PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. PRLog - Global Press Release Distribution Stax Reissues 'Boy Meets Girl: Classic Soul' Duets Duets include Eddie Floyd & Mavis Staples, William Bell & Carla Thomas, Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett, and a rare one from Dusty Springfield & Spencer Davis July 20, 2009 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Stax Records through Concord Music Group will reissue its 1969 compilation Boy Meets Girl, which paired Stax male and female artists for a set of classic duets. Featured are many of the greatest names in soul music including Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, Pervis Staples, Carla Thomas, William Bell, Mavis Staples and Cleotha Staples. The reissue adds two rare duets of Bell and Booker T. Jones’ ”Private Number,” by Bell and Judy Clay, and by Dusty Springfield and Spencer Davis. The latter version was previously available only on a long out-of-print mid-‘80s Takoma Records release. The album is slated for a street date of August 18, 2009. “Duets have always been an integral part of the history of soul music,” writes Stax historian Rob Bowman in his liner notes, “Boy Meets Girl provides a vehicle for several interesting examples of the medium cut for the mighty Stax Records.” Most of Boy Meets Girl was recorded in 1969 at the suggestion of Stax president Al Bell, who felt Stax should progress from a singles label to an album-oriented label. A variety of producers oversaw the various tracks including Bell himself, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones, Don Davis, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Randy Jackson, Homer Banks and Don Nix. The 18-track set begins with the Bell-Clay “Private Number”; next, Bell and Mavis Staples reprise the Sam & Dave hit “I Thank You”; Eddie Floyd and Mavis Staples tackle Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart”; Johnnie Taylor and Carla Thomas perform “Just Keep On Loving Me”; and Eddie Floyd and Mavis Staples perform Floyd and Booker T. -

Being a left-hander, when King finally bought his first real guitar, for $1.25, he taught himself to play it upside down. This, along with some alternate tunings, caused him to pull stings in unexpected directions, imbuing his style with a piercing, wailing signature. Early in his career, King was nicknamed "the Velvet Bulldozer," partly because his smooth and melodic vocal style served as a counterpoint to that more aggressive instrumental attack. King’s legacy is full of contradictions and struggles, and recordings that fell considerably short of his prodigious talent. Depending upon whom you believe, he was born Albert Nelson in either Indianola or Aberdeen, Mississippi, in 1923 or 1924 and reached a standing height somewhere between 6’4’’ and 6’ 7". But let there be no mistake about the man’s musical stature; it would be difficult to understate King’s influence on electric guitarists and singers. Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn both cited Born Under a Bad Sign as a watershed album that modernized the blues and widened the genre’s influence. Eric Clapton has said that hearing the album prompted him to quit the supergroup Cream and attempt to push past his own musical boundaries.
