If you enjoyed the book or movie Pollyanna, you will find this a wonderful continuation of the story.By Phyllis DorringtonI loved the movie as a child, and found the book to be beautifully written. Porter's novel is much richer than the movie with its depth of character and its message. The book challenges us to step outside of our preconceived boxes and treat all with respect. I read it on the plane to the east coast and found myself smiling and shedding tears of both joy and sadness. Well worth reading.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good SequelBy S. DavisI had never read the Pollyanna stories before. I had seen the Disney adaptation, but not read the books. I didn't even know that there was a second book. I'm no youngster, but I thoroughly enjoyed these books. The original, of course, was the best; but the sequel was very good, too. I'm "glad" that they didn't try to bring Pollyanna's "game" too much into the story. She's 20 years old when this book takes place. I loved the characters and the "mystery" of Jamie's identity. I enjoyed the original Pollyanna. It had some events like the Disney movie, but it went deeper into personalities, etc. This sequel was well written, and even had some romance. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fifty years after the Disney Movie, I finally meet the real Pollyanna!By Baird-GreeneI loved the Disney film with Hayley Mills based on this book. I recently saw the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation where Pollyanna's story is moved to England. Finally, I decided to read the book. This edition is a bit odd in that the copyright date is given as 2009. Pollyanna was originally published in 1913. I wish there had been a foreword about the book with information about the author. This edition is just the book with nothing added or taken away. The cover drawing is not credited. If I'd done it, I'd not want anyone to know. It's frankly hideous and makes Pollyanna look like a goblin. All that aside, for a children's book that was written over a century ago, I adored the story of Pollyanna. It held my interest, was well-written, and had excellent character development. Pollyanna and her "glad game" change everyone who is fortunate enough to know her. When tragedy strikes, all the people whose lives she's brightened, come to Miss Polly to let her know how much Pollyanna means to them and how her enthusiasm and gratitude expressed in the "glad game" have changed their lives. There is a happy ending for everyone. It's too bad that the word "Pollyanna" has come to mean a foolish optimist. The world needs more Pollyannas. I highly recommend this book. When Pollyanna Whittier goes to live with her sourtempered aunt after her father's death, things seem bad enough, but then a dreadful accident ensues. However, Pollyanna's sunny nature and good humour prove to have an astonishing effect on all around her, and this wonderful tale of how cheerfulness can conquer adversity has remained one of the world's most popular children's books since its first publication in 1913. In Pollyanna Grows Up, the only sequel written by Porter herself, Pollyanna finds that that, despite being cured of her health problems, adulthood brings fresh challenges to be overcome. About the AuthorEleanor Porter started as a singer. Her writing was so wonderful, that magazines lined up to print her works. She started novels and plays.
