ‘the Committee’) wherein the petitioner has been found that he does not belong to “Lohar” i.e. Other Backward Class category, and also the subsequent order dated 28.08.2009 (Annexure P/2) wherein on the basis of the order dated 22.09.2008 (Annexure P/1) the petitioner was disqualified for a further period of five years in view of the provisions of section 19(2) of the Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation Act, 1956 (for short 'the Act, 1956'). 2. The facts, in brief, are that the petitioner, in the year 2000, contested the election as Councillor from Ward No. 22, Municipal 2 Corporation, Bhilai, declaring himself as a member of “Lohar” community that comes within OBC category on the basis of social status certificate dated 10.04.2000 (Annexure P/3). -

Cast and Baradri System and Voting Behavior in Pakistan (Elections 2018): A Case Study of Hafizabad District Karim Haider Muhammad Arshad Ali This study scrutinizes the impact of caste and Baradri system on voting behavior evolving from Pakistan’s general elections of 2018. Traditionally, the caste and Baradari system have been playing a substantial role in the elections of Pakistan since its birth especially in the region of Punjab. After the partition the evolution and modernization of electoral system and introduction of democratic institution in Pakistan never fully changed the customary value-system of the society of Punjab which is largely based on caste and Baradari system. With specific reference to caste and Baradari system in Punjab, an analytical research has been made to understand profound origins of Caste and Baradari System and its impact on the voting behavior of four selected constituencies, one of National Assembly and three of Provincial Assembly of Punjab in one of the districts of province of Punjab in general elections of 2018. Further, this study explains that the Punjab is based on social divergence with national political culture; therefore, the people of Punjab always look standing with the authoritarian rule which begins from family system and ends at national politics of Pakistan. Having majority seats in National Assembly the role of Punjab is very important and study about the voting behavior of the people of Punjab has special reference to national politics. Introduction Baradari defined as “brotherhood” initiated by the Persian language word Baradar meaning “brother”. Muslims of south Asian region especially in India and Pakistan, a large number of socialclasses are separated on the origin of Biradaris. -

230 Book Reviews / Asian Journal of Social Science 41 (2013) 219–236 Neeti Nair (2011) Changing Homelands: Hindu Politics and Partition in India. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press. 356 pages. ISBN: 9780674057791. Most of the literature on the partition of India and Pakistan highlights the role of Muslim League and the British colonialists in dividing the Indian peninsula. However in a novel rendition of partition studies, Nair analyses the situation of the minority Punjabi Hindus in the Muslim majority province of Punjab, who as a religious community were otherwise a majority throughout India, during the partition. The partition suddenly rendered the Pun- jabi Hindus alien in their own land. In this revisionist history of the partition, Nair focuses on the social and political history of the Punjab province in India, from the four decades preceding independence to the post- colonial times. She traces the religious and communitarian politics of the Punjabi Hindu minorities and their dynamics of interaction with the British, the Sikhs and the Muslims. Plodding through an unconventional analysis, Nair demonstrates that there was nothing inexorable about the partition of Punjab. Presenting an eventful historical narrative from 1920 onwards, Nair rejects the usual notion that the communal divide between the Hindu and the Muslim led to the partition of India. She also culls the naturalized view that the Muslims were responsible for the partition of India. In fact many of the influential Punjabi Hindu families and leaders actively contrib- uted to the petty politics that led to the partition. However it was not a sinisterly pre-planned decision, as none of these families oversaw the brutal destruction of life and property that followed the partition. -

It is said that Drupadi wife of Pandvas also observed this fast. It so happened once that in order to undergo penance Arjuna went to the Nilgiris and in his absence his brothers were desperate. Sensing their deplorable condition Drupadi remembered Lord Krishna and asked for help. Lord Krishna advised her to observe the fast of Karwa Chauth. She followed the instructions and kept the fast as per rituals which led to Pandavas to overcome the exaspera- tion they were in. LEGEND OF SATYAVAN AND SAVITRI There was a prediction by some astrologers that Savitri would lose her hus- band soon she gets married. The nuptial bonds were tied and time of her hus- bands departure was impending nearer.Yama, the God of Death came to pro- cure Satyavan’s soul which Savitri manifested. She wept bitterly and begged Yama to grant him life but the Death God could not concede to her request ini- tially. Savitri observed the fast vigorously and propitiating gods got the life of her husband revived. THE LEGEND OF KARVA The story is associated with a devout wife Karva who loved her husband fondly and sincerely. One day while bathing, her husband was caught by a ferocious crocodile in shallow waters. Karva came running and had the croc- odile bound with a cotton yarn and went to Yama, the Lord of the Death and requested him to send the offending crocodile to hell. -

CATHOLIC SHRINES IN CHENNAI, INDIA: THE POLITICS OF RENEWAL AND APOSTOLIC LEGACY BY THOMAS CHARLES NAGY A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Victoria University of Wellington (2014) Abstract This thesis investigates the phenomenon of Catholic renewal in India by focussing on various Roman Catholic churches and shrines located in Chennai, a large city in South India where activities concerning saintal revival and shrinal development have taken place in the recent past. The thesis tracks the changing local significance of St. Thomas the Apostle, who according to local legend, was martyred and buried in Chennai. In particular, it details the efforts of the Church hierarchy in Chennai to bring about a revival of devotion to St. Thomas. In doing this, it covers a wide range of issues pertinent to the study of contemporary Indian Christianity, such as Indian Catholic identity, Indian Christian indigeneity and Hindu nationalism, as well as the marketing of St. Thomas and Catholicism within South India. The thesis argues that the Roman Catholic renewal and ―revival‖ of St. Thomas in Chennai is largely a Church-driven hierarchal movement that was specifically initiated for the purpose of Catholic evangelization and missionization in India. Furthermore, it is clear that the local Church‘s strategy of shrinal development and marketing encompasses Catholic parishes and shrines throughout Chennai‘s metropolitan area, and thus, is not just limited to those sites associated with St. Thomas‘s Apostolic legacy. i Acknowledgements This thesis is dedicated to the memory of my father Richard M. -

Country Policy and Information Note Pakistan: Christians and Christian converts Version 4.0 February 2021 Preface Purpose This note provides country of origin information (COI) and analysis of COI for use by Home Office decision makers handling particular types of protection and human rights claims (as set out in the Introduction section). It is not intended to be an exhaustive survey of a particular subject or theme. It is split into two main sections: (1) analysis and assessment of COI and other evidence; and (2) COI. These are explained in more detail below. Assessment This section analyses the evidence relevant to this note – i.e. the COI section; refugee/human rights laws and policies; and applicable caselaw – by describing this and its inter-relationships, and provides an assessment of, in general, whether one or more of the following applies: x A person is reasonably likely to face a real risk of persecution or serious harm x The general humanitarian situation is so severe as to breach Article 15(b) of European Council Directive 2004/83/EC (the Qualification Directive) / Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights as transposed in paragraph 339C and 339CA(iii) of the Immigration Rules x The security situation presents a real risk to a civilian’s life or person such that it would breach Article 15(c) of the Qualification Directive as transposed in paragraph 339C and 339CA(iv) of the Immigration Rules x A person is able to obtain protection from the state (or quasi state bodies) x A person is reasonably able to relocate within a country or territory x A claim is likely to justify granting asylum, humanitarian protection or other form of leave, and x If a claim is refused, it is likely or unlikely to be certifiable as ‘clearly unfounded’ under section 94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. -
