I can be a Golden Gloves fighter, but where do I start?” This guide will help any potential “Glover” on the road to next year’s tournament.

Who can be a Golden Gloves Boxer? ELIGIBILITY: The Indiana Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament is open to all Indiana residents between ages 17 and 40 who are in good health and have never boxed professionally.

Where do I fit In? DIVISIONS: The Golden Gloves groups fighters by the amount of experience each fighter brings to the tournament: Sub-Novice: Ages 18 - 21 years old with less than five fights Jr. Open: Ages 22 - 40 years old with less than four fights Novice: Ages 18 - 40 years old with four or more fights or having won a Sub-Novice title Open: Ages 18 - 40 years old with five or more fights or having won a Novice or Jr. Open title

Where do I go for training? TRAINING: The State of Indiana is blessed with many fine boxing clubs, coaches and trainers (see list on page 14). These men and women provide a great source of talent and experience to boxers around the state, helping to teach, train and evaluate skill levels. VOLUNTEERING: Volunteers are always welcome. Facts, Figures Indiana Golden Gloves is celebrating its 85th birthday this year. The franchise was born in 1933, with 136 boxers competing in Tomlinson Hall. In 1934, the show moved to the Northside Armory, now Tyndall Armory. Indiana Central (now the University of Indianapolis), Market Square Arena, the Convention Center and the State Fairgrounds have also hosted the event. 5134 E. 65th St. Indiana finished third, third and second in the national tournament in the early 1970s. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 251 Pennsylvania Parkway, just northeast of 465 and Meridian Street, in Indianapolis.

The initial Hall of Fame class includes: Marvin Johnson, a three-time light-heavyweight world champion; Tony Zale, a middleweight world champion; Lamon Brewster, a heavyweight champion; George DeFabis, fighter, ref, former president, National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame member and long-time Indiana Golden Gloves ringside face; and Fred Berns, legendary Indiana boxing promoter.
