By Sgt. Rick Lynch by JOC Bill Reed Woolsey arrived Acting Secretary of the Navy, the at the Ground I decided last weekend to explore some of the wildlife native to Gitmo. Defense Force Headquarters Honorable Mr. R. James Woolsey, at 10:3 0 So, with trusty bottle of meat tenderizer in hand, I was up early in a.m. He was greeted paid a visit to Guantanamo Bay by Colonel pursuit of the mysterious iguana. They say if you can sprinkle some meat Louis J. Piantadosi, commander Tuesday. With him was Colonel of tenderizer on one's tail, you can catch one. the 38th Marine Amphibious William C. Doerner, Marine Aide to Unit There's just one hitch - if you can sprinkle some meat tenderizer on here. the secretary. one's tail, he can catch you too' But, not to worry, gentle reader. The iguana has only one tooth - a hooked affair, I understand, that he has no difficulty with getting into you. However, he can not "unbite" you without your help. With a set up like that, the iguana only needs one tooth. Should you find yourself in these unfortunate circumstances, do not panic. The iguana is not poisonous. No need to waste perfectly good meat tenderizer. What you must do is carefully pick up this reptile and turn him in such a manner that the tooth is dislodged. This method is excellent for those steady of nerve. However, if you're anything like yours truly, by this time, iguana, you, and any adjacent terrain will have turned several times. Anyway, I did manage to spot a few iguanas - out people-watching. Having satisfied my curiosity concerning iguanas, I directed by efforts towards the banana rat. I regret to inform that I did not find any banana rats. I didn't find any banana trees, either. Nor could I find one soul on base who had ever seen a banana rat or tree. One fellow volunteered that when they built the fence, they moved all the banana trees on the other side and left all the rats on this side. I have not, however, been able to substantiate this claim. After a fruitless afternoon in searching, I concluded that the banana rat is as elusive as the legendary sea bat. I'm only kidding, of course, but if you really want to get the real story on wildlife here, keep an eye out for a booklet written by Special Services, called "Wildlife on Gitmo." A new edition is expected to be printed in the near future. for the beach.
