Many Old (and New) Friends Coming to Budapest The GENACIS workshop in Budapest will be one of the best-attended workshops in recent years. Thanks to travel funds in the new GENACIS grant, and additional support from the KBS organizing committee, a number of members from WHO- and PAHO-funded countries will be able to participate. They include Julio Bejarano (Costa Rica), Vivek Benegal (India), Akan Ibanga (Nigeria/UK), Florence Kerr-Correa (Brazil), Raquel Magri (Uruguay), Myriam Munné (Argentina), Martha Romero (Mexico), and Nazarius Tumwesigye (Uganda). (We apologize if we have forgotten someone!) Several new members will also join us. Among them are Jennie Connor (New Zealand), Danielle Edouard (France), Maria Lima (Brazil) , and guest Nancy Poole (Canada). We are all looking forward to meeting many old and new friends soon in Budapest. One is a series of overview presentations that will summarize major findings to date in the various GENACIS components. The overviews will be presented by Kim Bloomfield (EU countries), Isidore Obot (WHO-funded countries), Maristela Monteiro (PAHO-funded countries), and Sharon Wilsnack (other countries). Robin Room will provide a synthesis of findings from the various components. Buda Cast l e Quart er H i st or y The Cast l e Quart er Várnegyed (Castle Quarter) - Located within the defensive walls of the Buda Ca s t le Complex - Located on the Varhegy (Castle Mount) which rises 50-60m above the Danube - The northern part contains the Var (Old Town ) - The south contains the Royal Palace (Buda castle) - The oldest part of Budapest and houses many historic monuments and colourful houses - UNESCO heritage site (1987) Buda Cast l e (Budavari Pal ot a) - The first fortress of Budapest, built during the 13th century - It has been built and destroyed multiple times - Now contains: National Széchényi Library, Budapest history Museum, Hungarian national gallery - 1400’s - King Matthias Corvinus married Beatrice of Naples - Italian humanists arrived in the city → Palace was rebuilt in renaissance style - only fragments of this design remain: red marble balustrades, decorative glazed tiles - Ottoman Empire - it was left to decay by the Ottomans - was mostly used as a storage facility for ammunitions - 1686 - the Great Siege - Buda was captured by the Christian forces - the palace collapsed due to heavy bombardment amplified by the ammunition which remained on the site - During the Habsburg rule, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor ordered most of the remains of the building to be destroyed (1715) - Between 1715 and 1860 the palace was destroyed and rebuilt various times - Franz Joseph (King of Hungary 1867) - The building was reconstructed in a neoclassical baroque style - served as a place for ceremonies during the reign of King Franz Joseph - WW2 - Buda Castle was the last major stronghold of Budapest held by Axis Forces during the siege of Budapest (29 Dec 1944 - 13 February 1945) - Thus Soviet blockade/shelling on 11 February 1945 left the palace in ruins - Palace rebuilt by 1966, with some modernisation and some re-construction of remaining elements. -

HISTORY OF BUDAPEST Budapest, the capital of the Hungarian People's Republic, lies in the Carpathian Basin, at latitude 47°28' north and longitude 19°08' east. The Danube is one of the most important waterways of Europe. A 28-km stretch of the River Danube divides Buda on the right bank from Pest on the left. Buda is built on a number of hills, with its highest point 529 m. above sea level. Pest lies on level ground that forms part of the Great Hungarian Plain. The Danube at Budapest is a busy waterway, varying in width from 300 to 600 m. and enclosing five islands, of which Csepel in the south of the city is the largest. The city has several medicinal springs, some thermal. Budapest is today the second most populous city in central Europe. Its 2,089,533 inhabitants in 1978 made up 19,6% of Hungary's population and included 27,8% of the country's industrial workforce. The city's area is 525.20 sq.km., two-thirds of which are on the Pest side of the river. The development plan approved by the Hungarian Council of Ministers in 1971 regards 44 communities outside the city boundaries as parts of the Budapest conurbation. Archaeological discoveries confirm that there have been important settlements on the site of present-day Budapest for thousands of years. Celtic tribes settled on both banks of the Danube in the 3rd century BC. After the conquest of Pannonia, the Romans in the last decades BC built the town of Aquincum on the site of the Celtic settlement of Ak-ink, on the right bank of the river. -

Activities in Budapest Sights to see 1) The Buda castle A must-see for everyone who visits the Hungarian capital. Besides its romantic streets, shops and cafés, the castle includes famous buildings such as the Matthias Church, the Fisherman’s bastion, or the National Gallery. Bus 16 takes you up to the castle, but you can also decide to walk from Clark Ádám Square – or take the unique funicular from there. 2) Gellért hill Gellért Hill is one of the top tourist attractions of the city thanks to the magnificent panorama from the top of its cliffs facing the Danube. You can climb the hill from two sides: take the stairs by the waterfall at Elizabeth Bridge, or take the gradual, but somewhat longer pathway by the Gellért Bath. 3) St. Stephan’s Basilica Located near to Deák Ferenc Square, St. Stephan’s Basilica is one of the most beautiful and monumental churches of Hungary. Here is found the ‘Holy Right’, a mummified right hand dedicated to St. Stephan, the first king of Hungary. 4) Heroes Square and Városliget Heroes Square with the statues of the most famous figures of Hungarian history is among the most popular sights of Budapest. Beyond the Square lies Városliget, the big city park of Budapest, which also includes the Vajdahunyad castle and the Széchényi thermal bath. To get there, take bus 105 or Metro line 1 (Földalatti) from Deák Ferenc tér. 5) Opera House The Hungarian State Opera is the masterpiece of Miklós Ybl, one of the greatest Hungarian architects of all time. The Opera was opened in 1884.
