Chapter One Introduction
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1.Background of Study Japan has so many traditions of folklore that had inherited for generation whether in story form or in tradition form. With some creativity and existing technology that they had, some Japanese filmmaker has succeeded by making some Japanese folklore into more interesting form and well known by people whether inside Japan or outside Japan. According to Kitayama “Folklore is a stories shared by folk people from the past and these stories are similar to myths, except that they are related more to human matters than to supernatural beings” (Kitayama 2005: 85) By this quotation the writer argue that folklore is cultural product which is produced by people in the past and it is contained of myth and usually, the society will connect the folklore to supernatural even more to human matters. As emphasized by Lindahl, Although many people regard a “folktale” as a fictional form, I use the term here to apply to any traditional tale, whether its tellers consider it true, or false, or both. Thus, the scope of the tale extends far beyond fiction to encompass belief tales, personal experience stories, and accounts of major historical events (Lindahl, 2004: 200). Based on the quotation above, the writer argues that folklore acknowledges the practice of labeling narratives based on the element of belief, he also realizes the inherent story within each and the tendency of storytellers to use a little fiction and a little nonfiction in crafting their stories. Lindahl uses this terminology to put the focus on the storytellers themselves and help the reader to recognize the relationship between tale and teller. -

Anime and Historical Inversion in Miyazaki Hayao’s Princess Mononoke John A. Tucker East Carolina University Introduction If box office receipts are any indication of cultural significance, then Miyazaki Hayao’s Princess Mononoke (Mononokehime, 1997) surely stands as one of the most important works of late-twentieth-century Japanese popular culture: currently it remains the highest-grossing (¥16.65 billion, approximately $150 million) domestic film in Japanese history. Prior to the release of The Titanic, Princess Mononoke eclipsed E.T. and reigned as the biggest box-office hit ever, domestic or foreign, in Japan. While The Titanic has since surpassed Princess Mononoke in overall ticket sales, over 13.53 million Japanese, or more than one-tenth of the population, have watched Princess Mononoke in theatres, and over five million copies of the video have been sold domestically (Yoneda, 204). Princess Mononoke also stands as the most expensive animated movie ever made in Japan, with a 3 billion yen (approximately $30 million) production cost (Wakita et al., 168). Critics have lauded it in literally hundreds of media reviews, especially in Japanese film and popular culture publications such as Kinema junpō, SAPIO, Nyūmedeia, AERA, uirumumeekaazu, Bessatsu Comicbox, Bessatsu Takarajima, Tech Win, Shunkan Kinyōbi, Video Doo!, Yurika, Cinema Talk, and SPA!, as well as in the major newspapers, periodicals, and regional media. Additionally, Princess Mononoke has been awarded numerous prizes, most notably the 21st Japan Academy Award for Best Film (Kuji, 3-4; Schilling, 3). Not surprisingly the film has been released internationally, with an English language version, featuring numerous familiar American voices, including that of Gillian Anderson and Billy Bob Thornton, thus making it exceptionally accessible in the United States for anime fans, and those interested in Japanese history and culture. -

Tarongers 4 46022 València Tel. ++34 605288430 Published in Animation: an Interdisciplinary Journal, 9(1). 2014 Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the relationship between Japanese folktales and Japanese anime as a genre, especially how the intertextuality with traditional tales and myth subvert its conventional use. To meet this goal I have used Toriyama’s successful Dragon Ball series, which has enjoyed continued popularity right from its first publication in the 1980s. I analyse the parallelism between Dragon Ball and a classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, its main source. However, there are many other folkloric references present in Dragon Ball connected to religion and folktales. The author illustrates this relationship with examples taken from the anime that correspond to the traditional Japanese Folklore but that are used with a subversive goal which makes it a rich source for analysis and for Literary Education. The Earliest Societies in Japan
CHAPTER 1 THE EARLIEST SOCIETIES IN JAPAN Japan's oldest extant chronicles, the Kojiki and the Nihon shoki, de- scribe the trek of Kamu-yamato-ihare-biko no Mikoto from south Kyushu to the Yamato plain accompanied by hand-chosen clan (uji) heads. He is referred to by later historians as the first emperor, posthu- mously called Jimmu. At every step he was opposed by well-entrenched people whose conquest often required ingenuity and guile. The degree of their decimation seems to have been determined by the degree of their physical abnormality. For the bulk of his adversaries, the killing of their chiefs was all that was needed to bring them into line. But in extreme cases, such as the Tsuchigumo (earth spiders) who were people too primitive even to have responsible chiefs, pockets had to be elimi- nated by a process that was not completed until at least the time of the ruler Keikd, sometime in the fourth century A.D. When the physical and social differences were too great, it seems that assimilation was inconceivable and neighborly relations impossible. These stories may look at first like an unnecessarily candid admis- sion of the presence of other peoples, as the Eight Island Country of Japan was implicitly created for the enjoyment of the descendants of the Sun Goddess (Amaterasu). But by stressing the existence of oth- ers, the chosen were sharply distinguished from the undeserving, and the Yamato people could legitimately place themselves at the top of a scaled social ladder. The right to rule was therefore not predicated on prior occupation or existing status but on the act of divine creation. -

FROM TEXT TO IMAGE IN JAPANESE ART Course: 01:565:483 “From Text to Image in Japanese Art” Rutgers University, Spring 2017 Lecture: MTh2 (9:50-11:10) AB1100 Instructor: Haruko Wakabayashi [email protected] Office Hours: Scott Hall Rm 325, TH 11:30 – 1:00 or by appointment Catalogue Description: Explores the profound influence of classical literature on the arts of Japan, especially painting. Analysis of the historical and literary meaning of the literary works; investigation of the fusion of text and image. Course Description: This interdisciplinary course explores the profound influence of classical literature on the arts of Japan. During a thousand years, from the Heian to Tokugawa periods (794-1868), artists transformed into visual images both the emotions and the events described in the myths, legends, poetry, courtly novels, and war chronicles. Literary works were adapted to different formats—handscrolls, hanging scrolls, screens, and prints—as they became an integral, indivisible aspect of the arts that expressed the aesthetic of different social groups— aristocrats, shoguns, and urban bourgeoisie. We will read widely across many different genres of classical literature and their visual representations, and investigate how the fusion of text and image created unique masterpieces of Japanese art. The course is constituted of three modules: (1) Spreading Faith: Miraculous Tales of Buddhist and Shinto Gods (2) Courtly Elegance: Literary Traditions from the Classical Age (3) Warrior Heroes: Tales of Battles and Demon-Quelling Adventures Graduate students will be assigned extra reading (typically a scholarly journal article or book chapter) and a final research paper. Requirements: (1) Each week will consist of a lecture and a discussion session.
