WELCOME to the LBC!

Thank you so much for choosing to attend tonight’s performance. We are always striving to offer the best variety of performances, and the best service to our customers, and hope your experience is a fantastic one. Don’t hesitate to alert one of our front-of-house staff if there is something we can do to improve your experience.

Here are a few highlights from the results of our successful 2015-16 season:

• More than 140,000 people attended a performance here; • More than 36,000 children took part in one of our Education Through the Arts programs (that’s a 28% increase over the previous year); • More than 400 musical instruments were loaned to area students through our Music for Schools lending library; these low-income students would not otherwise have been able to participate in their school’s band or orchestra program; • We expanded our Mariachi Camp to Cloverdale, and also conducted a special ukulele project at Bellevue Elementary.

This is just a sampling of our work in the community, and none of it would be possible without the support of our members, donors, and sponsors. Due to the significant need and interest for these types of free and subsidized programs in our community, we are pleased to launch the LBC Arts and Education Fund, which will help provide vital funding to these unique programs. Turn to page 36 to see how a small monthly donation can make a big impact right here in our community.

Thank you again for your patronage and please enjoy the performance!

WED Kip Moore with special guest 4.26 Levi Hummon 8PM

Kip Moore has built one of country music's most loyal audiences. His live show mixes the bombast and wild desperation of Bruce Springsteen with the rootsy stomp of Merle Haggard.

Multi-PLATINUM singer/songwriter Kip Moore wrapped up 2016 with a string of sold-out headlining dates. Playing to capacity crowds in Detroit, MI and a two-night run in Chicago, IL, Moore executed 20 sold-out shows during his ME & MY KIND TOUR, that showcased him as "one of country music’s most impressive headline acts” (Sounds Like Nashville), praised by critics and fans across the country. Moore held up his “reputation for rowdy, high- energy party shows” (Detroit Free Press) as he was continually "met with more deafening applause.” (CMT)

Moore charged into 2016 on the 2nd leg of his fiercely successful WILD ONES TOUR, that he also unleashed across the pond for a stint of “eagerly anticipated” (Think Country) headlining sold-out dates in the UK and Ireland. An unabating road warrior, Moore "cemented that special bond between crowd and performer…daring to be different, daring to take a risk, he is able to take the crowd further than most artists can by the sheer force of his performance” (2 Country Radio) during his time overseas, where he had to move to bigger venues to meet overwhelming demand. Fans were also able to catch the “kinetic live performer” (Kansas City Star) out on Miranda Lambert’s KEEPER OF THE FLAME TOUR during the summer.

Kip Moore has built one of country music's most loyal audiences. His debut album UP ALL NIGHT which was certified GOLD by the RIAA and spawned three Number One hit singles including GOLD certified “Beer Money,” PLATINUM certified "Hey Pretty Girl," and the DOUBLE PLATINUM breakout hit "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck.” Moore recently released UNDERGROUND, a 5-track EP that draws inspiration from his unyielding time out on the road touring. His live show mixes the bombast and wild desperation of Bruce Springsteen with the rootsy stomp of Merle Haggard – don’t miss his LBC debut! FEATURED PERFORMANCES 19

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre- eminent humor writers.

David Sedaris is the author of and , as well as collections of personal essays, , , Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and his most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, each of which became an immediate bestseller. SAT Live Nation presents Lewis Black: 5.13 The Rant, White, and Blue Tour 8PM

Following the highly successful 2016 Fall leg of his THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES: THE NAKED TRUTH TOUR, Lewis Black brings THE RANT, WHITE & BLUE TOUR to Sonoma County this Spring.

Lewis is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today and executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. He is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Lewis has appeared frequently on The Daily Show with a weekly “Back in Black” rant, on Comedy Central, and has also filmed two HBO specials. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black. A much sought after guest for late-night television shows, he’s been seen on Larry King Live, Late Night with Conan O’Brian, The Late Show with David Letterman, CNN and MSNBC, among others.

