Born and raised in Manchester, Fury weighed just 1lb at birth after being born three months premature. His father John named him after Mike Tyson. From Irish traveller heritage, the“Gypsy King” is undefeated in 28 professional fights, winning 27 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. His most famous victory came in 2015, when he stunned longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles. He was forced to vacate the belts because of issues with drugs, alcohol and mental health, and did not fight again for more than two years. Most thought he was done with boxing forever. Until an amazing comeback fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. It was an instant classic, ending in a split decision tie. Outside of the ring, Tyson Fury is a mental health ambassador. He donated his million dollar purse from the Deontay Wilder fight to the homeless. This book is dedicated to the cause of mental health awareness. -

Gloria Allred Statement
Contact: Gloria Allred (323) 653-6530 E-mail: [email protected] Today, we are on the agenda of the California State Athletic Commission to appeal a decision by fight officials to stop Christy Martin’s last fight against Dakota Stone at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 4, 2011. We will argue that a discriminatory double standard, based on gender and sexual stereotyping, played a major role in the decision to terminate the bout, resulting in depriving Christy Martin of her 50th victory in a professional boxing match. Christy Martin is the Women’s Super Welterweight Boxing Champion of the world. She was the first woman athlete in any sport to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Last November, her then husband is alleged to have attempted to murder her by stabbing her, shooting her and pistol whipping her. He 1 has been arrested and is in custody, awaiting trial in October on a charge of attempted murder. Despite this horrific experience, Christy was determined to continue to fight and win her 50th victory. After being released from the hospital, she began intensive training and the fight that she had hoped to win finally took place on June 4, 2011 against Dakota Stone. This was not the first bout between Ms. Martin and Ms. Stone. In fact, Ms. Martin had soundly beaten Ms. Stone on September 9, 2009 and Ms. Martin actually did so with a broken hand. In the June 4, 2011 fight, in the fourth round and with Christy ahead, Ms. Martin suffered an apparent hand injury to her right hand; however, she continued to fight hard for the rest of the round and used her right hand a number of times. -

Every hour, a different expert hosts some form of guerrilla counseling on TV. It's because of all this competition that daytime- television experts now resemble academics in specialization. On the talk shows, there aren't just adultery experts, there are commentators for every form of illicit intercourse. This year alone I've seen two men and a woman who specialize in my-wife-slept-with-my-daughter's-boyfriend-who-is-a- high-school-quarterback cases. I've always assumed these pundits chose their fields for some autobiographical reason. So, a few days after Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield, I offered a half-dozen talk shows my services as a "biting expert." I'm someone who knows a lot, I said on their voice mail, about "chomping on flesh under extreme stress." Anxious for a cannibal, three panting producers called me back within two hours. I shared with them the story of how, in an unfortunate incident at summer camp when I was 11, the other cabin nerd tried to push my head into a toilet. With my forehead just inches from the water, I did the only thing I could think of: I lifted my head up and bit him on the cheek. -

Studies in Arts and Humanities VOL07/ISSUE01/2021 ARTICLE | sahjournal.com Honour and Shame in Women’s Sports Katie Liston School of Sport, Ulster University Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland © Katie Liston. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/. Abstract This piece, first delivered as a keynote address, examines the role of honour and shame in understanding the many stories of women's involvement in sport in Ireland from the eighteenth century onwards, and especially in the modern era. While women's sporting involvement was regarded as shameful, especially in those sports imbued with traditional associated masculine norms, the prospect for women's sports is different today than in the past. Yet the struggle for honour is ongoing, seen in topical debates concerning gender quotas and the recommendations made by the Citizens Assembly on gender equality. Bringing the analysis up to date, the piece outlines hoc policy initiatives around gender equality in sport from the mid-2000s (in which the author was centrally involved) to the publication of the first formal statutory policy on women in sport, in 2019. Here it is argued that the guilt and shame of previous generations has influenced the public debate on gender quotas and it is as if, in the desire for perceived equality, the current generation of sportswomen do not wish to be associated with quotas. In this way, honour is conflated with merit. The piece concludes by suggesting that merit is honourable, personally, but equally, quotas are by no means shameful in public struggles. -
American Heavyweight Star Eddie Chambers Joins Team Fury Promotions
AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT STAR EDDIE CHAMBERS JOINS TEAM FURY PROMOTIONS MANCHESTER (Jan. 14) – American heavyweight hitman Eddie Chambers has joined Team Fury Promotions and will be trained by the renowned Peter Fury. The Philadelphian bruiser turned professional in 2000 at just 18 and has amassed a record of 40 fights with 36 wins and only four defeats. At 31 he has been in with some of the leading names in the heavyweight division including IBF, WBA and WBO world champion Wladimir Klitschko, as well as going the distance with Alexander Povetkin and Tomasz Adamek. He now joins the stable of rising heavyweight sensations Tyson Fury and Hughie Fury, who have made huge strides in recent times under the tutelage of Peter Fury. After falling just short of world title glory, Chambers, a former cruiserweight, is now aiming to go one step further by capturing such honour at heavyweight with Team Fury. Eddie Chambers, said: “I am happy to be part of Team Fury Promotions. Being with Peter Fury and part of Team Fury is going to take me to the level Peter knows I’m capable of. They have the right resources and boxing knowledge that I feel has been missing in my career so far. I’ve had some great trainers in the past, however, I think with Peter’s great knowledge in the ring and also his business knowledge out of the ring, it gives me the confidence and inspiration I need to believe us as a team can do big things. I can’t wait to fight in the UK for all the boxing fans there.
