The Ezekiel Cullen DRT Chapter is very fortunate because it owns the magnificent Cullen House in San Augustine, the second oldest town in Texas (Nacogdoches being oldest). Built in 1839 by noted architect Augustus Phelps, it eventually became the home of Judge Ezekiel Cullen, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas, and a member of the 3rd Congress. The house was presented to to the Ezekiel Cullen Chapter of DRT, San Augustine, in 1953 by Hugh Roy Cullen, grandson of Ezekiel Cullen. The home is the headquarters for the Ezekiel Cullen Chapter, DRT. The chapter was organized in 1953 with 101 charter members. They currently have 88 active members. In September, 1984, the Cullen Foundation presented $250,000 to the Ezekiel Cullen Chapter to be used for the upkeep of the home and grounds. It is used as an historical events center and museum in the community, as well as for social occasions and meeting place for the chapter. The Cullen House also contains a collection of paintings by the renowned portrait artist, S. Seymour Thomas, a native of San Augustine. Antiques and historical furnishings are on display in the home. A docent is present to tour groups and individuals during February through mid-December, Thursday through Saturday, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., and by special appointment. Texian Navy Day Celebration DRT celebrates Texian Navy Day, September 15, 2012 both at the Battleship Texas and a lunch- eon in Corpus Christi. Dr. Betty Edwards, 4th VPG represented DRT on the Battleship Texas September 15, 2012 to assist David Hanover, President General of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, lay a wreath in honor of Texian Navy Day. The Battleship Texas, launched in 1914, was given to Texas by the Navy in 1948 and is the oldest remaining dreadnought battleship. In the Pacific during WWII it saw 50 straight of battle and provided naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The ship belongs to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and during a Legislative hearing on October 18, 2012 that I attended they reported that it will cost between 40 and 60 million dollars to dry dock the ship. The Texas Legislature has already voted to leave the ship where it is, but experts report it will sink if something isn't done. It is a major problem, and the State is along way from solving the problem. To visit the San Jacinto Battlefield is still free but it cost to tour the Battleship Texas. The Clara Driscoll Chapter members and guests observed Texian Navy Day with a luncheon at the Corpus Christi Water Street Seafood Company. Members attending were Alice Nixon, Anita Eisen- hauer, guest Joyce Chase, Dorothy Coffin, Theresa Baucum, Laura Berry and Janey Cone. Also in September, the Chapter celebrated Texas Heroes Day by donating three Texas history children's books to the Ellis Memorial Library in Port Aransas, Texas. These repairs were identified about five years ago in a report DRT commissioned. DRT did have the money for the Alamo roof repair when the legislature gave the custodianship and oversight to the GLO.