In the midst of a rigorous 200-night touring schedule around the world, regular TV appearances and movie roles, Lewis has written three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). As a playwright Lewis has also penned over 40 plays, many of which have been produced around the country. He has co-starred with Robin Williams in Barry Levinson’s “Man of the Year,” Steve Pink’s “Accepted,” and Paul Feig’s “Unaccompanied Minors.” He also lent his voice to the role of “Jimmy” in Bob Sagat’s parody, “Farce of the Penguins.” In his leisure time, Lewis likes to play golf, even though golf hates him. 22 2017 PROGRAM Luther Burbank Center for the Arts | APRIL – JULY

SUN 5.14 Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán 3PM

Founded in 1898, Mariachi Vargas emerged as one of the most celebrated mariachi groups, and acquired national success upon its presentation at the inaugural celebration of President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1934.

Musical director Rubén Fuentes (who joined the group in 1944) would go on to arrange music for many of 's celebrated singers and composers such as Lola Beltrán, Pedro Infante and José Alfredo Jiménez. The band's seminal work throughout the coming decades set the tone for many mariachi ensembles by insisting that all of the group's musicians know how to read music, resulting in a more refined and trained ensemble. Credited with modernizing the genre, Mariachi Vargas' meticulously crafted arrangements helped to propel the national pride for what would become Mexico's classical sound.

Mariachi Vargas became renowned as the definitive mariachi ensemble, and its classic sound has won the group numerous awards and accolades, including the title of "World's Best Mariachi" since the 1950s. The band actively participates in international mariachi festivals in order to promote the pride of the genre and encourage young mariachis to pursue lifelong careers.

Recently, the Grand Opera turned to the ensemble’s legendary leader, Jose “Pepe” Martinez, to write the score and collaborate with librettist Leonard Foglia in creating the world’s first mariachi opera, “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” (“To Cross the Face of the Moon”), which premiered to sold-out houses in , Houston, Chicago and !

Currently, Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan continues to record and tour internationally. FEATURED PERFORMANCES 23

WED Mills Entertainment Presents 6.14 #IMOMSOHARD 8PM Mom’s Night out: Summer Break Tour

#IMomSoHard is a popular web series on Facebook where two best friends, who happen to be moms, talk the good, the bad, and the funny about motherhood.

This summer, Jen and Kristin are taking their show out of the playroom and onto the road. But this time, they’re bringing the kids. And a tour bus (you didn’t think they’d leave them with their husbands, did you?).

There’s no one making moms feel as uncomfortably normal as Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, the hilarious, oh-so-real women behind #IMomSoHard. With over 675,000 Facebook fans, and more than 55 million views of their web series, Jen and Kristin’s blend of honesty and humor offer the kinds of levity most of us only get from our therapist, proving that if we weren’t all laughing, we’d be crying, right? Right!? Sure to deliver the kind of straight talk you can only get from discussing body hair in the kids’ playroom while sipping mimosas, Kristin and Jen prove you can’t make this shi*t up.

It’s like an evening with two of your besties. But funnier. And probably with more drinking. Definitely more drinking.

“He is one of my favorite, favorite stand-up comedians.” – Jerry Seinfeld

INTRODUCING THE NEW LBC Arts & Education Fund

Make a gift to the LBC Arts & Education Fund and know that your donation is going directly to support programs benefitting more than 35,000 local children, and their teachers and parents.

Here are just a few examples of the impact these programs have each year:

More than 450 musical instruments loaned through our Music for Schools library, enabling low-income students to participate in their school’s band or orchestra programs;

Each summer, 150 underserved youth engage in creative self-expression and forge positive connections with their peers, families, and cultural heritage through One City Arts and Mariachi Camps;

17,000+ free and reduced-price tickets issued to low-income students, ensuring that they can attend performances along with the rest of their classmates – for many, it is their first time in a theater;

Dozens of teachers in Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Napa, and Marin counties integrate the arts into their classrooms, strengthening the learning of core subjects like math, science, and literature.

Integrating the Arts into my classroom has made my “ students deeper thinkers. The LBC’s excellent trainings are affecting the education of hundreds and hundreds of students each year. – Bonnie” Raines, 3rd Grade Teacher, Santa Rosa LBC ARTS & EDUCATION FUND 37

Visual Art at the LBC

Luther Burbank Center for the Arts has long been committed to the presentation of contemporary visual art.

The Center’s expansive campus currently features works by fourteen local and regional artists, including Robert Ellison, Dennis Leon, Diana Meehan, and Roberto Santo.

In 2015, the Center opened a free, outdoor Sculpture Garden that serves as transition between the LBC and the Sutter Hospital campus. The current exhibit in the Sculpture Garden, “Root 101” by Bruce Johnson, is comprised of colossal wood sculptures made from salvaged old growth redwood, which he has been working with for 50 years.

STUDENT ARTWORK

As you find your way to balcony seating, we hope you enjoy the student artwork hanging in the North corridor, outside our administrative offices on the 2nd floor. This exhibit showcases the work of young artists, shares insight into the creative voice of the next generation and demonstrates the importance of art classes in our schools. ART EXHIBITS 43

Help Make Volunteer the Magic Happen Today!

From ushering at a performance to working with students through our education and outreach programs, our 200-plus volunteers provide vital service to the Center and bring enrichment of the arts to our community.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Over 20 Years of Dedication (x2)!

Myrna first discovered what Luther Burbank Center for the Arts was doing for the community, as a teacher and administrator at a school held on the Center’s campus. Twenty four years later, she and her husband Gil are both dedicated volunteers.

Myrna began working with the Guild (concessions) and Gil attended a performance as her spouse. Being retired from the California Department of Forestry, Gil helped his wife set up the coffee service several times, then decided to make it official and became a volunteer too. Today, Myrna is an usher for school shows and both Gil and Myrna usher at evening performances. As volunteer ushers taking tickets, helping patrons find their seats and welcoming all who attend a performance, you may see Gil or Myrna at the Center today!

“I’m delighted the LBC offers this opportunity to the ladies and gentlemen of the community,” Myrna says. “The ushers are like a family. Over 24 years, you get to know everybody. When you do it for that long, it becomes a part of your life.” Gil and Myrna both enjoy doing a service for their community, “because LBC is a service to the community. Doing something good, we get a lot back, including making friends.”

Aside from their countless hours devoted to the Center, Myrna also volunteers in a classroom at Luther Burbank Elementary School, and at The Living Room, which serves homeless and at-risk women and their children. When not volunteering, the Werders travel and have been to 60+ countries. They’ve backpacked across Europe several times, and belong to Friendship Force, a cultural exchange club started during the Carter Administration. They are able to stay as guests in people’s homes around the world, and become fully immersed in the culture. Gil enjoys planning all the details of their trips and just like here at the Center, they both enjoy meeting new people. Their favorite part of volunteering at the Center is being able to meet people of the community. “It’s a cultural experience right there! It really is a fun thing to do,” Myrna exclaims.

We’re happy they chose the LBC as one of their cultural endeavors. If you happen to see Gil or Myrna at a performance, be sure to join us in saying ”thank you” for their MANY years of dedicated service!

For information on becoming a volunteer at Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, visit lutherburbankcenter.org and click on “Volunteer Today.”

THE LAMONA JOHNSON WALRAVEN LEGACY SOCIETY

See your investment in the LBC

Lamona Johnson Walraven, a longtime Santa Rosa resident, was a high school teacher and counselor who came of age at a time when most women did not pursue higher education.

She earned a master’s degree from UC Berkeley, then shared her love for

learning with her family and students, believing that all would thrive through

the benefits of an education. Through her

bequest, Lamona left a lasting impact on

Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, with the

largest legacy gift ever received, benefitting

both girls and boys through her largesse. PLANNED GIVING 57
